We, the Seniors of the Class of '58 are indeed grateful for the wonderful new school which we have been privileged to attend... Without the interest and generosity of Mr. Webb, and the further interest, generosity, and cooperation of our parents, this school might never have been possible. The first section, started in October 1953 with the money donated by Herbert H. Webb, was completed in time for us to have some of our classes there when we were freshmen. Further donations by Mr. Webb, coupled with willingness on the part of our parents to assume the rest of the financial obligation, permitted construction to continue so that we will graduate from the completed high school. To show in some small way our appreciation for this new and wonderful school we, the Seniors, dedicate this, our 1958 Gleaner, to both Herbert H. Webb and our parents. Columbia University Dear Seniors: With the advent of the Sputnik, we have entered into a new phase in the development of society. In this new age before us, man is no longer harnessing nature but is actually changing nature to serve his need. The period of the Industrial Revolution was primarily an adaptive age, the period ahead is truly a creative age. In Henry VI, Shakespeare points out that everyone's future is in reality an urn full of un- known treasures from which all may draw unguessed prizes. Likewise, he suggests that there will always be men and women ready to take their turn to play great parts on the stage of history. You have been very fortunate to have the opportunity for education. If you have made good use of it, you are ready to play your part in the tremendous age that lies ahead. Good luck to all of you. n B oand oft Education t D n t h e • i n m e e t i n 9 n e IV n o o m J. Seering, W. Gant. C. Phillips, K. Gehrke, A. Erickson, I. Lassallette. r. Wirth. R. Through our four years in high school, Mr. Edward Thompson has been our class advisor, encouraging us in all our endeavors. We would like to take this oppor- tunity, Mr. Thompson, to say, thank you for all your help. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Gretchen Merkel. Vice-President; John Krueger President; Goldie DeBeir. Secretary-Treasurer. Hilt on y On September 10, 1957, the Senior Class of '58' entered school for the last term. This was the first year that all the students attended Webb School. At first we missed our walks between school, but before long we were involved with the busy life of Seniors. But wait, first lets go back to September 7, 1954. This was the day that we entered school as a class. Our first job as Freshmen was to elect the following officers: Goldie DeBeir, president; Rudy Brandt, vice-president; Cindy Ritzer, secretary; and Roger Kasiska, Phyllis Lathrope and Gretchen Merkel as Loyalty Representatives. As Freshmen, little did we dream that we would be the first class to graduate from the new Webb School. When the next fall rolled around, the new iophs came back to school bursting with energy, ready to do well in everything. We showed our fine spirit by winning first place in citizenship for Loyalty and joining many clubs and activities. Our officers were Jerry Schroeder, president; Keith Stickler, vice-president; Goldie DeBeir, secretary. The Loyalty Representatives were Roger Kasiska, Gretchen Merkel, Gordon Gehrke, Phyllis Lathrope, Betty Donovan and Sherry Hellpap. As Juniors we had much to look forward to. In October we ordered our class rings which arrived in time for Christmas. February 15 found us dancing at our prom, Holiday In The Snow . Queen Betty Donovan and King John Krueger reigned in full glory. We worked hard on our Prom and were proud to be able to call it a success. Later in the year Nancy Schulze was chosen to attend Badger Girls State while John Krueger and Dick Bill attended Boys State. Our president was Gretchen Merkel, vice-president was Audrey Schneider, secretary was Stan Meyer, treasurer was Joe Sauer. Roger Kasiska, Gordon Gehrke, Judy Holzinger and Phyllis Lathrope were elected to the Loyalty Council. As Juniors we all dreaded the day school ended, knowing that next year the curtain would be drawn over the Class of '58' just as it had been on many classes before us. But we eagerly came back this year to our new school. We elected John Krueger, president; Gretchen Merkel, vice-president; Goldie DeBeir, secretary; and Roger Kasiska, Gordon Gehrke, Judy Holzinger and Phyllis Lathrope as Loyalty Representatives. One of the Loyalty Representatives, Roger Kasiska has made an unusual record by be- ing a regular member of the Loyalty Council for four years and serving as president for the last two years. We will have many things to remember, among them our Senior Class Play and the ex- citement of graduation. We are proud to be able to say that we, the class of‘581, are the first class to graduate from Webb High School. We owe much to our class advisor, Mr. Edward Thompson, who has been a help to us for the last four years. Without a doubt he will long be appreciated by everyone of us. 1. Ready for a game, Don? 2. We got off to a good start in Loyalty by winning the float and yell points for Home- coming. Soon after school began, we ordered our class rings and then began to prepare for our Prom, which was held on April 18th. Our class was well represented in athletics and other school organizations. The sophomores have no one big event to look forward to, such as initiation sponsoring a prom, or having senior pictures taken, but this year found us involved in many activities around the school. We thoroughly enjoyed the excitement of Homecoming, the games, the dances and school activities. In our search for fun we never neglected our classes, for we rated high in scholarship. ROW ONE: K. Coach Mr. Reinecke. Wrestling was introduced to the students and public this year as a major sport at Webb High. More than forty candidates took an interest in wrestling, which was under the direction of Mr. Reinecke. There were eleven matches with other schools, two tournaments, an invitational, and a sectional meet. For the first year of wrestling, the boys who took part did a fine job. All of us look forward to seeing wrestling again next year. The Lettermen's Club of Webb High School consisted of all major letter winners of high school athletics. The club was advised by Coach Nick Holmes. The club did not have regular meetings, but their special meetings proved to be very useful. Each year the letter winners have had a banquet topped by a special speaker. Besides the banquet, the Letter- men's Club sponsors a dance annually. With the profits, they try to buy useful luxuries for advancement in our athletics. Last year they bought a movie camera to take pictures of our football team in play. This year the club is buying a telescopic lens for the camera. JLettenmen' Club ROW ONE: R. Krohn, D. Mulock, J. Williams, D. Grosk- laus, D. Bill, B. Schorcr. ROW TWO: Coach Holmes, G. Douglas, J. Mr. Reinicke 3ootl all The Reedsburg Beavers, hoping to win the 1957 conference champion- ship, started out well by defeating Monroe 32-6 in their first game of the season, a non-conference tilt. Douglas, Krueger, Williams, and Mulock I- d the scoring. The following Friday Reedsburg played Tomah in their first conference game and won it easily 32-6. Reedsburg displayed a show of great power when they totalled up 345 yards to Tomah's 59. Playing Nekoosa the following week proved fatal to the Beavers os they fell at the hands of the Papermakers 13-12. Nekoosa went on to tie for the conference crown. Richland Center, playing at Webb Field, was defeated by the Beavers 13-0. The on-charging Beavers riddled the Hornets by giving them in- juries to care for. Reedsburg's Homecoming was especially grand. We defeated the Baraboo Thunderbirds, our rivals, 14-7 on good runs by Douglas, and Williams. Baraboo scored on a fake punt. Reedsburg was far from being in the best condition with the flu bug around, but they went on to defeat the Dells team 18-12. Again, Williams and Douglas did the scoring. This win gave our team a tie for first place with Nekoosa and Baraboo. Here's what Coach Holmes has to say about our fine team: I would say that our team this season played near- er to its potential than any other team I have coached. With a nucleus of only seven seniors, the boys worked to the point where I felt that at the end of the season they were one of the very best teams in our area. Good football teams and players are rapidly becom- ing a habit at our high school, mainly because of initiative such as was shown by our '57 team. Coach Holmes FOOTBALL SCORES R.H.S. Clarence Moyes did a fine filling in for injured Douglas, scoring 4 TD's on very fine runs. Clarence, only a sophomore, should be a great help in next year's drive. Holding a 5-1 record, the Beavers went to Portage for the last game of the year. A Reeds- burg victory would have given the Beavers a tie for the crown, but the Portage team slipped by with a 7-0 victory. With our two backs out because of injuries, Reedsburg still gave them a rough time. Our Beavers finished the season in a tie for third place with Baraboo. Everything considered, our boys did a grand job and proved to be a highly respected team in the conference. Many of the players won berths and honorable mentions on the All-Conference team. Our Homecoming pep rally was held on the new Webb field with the band per- forming their halftime show, and the cheerleaders giving each student the extra pep needed. A v The parade, starting on Webb Avenue, was led by the band. Di- rectly after them came the court and King and Queen, all riding in con- vertibles. Next came the floats with each class following them. At night, following the game which was won by our Beavers, the King, Dick Bill, crowned Audrey Schneider Queen of the 1957 Home- coming, at the dance. The following week Coach Holmes' boys won their first home and conference game by a score of 76-60. Reedsburg had little trouble and everyone saw action. „ Reedsburg rolled to their third straight win as they posted a 78-45 win over Adams- Friendship in a non-conference game. The Beavers outscored the opponents 47-16 in the second half for the win. The Beavers edged by the Tomah cagers 61-56 for their fourth straight win of the season. It was a thriller all the way. The following game proved fatal to the Beavers as they fell at the hands of the Richland Center Hornets 69-67. A Hornet basket with five seconds left gave us the defeat, despite Krueger's and Bill's 28 points each. Going into the next game with a 4-1 season's record, the Beavers dumped Nekoosa here 66-56 for their fifth win in six starts. Everyone saw action, but the scoring was led by John Krueger, who scored 33 points. Reedsburg dropped its second game of the year in an overtime contest at Baraboo, Baraboo winning 54-50. The loss dropped the Beavers into a tie for second place. On December 21 st, the Beavers topped Madison Central in a non-conference game 57-45 After a two week vacation the Beavers came back to defeat Madison Edgewood 78-58. On January 10th the Reedsburg team invaded Wisconsin Dells and came home with an- other victory to give us a 4-2 conference record. The following Friday Reedsburg played host to Portage and trounced them 83-66 in an easy victory. At Mauston the following Friday, we had trouble scoring a victory, but we managed to come through with a 70-61 win. The following night La Crosse Logan played here in a non-conference game. The Beavers won a thriller 69-66. Krueger's 39 points led the way to victory. On January 30th the Baraboo Thunderbirds defeated the Beavers 77-76 in a game of wits. With a minute and forty seconds left and Reedsburg in front by 5 points, the Baraboo team quickly took over with the sharp shooting the players displayed. February 12th saw the Beavers trounce the Dells, lea by Dick Bill's 30-plus points. The two final games of the season gave Viroqua a win o Reedsburg and Reedsburg a -win over Richland Center, putting the Beavers in third place in the conference. 91b Coach Holmes The level of success reached this year is, I'm sure, a true measure of the caliber of the boys playing on the varsity team. The gym was beautifully decorated with scenes of various countries. A life size Chinese junk decorated one corner. In the middle of the gym a colorful balloon was suspended to represent a trip around the world. Refreshments were served in a replica of a small French sidewalk cafe. =ec BATES.
