I fgx 1' A small blizzard does not stop this ski club member. I TELLECTUA AND PHYSICAL REW RD ACHIE ED THRO GH CLUBS This year SMICC was opened to anyone in- terested in exploring the psychological aspects of the mind. Activities began with the Carnival in the Quad . The members trained rats to run a track, and students bet on their favorite rat. Again this year SMICC members caroled at Napa State Hospital. Other SMICC activites included taking physi- cally handicapped children from Marindale School on a field trip, listening to speakers on the subject of hypnotism, and visiting the new Oakland Synanon. The climax of events was a ski trip by train to Mt. Shasta. To draw the year's activities to a close, they held their Sixth Annual SMICC Dance at which they crowned Miss SMICC of 196971 The officers this year were Sue Little, Presi- dent, Rich Levitan, Vice-President, and Chrissi West, Secretary, under the supervision of Mr. Duncan MacSwain. As the snow started falling, Redwood skiers began to wax their skis in anticipation of their first trip. The Ski Club made its first excursion Visvil piptt Carol Griffin, Orpheus editor, listens to the ideas of her fellow members S.M.C.C. members Sue Little, Diana Knight, Sheri Nichelini, Chrissie West, Rich Levitan, Inge Rudolph, and Judy Van Evera, put their noses to the grindstone. to Heavenly Valley in January. Dave Ingalls had four other trips planned to Bear Val- ley and Sugar Bowl. A ski skills test is given each trip, in addition to a written test, which must be passed in order tojoin the club. Miss Myrna Reed, the head advisor, as well as other faculty members, went on the trips as chaperones. Orpheus, a language arts magazine, was com- piled again this year by enthusiastic students. It was different this year in that they not only put out the magazine but initiated Root,', and sponsored Soma Rock Jams. Orpheus became an organization to encourage student interest in many forms of art. Many money making activi- ties were put on, but the main reason for these activites was to create interest in the language arts and to get students to know what Orpheus was about. Mr. Thatcher and Mrs. Markoff, the advisors for Orpheus, were very impressed with the student talent and glad to be a part of Or- pheus.

Marc North conducts Chamber orchestra MUSICIANS J 4 x . Bass, Scott Sinnott at Concert Under the direction of Mr. Sidney Gordon, the Redwood High Concert Band, Orchestra, and Stage Band, played to full houses for their winter and spring concerts. For the first time the performances were held in the Student Cent- er. The concert band made their annual trip to the elementary schools at which they performed various progams. In February several members of the band and orchestra attended the U.O.P. music clinic. This year the orchestra and band, once again, went to Sonoma State Hospital and received a very warm welcome and appreciation from the audience. The orchestra also played for the school musicals. The stage band, in addition to playing at two concerts, also played at a Redwood dance. This year a new group was formed, the Red- wood Chamber Orchestra. It was a student run organization which met two days a week after school. They held concerts for the school and for other organizations. The leader and conductor of the group was senior Marc North. 141
