• ' .., Foreword We, the graduating class of '56. have chosen as the theme of our Gleaner, “School Spirit. We feel that this year it has been shown through our athletics, band, school activities and the response of the student body. We as seniors will soon be leaving K.H.S. and will be using this Spirit as we go ahead into adult life in our jobs, in our commu- nity, and in service to our country. rV f We Dedicate Coach Holmes DEDICATION Just as he has dedicated his time and effort to R.H.S. we, the class of '56 dedicate our Gleaner to Coach Holmes. This year our high school has made history by having its first undefeated championship football team. Much of the credit for this outstanding team is due to the excellent coaching of Nick Holmes. Not only do his football teams shine, but his basket- ball and baseball teams as well. In addition to offering “his boys” instruction, he offers his friendship and guidance to everyone. Both in and out of school Coach sets an example for us all to follow by always practicing good citizenship and sportsmanship. 2 Superintendent Roy T. Normington B.Ed.; Lawrence College, Columbia University, Stevens Point College Dear Seniors— For twelve years you have been laying the educational foundation for your lives. Day after day the tools of learning and thinking have been placed in your hands. As this phase of your formal education draws to an end 1 want to remind you that education is more than school work, and I hope that you will have acquired the following purposes: First—a limitless curiosity to know. Second—an impulse to make your lives count. Third—a technique for finding out what you want to know. Now, as you go forward to ever new and widening horizons I want you to know that your school, your parents, and your friends have great expectations of your future success and wish you the best of everything in anything you may undertake. Sincerely, 4 R. T. Normington Assistant Superintendent Laurence Olson B.A., M.A. Luther College. University of Iowa Board Of Education C. Phillips, R. Wirth, I. Lassallette. A. Erickson, R. Senior Class History On September 7, 1953, we entered the halls of R.H.S. as lowly Frosh. The Seniors were surprised at our quick recovery after our initiation dance, as we easily walked away with Homecoming. We chose Dawn Lingard Cassity, class president, Don Mayfield Jr., vice-president; Delores Grosklaus, secretary-treasurer; and Dick Schroeder, Ronald Owen, and Helen Hamburg our Loyalty representatives, to lead us. Our size was both a help and hindrance to us as we ran away with magazine sales, only to end up fourth in Loyalty. As industrious Sophomores, we became real competitors for the Loyalty trophy. We chose Don Mayfield, president; Larry Droes, vice-president; Betty Cassity, secretary-treasurer; and Carol Vogel, Karen Erickson, and Teresa Horkan Loyalty representatives. Once again we succeeded in taking the two points for magazine sales, and proved we were better able to compete for Loyalty, for now we moved into third place. As Juniors, our race for the Loyalty Trophy began immediately when we took top honors for our skit and cheering at Homecoming. The officers for our Junior year were Larry Droes, president; Gerald Blakeslee, vice- president; Monica Scoon, secretary-treasure; Alberta Gall, Elaine Schulenberg, and Angie Gerber Loyalty repre- sentatives. The choosing of our class rings and Prom theme caused a bubble of excitement within the halls of R.H.S. We selected Gerald Blakeslee our Prom king, who with Virginia Mielke, his queen, reigned on his South Sea Isle in the South Pacific. Admidst all this activity we managed to advance to second place in Loyalty. On graduation day we will fondly recall all the memories we shared. There was rarely a moment without some surprising, exciting occurence. As Seniors we elected the following officers: Louis Pingel, president; Fred Harmeyer, vice-president; Pat Mundth, secretary-treasurer; Alberta Gall, Ronald Thies, and Regnald Werth as Loyalty representatives. They have done an excellent job in paving the way to the moment when the familiar strains of the Alma Mater are heard, and the class of 56” in caps and gowns, look forward to the future. In all our activities we found Mr. Lynett, our faculty advisor, most helpful and inspiring. We owe him a great deal and want to express our sincere appreciation for his efforts in our behalf. If we look back to their freshman year we find great potential athletic and musi- cal stardom embodied in this class. We find many Sophomores taking part in extra-curricular activities to show their class spirit, earn loyalty points, and have fun with the rest of their classmates. With Mr. Mayfield as their faculty adviser, their confusion soon gave way to an ambitious, cooperative spirit. The Freshmen showed their coopera- tion during their initiation which was cli- maxed by the Freshman Bawl. Homecom- ing gave them a further opportunity to show their school spirit, and they won first place both for their skit and for their yell. The only sad memory of the year was occasioned by the death of our classmate, Keith Strichert, a polio victim. He is missed both by his teachers and class- mates. D. Brimmer, R. Buchsteiner, H. The Reedsburg High School choir in their purple robes and white stoles gave several spirited and impressive performances under the able direction of Miss Holmes. Along with an echo choir, the group played an important part in the Christmas Program. Other events in which the choir participated were the Spring Concert, the Music Tour- nament at Mauston, Baccalau- reate Services, and for the first time, this year they also took part in a Midwinter Concert. The voices of the group show how much they enjoy singing. Band MR. HUGHES Director We will long remember the band and all the things it has done this year. I nder the able direction of Mr. Hughes, and his assistant conductor, Jim Ceffert, the hand has really built up a reputation for itself. The four majorettes. Sue Baumgarten, Judy Kohlmeyer, Joan Korth and l aurie Olson, and the drum major, Phil Utterhack, added the finish- ing touch to our marching hand. R.H.S. had good reason to be proud of the hand when it put on the entertainment between the halves of our football games. Besides appearing in its annual Spring Concert, and taking part in the tournament at Mauston, the band put on a W inter Concert this year. It completed a very successful season by providing the music for Com- mencement. FIRST ROW: S. Baumgarten, G. Merkel, J. Korth, L. Olson, J. Kohlmeyer, J. Simpson, M. Crall, S. Camp, H. Krueger, K. They are divided into a Junior League, made up of boys from grades 7, 8, and 9, and a Senior League of upper classmen. There are eight teams—four Junior and four Senior. Mr. Schein and Mr. Reed coach both leagues. The championship of the Junior league was won by the ‘'Gophers,' and the Senior league cham- pionship by the “Skyrockets.” 49 r '1 j 4 ' If ' - .. HEAD COACH Nick” Holmes Football - 1955 Darlington RHS 31 OPP 0 Viroqua 51 0 Sparta 39 6 Nekoosa 41 0 Wisconsin Dells 35 6 Baraboo 6 0 Richland Center 7 6 Portage 18 7 With the return of eleven letternien forming the nucleus for a team of thirty-five boys we began our 1955 football season. The Beavers opened the season with a non-conference victory over a determined Darlington team 31-0. Bill Burmester accounted for three of our touchdowns, passing for two, and scoring the other himself. Reedsburg met Viroqua in their first conference game and proved to be too much for the Blackhawks as we won by a 51-0 score. Larry Droes led the Beavers by scoring four touch- downs and gaining almost 200 yards. We traveled to Sparta for our next game and defeated them 39-6. Lyle LeMoine played a fine defensive game. Five players scored touchdowns, and the Beavers were scored upon for the first time. Our next game was with the highly rated Nekoosa eleven and Reedsburg handed them their first defeat 41-0. The de- fensive team played an alert game as they recovered many fumbles and held the Papermakers scoreless. The Beavers moved into undisputed first place by defeating Wisconsin Dells 35-6. By winning, the Beavers regained the Heltand Memorial Trophy. Bill Burmester completed three passes for touchdowns, one to Krohn who lateraled to Droes for a 75 yard touchdown. The sixth game of the season found Reedsburg playing their arch-rival, Baraboo. This was our homecoming game and was mostly a defensive game, as it was a scoreless battle until Mick Krohn intercepted a Baraboo pass and scored the onb touchdown of the game; and the Beavers won 6-0. Playing on a muddy field and in the rain .we clinched the undisputed championship by defeating Richland Center 7-6. Jim Bill made a spectacular catch to score the only touchdown for the Beavers. The Beavers completed the undefeated season by defeating Portage 18-7. Playing their last game were Mayfield. Krohn. Droes, Ederer, Wilcox. Mylrea and Harmeyer. Three Reedsburg Beavers won four positions on the all- conference team. Mick Krohn was named to both the offensive and defensive team, while Larry Droes was selected on the offensive team, and Lyle LeMoine on the defensive team. Harmeyer, Mylrea, Wilcox, and Mayfield received honorable mention. ASSISTANT COACH Norman Schein 51 ■i lii O . J. Schinnang R. Mylrea ■ i ' • • — Im m , ) i w i • lv nwtm Jv 4 J. Sauer r. r. All in all, we had a good season. We won our non-conference game with Mauston 62-56, Adams-Friendship 55-46, and Madison Central 74-17 before entering conference play. Vie started conference play well as we heat Tomah 86-64 in the opening game. We won from Richland Center 67-54 and on the next night came right on to win from Nekoosa 72-59. Our big disappointment was at Baraboo. where we were defeated 78-54, snapping our six game winning streak. The next week we again lost, this time to l.aCrosse Central 68-55. After Christmas vacation we won from Edgewood 67-14, only to lose to Portage 67-60 after our boys put up a good battle. We got back on the winning side by defeating Sparta 78-60 and Mauston 69-67. The Beavers won the Mauston game when Mick krohn tipped in a basket in the last seconds. We lost our next three games: Wis. Dells, Baraboo and Portage, although the boys played good basketball. John Krueger had many long shots in the Wisconsin Dells game, but they were to no avail. In our next games we avenged earlier defeats to Wisconsin Dells and LaCrosse Central as we trounced them 80-67 and 76-72. respectively. John Tcmte and Harry Haefer stole the ball many times in both games to help us win. Unfortunately, our team lost their last two games of the season to iroqua and Richland Center. However, the season was enjoyed by everyone. Louis Pingel. Jim Smith. Floyd Austin. Bill Burmester and Terry Meyer helped the Beavers by plaving good ball as substitutes. Not to be forgotten were the efforts of our manager Larry Droes. He helped the boys and gave them added enthusiasm, which enabled them to win many games. The Regional Tournament was held on our home court this year. Our first game was against Adams-Friendship whom we beat 90 to 75, to advance in the tournament. We lost the next night to Wisconsin Dells 75 to 75. although the boys fought hard all the way. Basketball Varsity FIRST ROW: J. Temte, L. Haefer, T. Meyer, M. krohn. I). Rill.
