ROW 4- Coach MacSwain, Coach Endriss, Joel Tobiason, Dave Dukes, Rich Evans, James Carroll, Mike Hamlet, Doug Houston, Coach Troppmann. VARSITY FODTBALL Coach Troppmann and the Redwood Giants reign as the kings of Marin County football. The Giants in winning the 1962 Marin County Athletic League title have amassed a five year record of 20 wins and 4 losses against league opponents, four district championships, and three M.C.A.L. titles. The 1962 Giants, led by captains Jim Troppmann and Steve Minu- toli, won the coveted M.C.A.L. title by defeating Tamalpais 20-14 on Thanksgiving morning before a record crowd of 9,500 screaming fans. All-League honors went to seniors Jim Troppmann, Doug Houston, Steve Solinsky, and juniors Dennis Schunk and Dave Auerbach. Tropp- mann was also voted to represent Marin County as the Hall of Fame selection and Steve Solinsky won the Senior Scholastic Award. Seniors playing their last game for the Red and Gray were: Ends: Doug Houston, Mike Hamlet, Dave Dukes: Tackles: Jeff Teather, Phil Weil, Larry Koontz, Bob Anderson, Jim Bacher: Guards: Paul Leslie, Larry Pierroz, Gary Gustafson: Center: Fred Bunkeri Halfbacks: John Contos, Dave Lindsay, Jerry Rumsey: Fullbacks: Steve Solinsky, Tom Gladney, Quarterback: Jim Troppmann. Redwood opened league play against the Novato Hornets after the Giants had a dismal practice season-three losses in a row to Riordan 7-14, Montgomery 6-13, and Oakland 0-26. The Redwood-Novato game was a difficult defensive battle but the Giants finally won by a 6-0 score with Quarterback Jim Troppmann scoring the only touchdown in the entire game. Defensive play by three junior Linebackers-Dennis Schunk, Steve Minutoli, and Joel Wallace-was a deciding factor in this first Giant win. Redwood's Giants battled the Green-men from Drake down to the wire scoring Redwood's second league win of the 1962 season. Senior Jerry Rumsey scored the first touchdown of the game running a full 60 yards with a punt return. Then after a 6-6 battle for three quarters of the game, Jim Troppmann connected with end Doug Houston with a 40 yard pass that was stopped on the three-yard line. With 30 seconds left in the game, junior halfback Dave Auerbach skirted left- end and scored the winning touchdown boosting the score to Redwood 12, Drake 6. The fighting Giants, with two wins under their belts, marched on to victory over San Rafael's team winning 14-O. Highlights of this game were the return of senior fullback Steve Solinsky to the Giant lineup, and tremendous defensive playing that limited the San Rafael Bulldogs to only 50 yards rushing and three yards passing. Doug Hou- ston, Joel Tobiason, Rich Klein, Jim Carroll, Bob Scheffer, Larry Pierroz, Jeff Teather, Dennis Schunk, Steve Minutoli, Joel Wallace, Dave Lind- say, Jon Little, and 'Jerry Rumsey all played a very important part in the Giant's defensive play. Solinsky and Jim Troppmann scored the only two touchdowns of the game and Troppmann kicked the two extra points giving the Giants the 14-O win. The Redwood Giants scored their fourth league win after dominat- ing Terra Linda's Trojans 20-0. Junior Dave Auerbach scored on two runs of 48 and 25 yards while junior Dave Cox scored on a 40-yard open field run. Cox also did most of the Giant punting during the 1962 football season. During the first half of the Redwood-Marin Catholic game, the Giants scored 24 points to the Wildcats' zero. Giant reserves played out the second half of the game scoring another six points for Red- wood. Highlights of the game were junior Dave Auerbach's tying of a school record scoring three touchdowns in one game, and the tough Redwood offense. Redwood and Tamalpais entered the Championship game with identical records of five wins and no losses in league play. The scene was set for the greatest prep game in the history of Redwood. Nine- thousand five-hundred fans were on hand that Thanksgiving morning to see the Giants come twice from behind to upset the favored Indians and win Redwood's third Marin County Athletic League championship in four year. Quarterback Jim Troppmann threw two touchdown throws to ends Doug Houston and Joel Tobiason, scored another TD on a quarterback sneak, and also kicked two extra points. Troppmann was voted Prep of the Week as a result of his efforts. The blocking of Steve Solinsky, the running of Dave Auerbach, Jerry Rumsey, and Dave Cox, and the professional playing of the Giants defense were all con- tributing factors to the Redwood Giants' success. At the conclusion of the Big Game, Giant coach Bob Troppmann had praise for his assistant Coach Al Endriss and Duncan Mac Swain and called the season a team effort on the part of every coach and player on the Redwood Giant squad.
