A.F.S., A.F.S., or The American Field Service, is a foreign exchange program for high school students. Redwood Senior, Don Rogers, spent Q month in Athens, Greece, and Senior, Virginia Scott, attended a school in Toulon, France, for one semester. Also under A.F.S., Helene Uddgren came to Red- wood from Stockholm, Sweden, and Ali Massoum- khomi, who is Redwood's spring vice-president, came from Tehran, lran. Each of these foreign exchange students came to spend one academic year here learning many of our customs and trying to familiar- ize us with the ways of their countries. ROW 1-Helene Uddgren, John Kaufmann, Jan Cress, Ali l Massoumkhani. ROW 2-Pete Holter, Don Rogers. The Experiment in International Living is open to all iunior and senior students who have a genuine interest in the world, both near and far from home. Several students are chosen each year to travel abroad for a summer under this valuable program. For one month, each student lives with a foreign family. After this four week homestay, they travel aboard for another month with a group of other Experimenters from different places. The program is primarily aimed at college stu- dents and young people up to the age of about thirty. However, in the past few years, the program for high school students has opened up with fine results. 1 ROW 1--Toni Banducci, Maria Massagli, Toni Harris, Stacy Moore, Linda Foster. ROW 2-Patty Benkert, Gordon Brown, Rav Qnrllar FA Rinnlnnm S.A.S. School Affiliation Service involves the partner- ship of two schools. On June 27, 1961, Redwood became affiliated with Volksoberschule Preetz, a school in Preetz, Holstein, Germany. S.A.S. is de- signed to help students get acquainted with foreign students' schools and lives. Each year we not only exchange students, but also mathematics, art, and history collections. Our exchange students under the S.A.S. program, for this year were Mat Schmidt, visiting the United States from Germany, and Patty Lesko, traveling from Redwood to Preetz, One of the big highlights of this program was the S.A.S. conference, held in the Redwood library, on Saturday, February 2, 1963. Schools from all over the bay area participated in this program. Tim Minnes, Matthias Schmidt, Tim Frost.

LTV 5. ASSISTANTS Driving down to the supermarket to purchase the required order of eighty-five Lamb'sbrains forthe class dissection or uncrating and unpacking the neces- sary instruments from their nests of popped popcorn are among the varied duties of the selected group of Lab Assistants. They busy themselves by assisting the various teachers in the chemistry, biology, phy- sics, or physiology departments by preparing experi- ments and demonstrations, making slides for the sci- enceclasses, and then clearing and cleaning the materials for further use, and assisting in the correc- tion of assignments. These assistants are under the direction of Mr. Johnson. ROW 1-Debbie Doyle, John Contos. ROW 2-Susie Gabbs, Don Rogers, Dianne Dienstein. The library assistant's work concerns itself with the circulation and shelving of books, the care of periodicals and newspapers, the processing of ma- terials, reference assistance, clerical work and many other details directed by Miss Mildred Mateer, Red- wood librarian. Phi Lambda Sigma, Redwood's honorary language society, is sponsored by Miss Wingard and Miss Baynard who initiate enthusiasm for dinners, speeches, interest in languages, fund raising, and interest in other lands and peoples, foreign or American. The students in Phi Lambda Sigma must maintain at least a B average and be recommended by their language teacher. Membership is something to be honored because of the exclusiveness of this club. This year Phi Lambda Sigma has, as honorary members, our three exchange students, Helene Uddgren, Ali Massoma- khani, and Matthias Schmidt. Redwood's drill team, the Redwoodettes, were newly formed this year under the direction of Miss Jerri Slifford. Almost every day after school one could see these energetic girls practicing their routines for the coming game. The organ- ization was small, but they have provided a strong foundation for the years to come. The Redwoodettes had originality and entertained the spectators at each football ga fe. Each girl made her own outfit, which consisted of a grey iumper, red blouse, red tights, and pom-poms. The Redwoodettes should be commended for their fine performance at each game and for the important part they ROW l-Nancy Ingram, Anne Murray, Coralie Allen, Tina Schultz, Jan Cress, Carol Spooner, Linda Foster, Faye Brown, Toni Harris, Camie Mills, Helene Danelia.
