Redwood had a very strong Varsity Track team this year. The malnstay performers were Mike Sweeney, Rick Norton, Ken Benston, and Dennis Kuwatanl ln the track events. In the field events were Tom Malvino, Kip Ker- moian, Jay Lehman, and Steve McGee. Mr. Stan Tobiason headed the coaching staff. Assisting him were Mr. Rusty McManus and Mr. Don Zile, both first year coaches here at Redwood. Returning Iettermen Tim Novaclc, Scott Huber, Bob Zim- merman, Arnold Brooks, and Jeff Harrison provided lead- ership and inspiration for the golf team this season. lt was their experience that prevailed during the matches. One of the matches was played on the famed Spyglass Hill course in Monterey. Mr. Hart coached the team which again used the Meadow Club as their home course. Mrs. Marla Van Busklrk coached the Girls' Golf team at their home course, the Meadow Club in Fairfax. The team played in the Marin County Athletic League. Coach Al Endrlss led hls Varsity Baseball team to an- other successful season. The comblnatlon of consistent pitching and solld hlttlng car- rled them through the season. John Moresco, Bob Gorman, Steve Laden, and Gene Frey composed the pltchlng staff. Hitters Jlm Kegwlen, Bob Brown, Bob Gorman, and Scott Barrle provlded the power that drove In the runs. Redwood once again was a powerhouse In tennls compe- tltlon. This year the team ran lts consecutive wlnnlng streak to 50 matches. The top three players were Mark Rodnlck, Andy Walker, and Dan Tler- ney. Gary Walter, a top player last year, was unable to com- pete because of Illness. Mr. Glen Dickey was agaln the team's coach. As happens almost every year, Redwood had another power- ful Varsity Swlmmlng team. Two of the top swimmers were Brlan Hennesy and Paul Cane: both had double vlctorles ln two of the tlrst three meets. Blll Purcell, back from sab- batical leave, coached the squad. 147

With a new coach Miss Pamela Deschler, and the addltlon of several enthusiastic freshmen, the Glrls' Track team got off to a promlslng start thls season. For the first tlme, the glrls participated In a newly or- ganized M.C.A.L. meet, which Included the 2 best competitors ln each event. The Girls' Badmlnton team, coached by Mlss Ruth Frank, practiced every day after school, before and durlng the season. Badminton, unlike other glrls' sports, had a blg turnout, but unfortunately, not every- one could be on the team. The Glrls' Basketball team, coached by Miss Myrna Reed, showed their true Giant colors during their excltlng season. Wlth upper classmen returning and lower class- men entering, they demonstrated their abll- ltles as a powerful team.
