Redwood's Student Rights Club had its origin in a protest by a group of students over the per- formance of a Marine Corps Band at a school rally. The club,s goal was to investigate the rights students do have and how they may pro- tect or change those rights. These students felt that this area of their education had been neglected and wanted to do something about it. The club was instrumental in proposing an amendment to the Student Body Constitution which makes student body cards no longer a requirement for members of clubs that donit use student body funds. The club also expressed their support for the athletes who wanted to grow their hair during the off-seasonv. The club had guest speakers from the Students for a Democratic Society and the Peace and Freedom Party. In the future they plan to form- ulate a policy for protests and propose an amendment to the Student Body Constitution. The club was advised by Mr. John Thompson. The president was Bob Crossley, and Debbie Dowd, Dore Schawb and Mary Wertheimer comprised the guidance committee. A new club, Third World-BSU was formed at Redwood. While small in number, it was a strong organization because its membership was united in its desire to improve conditions at Redwood. The group communicated with BSU and Third World student clubs in Marin. The club listened to Mr. Horace White of the Marin County Human Rights Commission and Mr. Lanny Berry of Project Breakthrough- S.T.E.P. These speakers enabled the members to become more aware of exsisting programs for minority groups. The officers were President, Rita Townselg Vice-President, Melanie Hahng and Secretary, Barbara Brooks. The advisor was Mr. John Thompson.
