It Q A 1 K ls' 'll ,gg THE ATHLETIC SEASON OF 1942-45 The basketball season was a very interesting one in both the Northeastern and Little Five Conferences. The Northeastern early developed into a four team race featuring Marseilles, the eventual winner, Morris, Gardner, and Braidwood. The standings were as follows, Qfirg Hg-ri Lost 1. Marseilles ll 2 2. Mazen O 13 The Little Five Conference was a tight race between Gardner and Braidwood, and the final standing saw both tie for the champ- ionship with eight wins and two losses. Mazen O 10 The Reed Custer boys started out all night in the Northeastern Tournament at Morris by knocking off Gardner, one of the favorites, but succumbed to Morris, the winner of the tournament, in the semi- finals. The WBN team played only a few games because of the transportation difficulties, and no conferences standings were kept. The summary of those played showed 4 wins and 5 losses. Cheerleaders were Theresa Zandi--varsityg Jane Frasca --Juniorg Dolores Dermott--Sophomore. The Baseball competition in both conferences was suspended because of the transportation problem. A few games were played with nearby schools. Lack of players, however, made it difficult to put a winning combination on the field. The Freshmen enjoyed their first party in R-C Gym, Hurray! No schoolg High School Conference in Champaign All school play practice began. American Legion held Armistice Day Program in R-C Gym. Memorial for men in armed forces was dedicated. The name was submitted by Barbara Nugent who acted as Queen and John Cochrane represented nUncle 5amN. Will County Nurse visited R-C. Basketball Season startsg lst game was played with Mi- nooka. R-C won with a score of Z4-14. Conference meeting held in Mazen. Marseilles was defeated by R-C with a score of 51-29. Librarian Club was elected. Second six-weeks exams. Thanksgiving vacation. Because of a disasterous fire the Basket ball game with St. Paul, Odell was postponed from Nov. 13 to Nov. 27. St. Paul won over R-C by a score of 35 to 26. All school play hThe Phantom Tigern was presentodg Nbs. J. Earl Smith substituted for Mrs. Binstock. Wedding Bells rang out for Mrs. Binstock,formerly, Miss Rossell. J Mr. Blatnik, a former teacher of Reed-Custer substitut- ed for Mrs. Binstock. Dedication to Pearl Harbor g Mrs. J. Earl 5mith substi- tuted for Mrs. Lyons, who was also married. R-C lost to Wilmington, score of which was 32-50. Senior girls defeated Junior girls in a game of basket- ball with a score of 19-5. The Sub-Debs of R-C gave a Christmas dance at the K-C Hall. The students of R-C rejoiced for the starting of the Christmas vacation. Christmas vacation started. New Years Day---morning after the night before. Classes were resumed at R-C. North Eastern Conference held in Morris. Morris be- ing the victor. Shirley Koca won the free throw championship. Girls' kick ball tournament---sophomores were victori- ous. Seneca met another defeat Ll-20. No school--too cold. The juniors right hands were seen more this day--why?- they received their ringsg Gardner walloped RPC by a score of 30-13. Mazon received a trimming with a score of 55-21. Miss Schoenfield spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. J. Earl Smith. Mr. Smith presented historic pictures to assembly. Semester Examsg 25--Harold Burke, former student of RfC was operated on for appendicitis. Registration for second semesterg R-C beat Wilmington LO-31. New schedule began. It originated a detension period. Mrs. Lyon's sister visited school. She came from Pittsfield high schoolg Mazon went home badly defeat- ed by a score of 55-ln. Valentines were the scene of beauty at R-C on this day. Seniors contributed their valentine money to the Red Cross for overseas kitsg R-C toured to Marseilles and was defeated Ll-35. Tuberculosis pictures were shown to student body. The Band under the direction of Mr. Tucker Drew played for the P.T.A. meeting. Easter vacation began on Good Friday. Senior girls took the Civil Service Test. Easter parade. The freshmen had a class party in the gym. Step-up-day was held for eighth graders.
