Because the Grad- Night experience is one which no one could describe. Hurrying to get to the buses on time, waiting an hour for the buses to leave, surviving the high-spirited ride down, arriving at Disneyland, and sleeping through the somewhat quieter ride back home-the entire adventure was one that had to be experienced Ersthand. Because of sudden rain again this year, the ceremonies were forced inside. There were very few seniors with dry eyes as tearful goodbyes were said and promises to keep in touch were made. Though the 300 plus members of the class of 1977 will go in many directions down the path of life, they will all share the common memory of friendships, good times, and hard work that they experienced at Reedley High School. 8 SUPPLEMENT Mitchell Masaru Abe Perry Jay Abe Richard Townsend Abraham Florlnda Alanis Guadalupe Alvarado Bobby Wayne Anderson Lewis Wayne Anderson Rosalind Keiko Arakawa Dave Patrick Araki Ernest Edward Archer Karen Ruth Armitstead Mario Carlos Asuncion Maria Lucia Atesalp Mary Lou Avendano Danny Dean Awbrey Steven Badilla Kirk Edward Bailey Pamela Ruth Baker Margaret M. From here, the many challenges of life begin, but many memories will also remain. The Seniors sponsored an after game dance featuring STAR. Chocolate-covered frozen bananas have become a'Senior tradition at Fiesta time, and spirited Seniors cheered as they rode down Main Street on the Senior float. The Senior Class was very vocal at all rallies. Seniors looked forward to that special Prom night, graduation, and of course, Disneyland. Their last week of school was a busy one. Final tests had to be passed, preparations made for graduation, and the many good-byes and farewells taken. All in all, those four years will be remembered as the memorable care-free years for the Class of 1977. 14 Seniors 1, ' 1,-. 5 , t .,qE,Z'?S 611 exxg ',k g 1 I ,v ,41- -' - mm: Ae WI ,gn I 4- gi. 37: li Q , if 1: 1 5 hi l xg 5- X2 9 7+ E Q gif ii 5 5 54 i -,-f- I3 ff? .-Q -new v .Al 'fig A I ,fx 31 lv 4 1' .EL 9535 xi ek- 14-'ff E JV' AC' 5 FUHEIGIV BYCHAIVGE On the tennis courts or at the chess board, in the music room or the swimming pool, Jari Kokkonen accomplished at least one thing in all these places this year: he made friends. An exchange student from Helsinki, Finland, Jari came to Reedley with the Youth for Understanding program and is staying with the Arnold Ewy family. He enjoys the sports and games mentioned above, and plays string bass and electric bass guitar. He is also interested in architecture. Jari noted the difference between the excitement of the large city where he lives and the friendliness of a smaller town such as Reedley. These students have achieved excellence in areas they represent. Many are active in student government, sports, music, mathematics, clubs, and activities. Those active in student government included Patty, Ann, Becky, Connie, Kelly, and Bennett. Tom, Mike, and Mark were on the winning Pirate football team, and Mike played Varsity baseball. Patty, Becky, and Kelly have all participated in volleyball, and Tom, and Bennett were on the track team. Bennett and Ann were swimmers, Patty and Kelly were Varsity tennis players, and Tom and Mike were on basketball squads. Jeff was on the math team, and Ann and Mark received national recognition in their respective sports. Patty, Becky, and Bennett all sang in Madrigals, and Kelly and Ann also were members of other choirs. Connie and Mike were Girl and Boy Staters, Connie was a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student, while Jeff was a semi-hnalist in that competition. Mike won the DAR Good Citizen Award, and Connie was a Bank of America Plaque winner, and Porcupine editor. These students have achieved many things in their four years at RHS and the Porcupine is happy to give them this richly deserved recognition. 32 SENIORS ,, 1 f-5 ief K Ik, ,.,, f fr 11. . f M51 ff? 1 -125 Nm- '-? ACTIVITIES 65 Homecomlhg Week The lirst week of November was an exciting time on the Pirate campus as everyone got involved in the spirit of Homecoming. Various clubs and classes sponsored activities each day of the week. Several people were walking around the campus on Monday wearing shirts that were colorful, humorous, or in some cases just plain strange. FBLA sponsored l'Shirt Day competition at lunch. Winners were Lynn Tallman, Mark Alvis and Tim Harmon. Merry.Moore made the most money for the senior class fund on Tuesday when Tom Leach auctioned the student council members. Joey Boyd and Michelle Pegorsch were the Movie Star winners on Wednesday, Movie Star Day, sponsored by Thespians. Student Council slaves were paraded by their owners that day. The Booster Clubs sponsored Superstar competition. Couples from various clubs tossed eggs, jumped rope, had a gunny sack race and played marshmallow mouth. Patty Brooks and Mark Stanley, entries from Block R, won the event. On traditional Green and White Day, Friday, a rally was held in the stadium at lunch. Drama Club put on a skit, and the Juniors won the sign competition. The car rally Friday night was won by Entre Nous with their Peanuts float. King and Queen were crowned at half-time and the game against Hanford ended in a tie. TOP RIGHT: Debbie Mason has to chain 'em to keep 'em BOTTOM RIGHT: You've got to be kidding!! The band rehearsed each Thursday evening and performed at the home football games. They also traveled to Berkeley in October and competed in show and parade competition at Selma, where once again they pleased the crowds with their much imitated dancing style. A select group of high spirited Pirate musicians formed the Pep Band which performed at rallies and away games under the direction of Mr. Book and drum majors Doug Skogsberg and Christine Reimer. Marching director Mr. Fritz took over the orchestra, and Mr. Walter and Mr. Book auditioned each member of marching band to determine which concert-season band the students would be in. Top wind players and percussionists joined the string players to form a fine orchestra which traveled to festivals in the spring. More experienced musicians were placed in the Symphonic Band with Mr. Walter. Symphonic Band has the reputation as one of the finest groups in the valley. Learning would not have been possible without certain people - the teachers and auxiliary staff members. Custodians kept the school running, administrators and their staff ran the business side of the school, bus drivers got the students to school, and teachers guided their pupils through the hallowed halls of learning. A welcome greeting was extended to Librarian Mrs. Flora, just returned from Sabbatical, and to new teachers James Blied, William Braun, Paul Foster, James Gregory, Michael Newkirk, Tony Rotella, and Jim Book. Good-byes were said to Mrs. Renoud, Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Park, who retired after many years of faithful service. ACADEMICS 161 HHS Admlhlktratian ABOVE: PRINCIPAL, Dr. c. Saunders. ABOVE RIGHT: AssT.
