Some of the memories which we will cherish most dearly in future years include those of our school life. The Gleaner staff hopes that just as leaf- ing through a scrapbook brings back incidents long forgotten, so leafing through this annual will bring back many happy moments to remember. For the freshmen it will be the first volume of their high school days; for the seniors it will be the last and precious. er you be stirred to tears or as you reminisce, recalling the events and activities in which you participated, and even more important the classmates, who have scattered near and far, you will realize that these days were some of the happiest of your life. Now for these memories, turn the pages with us. U E EEIUEMBER. DEDICATION Among our Moments to Remember are those we spent in our Social Problems class under the guidance of Mr. Ophoven. He was always ready to lend a friendly ear and give sound advice to anyone who asked for it. The sugges- tions he gave us on how to make the most out of our future will never be forgotten. Besides having a place in our memory as a teacher, he will also have one as a friend to Reedsburg youth outside of school. Many who have not had him in class, have learned to know him from his direction of our recreational affairs. We the class of 1957 dedicate our Gleaner to him to show our appreciation for all he has done for us in high school. ROY T. NORMINGTON, B.Ed., M.A. Dear Seniors: There have been many Moments to Remember during your atten- dance at Webb High - moments of success and, as in life, moments of fail ure. Probably the most pleasing memory of all will come when you receive your diploma signifying that you have successfully completed the requirements for graduation. I sincerely hope that, as the years pass, each of you will have the memory and the satisfaction of knowing that you have made the most of your opportunities and that sincerity, joy in life, intelligence, friendliness, resourcefulness, strength of purpose, gracious manners, beauty of spirit, generosity, dependability, helpfulness, and nobility of conduct, will be the real measure of your success. For man of the students of Reedsburg High, their scrap- book will include memories of bus rides to and from school. They will remember standing in the cold on a winter morning and the relief when the bus finally came; the after school rush to get one of the best seats; and, after a noisy, fun- filled ride, arriving home just in time for supper. We would like to pay tribute to the many bus drivers who transport more than half of the students of our school each day. c 0 M M U T £ 10 FLOYD AUSTIN Em According to Erst you can prove anything by figures. Remember how we entered into the swing of things and showed our spirit by winning first place in the Home- coming yell? As officers we chose Joe Tourdot, president, Pat Cassity Smith, vice-president, Carol Curtin, secretary, and Linda Mielke, Jim Bill, Gordon Thies, and Bud Wilcox as loyalty representatives. As sophomores, we again showed our school spirit—this time by having three of the varsity cheerleaders coming from our class and also the four majorettes. Terry Meyer was elected president, Fred Peper, vice-president, and Phyllis Schyvinck, secretary-treasurer. Ruth Ann Gundrum, Laurie Olson, and Jim Bill were chosen to represent us on the Loyalty Council. Choosing class rings was the first note of excitement in our Junior year. Probably the biggest event was our Prom, Moments to Remember over which Jerry Spohnholz and Donna Churchill reigned as king and queen. Towards the end of the year we chose Ruth Ann Gundrum to attend Badger Girls State, and Jim Bill and John Temte to attend Boys State. To climax the year, we won Loyalty and our president, Jim Bill accepted the trophy for us. The other officers were Jim Geffert, vice- president, Catherine Schreve, secretary-treasurer, and Arleen Speich, Ruth Ann Gundrum, Carol Curtin, Judy Kohlmeyer, Judie Mundth, and Laurie Olson, loyalty representatives. To guide us through our senior and final year at R.H.S., we elected Jim Bill, president, Jerry Spohnholz, vice- president, and Donna Churchill, secretary-treasurer. Leading the Homecoming Dance as king and queen, were Bill Burmester and Sue Baumgarten. Other memories of our Senior year are of the Class Play and the excitement of graduation. We will be the last class to see Freshmen enter the old High School which is picture above. 24 ROW ONE: S. Bauer. H. Collies. S. Francois. J. Courtier. K. Hankins, L. Boyd. M. Farber. C. Buchsteiner. We started the year off right by electing class officers. We had no more than ordered our class rings when Homecoming was upon us. The Juniors managed to take first in skit. Our class rings finally came. Then followed weeks of exciting plans for Prom, which was a huge success forall. The Loyalty Banquet was the last event in this year of memories. See us in the '58 Gleaner for the conclusion of our story. 26 ROW ONE: M. Newbury, B. Knuth, M. Holton, S. Hasz, N. Langholff, M. Miller, P. Lathrope, J. Holzinger, M. Manion, D. Nobs. ROW TWO: T. The two teams fought to a 7-7 deadlock. Darlington went on to take their conference with an undefeated season. Reedsburg met Nekoosa next in their first conference match and was handed a 7-0 defeat. A series of fumbles cost the Beavers the game but the Papermakers were held to their lowest score of the season. Nekoosa went on to gain the conference championship with an undefeated season. The Beavers really caught fire as they rolled over Mauston two weeks later with a 31-8 slaughter. Gale Douglas did a great job filling in for Lyle LeMoine, who was sidelined because of an appendectomy. The Beavers dropped their next game to Tomah 19-13. It was a close, hard fought battle and saw John Krueger and Don Mulock do the scoring for Reedsburg. The Beavers ran wild when they met Portage in their Homecoming tilt. They picked up 10 first downs and 244 yards rushing. Lyle LeMoine and Gale Douglas each scored twice for Reedsburg. We next met Richland Center and cruised to an easy 20-0 victory. The Beavers gained 18 first downs in the win. The next week saw the Beavers take on their traditional rivals, Baraboo. This game featured some of Reedsburg's best running and line play of the season as they walloped the Birds 33-6. The Beavers had little trouble in taking Wisconsin Dells 27-0 to close out the season. Playing their last game were John Schirmang, John Temte, Jim Bill, Bill Harrison, Floyd Austin, Joe and Bob Tourdot, Lyle LeMoine, and Joe Birch. Reedsburg placed four men on the all-conference team. They were Jim Bill and Bill Burmester on the offensive team, and Roger Kasiska on the defensive team. Lyle LeMoine was chosen for both first teams. John Schirmang, Don Mulock, Gale Douglas, John Temte, Floyd Austin, Joe Tourdot, and Bill Schorer received honorable mention. Jim Bill and Bill Burmester made third all-area team and Lyle LeMoine and Gale Douglas received honorable mention. N. SCHEIN y 1 COACH NICK HOLMES D. We won the next game, and had a 59-48 victory over Sparta, in our first conference play. The next week we played host to Adams-Friendship, in a non-conference game and won 69-48. Our trip to Madison Central proved very successful, as we staved off a late Central bid for a 83-75 victory. John Krueger was really hot as he scored 42 points for scoring honors. At our next game Reedsburg trimmed Tomah 53-43 to rack up five straight victories, in a row. As one of the few remaining undefeated teams in Madison area prep basketball, we continued our winning streak by beating Richland Center 63-53. The next night we traveled to Nekoosa to take on the Papermakers. With Reedsburg rated as underdogs, they were out to prove different and toppled over Nekoosa 73-65. Playing at Reedsburg, we won the big one by defeating our rivals, Baraboo by a score of 59-44. Jim Bill led the way with 25 points. The Beavers remained hot and Coach Holmes Boys defeated the Dells 78-64. John Temte scored 17 points for the Beavers. Next we traveled to Madison to meet Edgewood, and won 79-68 to remain undefeated. At Portage we rang up our 11th victory by a score of 82-66. Although Temte was not high scorer, he was tops on, defense, to help slow Portage down. The next night, at LaCroose Logan, we were handed our first defeat of the season, by a score of 74-63. Although it was non-conference it was a tough one to lose. Our big disappointment came when we lost our first conference game by two points 71-69 to Mauston. Although we were behind in the last few seconds, the team never gave up. At Baraboo, the Beavers downed the Thunderbirds for the 2nd time in the season 65-59. Floyd Austin and John Krueger shared scoring honors. Portages trip to Reedsburg proved unsuccessful for the Warriors, as we out-scored them for the second time this season by the large margin of 73-54. Jim Bill led in the scoring column with 24 points. At the Dells, with 10 boys hitting scoring totals, we won handily over the Dells with the absence of Don O'Neil 85-55. Floyd Austin led the Beavers in scoring with 22 points. The next week we played the Viroqua Blackhawks, and lost a heart-breaker 62-60 with Monson putting in the winning basket with only five seconds left. With the absence of Floyd Austin with chicken-pox, Dick Bill took his place and did an excellent job. Terry Meyer also was tops in getting re-bounds, but it seems like the Blackhawks had more height. At Richland Center we became soul owner of 1st place in the South Central conference with a 73-57 victory. This was our first bounceball title since the loop was organized 5 years ago. We had a very successful season and credit is due to Coach Holmes, also to our basketball manager Dick Quinlin who helped the boys, and gave them added enthusiasm to help them on to victory, and to all the players who helped to make it truly a successful season, a season with 15 wins and only 3 loses to become Champs of the South Central Basketball Conference. What does Coach have to say about the team: Success in our past season has been achieved because of many varied factors. But foremost, with out question, is the really fine attitude of the boys, and their unassuring desire to win! I am sure that their performance, will for many years to come, remain a inspiration for the boys who follow on Reedsburg athletic teams. I add my congratulations to a great basketball team and a fine group of gentlemen. ROW ONE: N. Pape, C. Moyes, D. Temte. J.Brickl, R. Krohn. D. Buchsteiner, G. Peipenberg. ROW TWO: Mr. Reinicke, A. The cast made up of sopho- mores, juniors and seniors showed their talents in Father of the Bride. Before the play everyone was either memorizing lines or scraping, building and painting sets. The success of this first play makes us hope that our high school will continue to have them. BPAVPR, PLAVBR S Well do we remember our walks up to the second floor and into Mr. Cramer's for Dramatics Club. This year we took a new name, calling ourselves the Beaver Players. Chub Bill and Susie Holzinger, as crown bearers added a charming note to the crowning. We II remember our decorations. The couples entered through a wintry lane of snow covered pine trees, and the miracle of winter scenes, snowmen and skaters were silhouetted against the walls. We wished on a star, and Betty and John were crowned sitting on a silvery moon. As we danced and danced through our Holiday in the Snow the orchestra sat in a huge snowbank. 66 HUMOROUS FIRST ROW: S.
