PRESENTING THE 1961 GLEANER TABLE of CONTENTS FALL WINTER SPRING IN MEMORIAM Roy T. Normington We seniors take pride in having had Mr. Normington as our superint- endent. We remember him as an ardent supporter, not only of our athletic teams, but also of all school activities. We remember Mr. Normington as a man of natural dignity and poise who always had time for a friendly word. We, like many who have been graduated before us, will often re- call and acknowledge the wisdom of his words, -- You make the record, we keep it. The faculty also remembers Mr. Normington. They recall his con- stant help and faithful backing. They recollect Mr. Normington's enjoy- ment of home and family life that stimulated a sincere personal interest in each faculty member. They will never forget Mr. Normington's avid interest in books which made him a well-informed and interesting con- versationalist. The community remembers Mr. Normington's interest and success in expanding our school system, for they were well aware of his partici- pation in activities which led to the betterment of Reedsburg and surroun- ding areas. Mr. Normington's death was deeply felt by all, but mostly by those who were aware of his tireless activity to improve our school system as well as our community. 7 Foreword With a grateful glance backward and a steady gaze forward, we the Senior Class, pre- sent the 1960 Gleaner. Many of you, when you see our photographs, will be astonished at how we have grown. Should you compare our present pictures with those of four years ago, you would notice how our physical appearance has changed. Beaming, hoydenish faces of four years ago now hint of true womanly charm. Freshmen striplings with boyish faces now sport more manly frames and masculine features. Who among you, readers, would say that our growth has ended here, with these out- ward characteristics? Look closely, and observe'that there has been much more to our development than mere external changes. Look at our course of study and our teachers; both have fanned the spark of knowledge into flame. Look at our achievements, stepping- stones to future success. Look at us ourselves-our hopes, our joys, our ways-our every- day life. Then let this book speak for us, to show you all how we have grown, grown in mind even more than in body. Thanks to our growth in these four years our feet are set firmly on the ground. It is our hope that we may keep them there and continue to develop responsible citizens who will make substantial contributions to the welfare of our fellow men. Ever Mindful of Our Welfare LAWRENCE OLSON B.A., MA.; Luther College, University of Iowa Dear Seniors, On July 10, 1960, we lost a true friend in the death of Mr. Normington. As has been written and said many times, he was a man dearly loved by his family and friends, and respected and admired as an educator. On numerous occa- sions 1 have been with educators and lay people who have turned to him with full confidence for his leadership. Looking back through the Gleaners, we find that he made statements of good advice to seniors as Without educa- tion our nation would decline and the individual would fail of his destiny ; Carry on the creative thinking and coura- geous action ; You have been very fortunate to have the opportunity for education ; It is the individual that counts, and the individual is the master of his own destiny. I hope that you will want to maintain the high principles and standards of achievement in which ke believed. After your graduation I hope that you will continue to take an active interest in Webb High School and that you will come and visit us often. My sincere best wishes to each member of the class, I ROW ONE: Mrs. R. Wirth, Dr. A. C. Erickson, Bernice Moyes, Secretary. ROW TWO: Superintendent L. C. Olson, Mr. R. Holzmiller, Mr. H. The Finishing Touch to Our Mental and Physical Growth There is a certain embryonic desire in almost every human being to attain a special type of perfection - a perfection that satisfies his soul as nothing else can. Art, music, and athletics give us the opportunity to satisfy this special desire. In the days when such organizations were few and far between, it was difficult to obtain any instruction in the fine arts, or to have a well-balanced program to keep our bodies in tip-top shape. Thanks to the people who are willing to devote their time to furthering these causes, our curricu- lum contains more instruction in the fine arts and physical education each year. From swallow tails to sweat-suits, we are constantly striving to grow just a little bit better. CAROL CHAPELL-Physical Ed. B.S. That is what our world would be without language. If no one could speak or write, our homes would be caves in the hills, our pencils would be burly clubs, and our only way of expressing ourselves to others would be to clout them over the head. Add language to our lives and we name a keen insight into the history, character, thought, and accomplishments of our fellow-man, a sure way to express ourselves in all studies throughout our lives. And our language courses, too, are in keeping with our cosmopolitan age. Besides basic English courses, we have Latin, Spanish, and Speech, plus a fourth year of Eng- lish. Senior Class Officers Pat Miles...........................Vice-President Jeanne Drea....................Secretary-Treasurer Dick Geyman..............................President In Appreciation As freshmen, we first met our class advisor, Mr. Haf- ner. In English I we soon learned to know Mr. Hafner as an apt teacher and as a person who was interested in us as in- dividuals. We remember his help on our Homecoming floats, our Loyalty decorations, and on our Junior Prom. We, the students of the Senior class, are grateful to Mr. Hafner for the inspiration and guidance he has given us; and we wish him much success always. With OUT advisor SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In September, 1957, our class first passed through the doors of Webb High School. Ours was the first class to spend its entire four years in the completed building, and we believe that we had a hand in giving our Alma Mater the excellent reputation it enjoys. Perhaps initiation was the most outstanding event of our freshman year, but in reality every day was vital to us. We were becoming accustomed to the way of life that would take us from the closing doors of childhood, along the teenage road toward maturity, gradua- tion, and vocation. For our class officials we chose Dave Davis, president; Pat Miles, vice-president; and Sharon Piske, secretary-treasurer. In our sophomore year a surge of school spirit culminated in our winning first prize for our homecoming float. Our class officers were Pat Miles, president; Dave Davis, vice-president; and Janet Mortimer, secretary-treasurer. As juniors we assumed the responsibilities of upperclassmen, and took leading roles in many activities. To Badger Girls' and Boys' State we elected Pat Miles, Charlie Phillips and Jerry Tietje. This was the year of coveted class rings and of the gala event of our lives, the Junior Prom. Queen Beverly Templin and King Tom Grover reigned beneath a rising sun in the setting of Sayonara. Our class president was Charlie Phillips; vice- president, Tony Held; and secretary-treasurer, Janet Mortimer. As seniors, most of us have come a long way from being flippant freshmen. We still enjoy good times and live it up on occasion; but we are now ready to cope with whatever lies ahead. Wherever we go from here we always will retain memories of our closely- knit class. We will always remember the faculty and administration, and we sincerely thank them for their help and guidance. Life will take from us our high-school days, but all the precious memories pertaining to them......these nothing can take from us. Our senior class officers are Dick Geyman, president; Pat Miles, vice-president, and Jeanne Drea, secretary-treasurer. We feel that we owe special gratitude to our loyal representatives from 57 to 61. They were as freshmen; Bev Templin, Tom Quinlan, and Bob Harper; as sophomores. Bev Templin, Marilyn Zietlow, and Charlie Phillips; as juniors: Bev.Templin, Marilyn Zietlow and Bob Bates; as seniors; Bev Templin, Marilyn Zietlow, and Jerry Tietje. fOULL VOHDER VHERETJfc flUKfcv.s i UFUiF BRUSH THBRttETV- II. -6-.
