GIRLS P E 'QW Mrs Susan Bertelsen Miss Carol Hier Johnson Miss Myrna Reed Mrs. Margaret Schaulis Department Head Mrs Molly Boucher Miss Ruth Frank This year because of the addition of seventh period, there was no pre-period P.E. Those who wished to participate in a competi- tive sport were no longer required to attend P.E. early in the morning. Once again, however, athletes began practice during seventh period. Instead of the usual way of dividing the boys, by classes, the students were grouped according to their performances on the National Physical Fitness tests. These tests are administered to all The Girls' Physical Education department continued this year under the leadership of Miss Myrna Reed. Two new teachersjoined the staff, Mrs. Susan Bertelsen and Miss Ruth Frank, replacing Miss Jeri Slifer and Miss Betty Blod- gen. A change made this year was that of the selected sports program. For the first time, all senior girls had a first priority in choosing the sport they wished to take while junior girls with an A average in P.E. had second priority andjuni- or girls with a BU average had third priority. The expansion of Independent Study in Chemistry is being offered ., seven periods a day and is under the direction of Mr. Lighty and Mr. Guthrie. Independent Study' is where a student listens to class lec- tures and does experiments some days, while on other days he studies independently on the assigned concepts. The student then takes the test within a certain length of time and has several chances to repeat the test, if he doesn't pass the first time. The science department offers such courses as: biology, chemistry, physiology, and physics. Mr. Woodward Johnson is the head of the science department. There are many opportunities for students to act as lab assistants. Mr. Higgins returned this year after being on sabbatical, during which he studied and traveled. Mr. Girton was on leave of absence last year. A staff of twelve teachers made it a very successful year. Mr. Robert Baugh returned from his sabbatical leave of absence during which he was doing extended graduate work at the University of California. Miss Agnes Goldstein who took Mr. Baugh's place last year is now a permanent teacher at Redwood. Miss Sue Baynard was elected by the department to the position of Department Chairman this past year. W Last summer a workshop was held by the Foreign Language Department to develop materials for the new course Foundations of a Language . The course was designed for students who need help in languages before going mtO the regular first year. Mr. John Perrotis and Mrs. Beverly Concannon taught this course. The course was successful and will continue in the next year.
