Girls' State, sponsored by the American Legion, offered an opportunity for high school girls to learn about government. It was held at University of Calif- ornia at Davis. Each girl becomes a citizen of Girls' State, and a citizen of a city, a county, and a political party. Elections for offices are held, and the climax was an Inauguration at the end ofthe week. Many of the activities were to participate in active government, but there were also talent shows, an all-faith service, and a candle light- ing ceremony. Any girl may apply to Girls' State. Girls are chosen on the basis of their academic standings, and on their participation in school and community activities. Miss Marilyn Root was the ad- visor of Girls' State at Redwood. 181
