These were praetite games, but made the Giants The Team To Beat. Redwood opened its new Marin County Athletie League season against Drake at Kent- tield. llolding its foe storeless. the Kiiants forged on to seore twenty-tixe points for them- selxes. The team showed outstanding defensiie ability in this wntest, as they held Drake to a mere 56 yards. The following game proved to he a tlose one, hut the faxoretl Giants remained on top at the final gun, heating the Noxgtto llornets '-o, In this game NUUUCT-ffltirtism I-mhrt estalu- lished one of his Redwood retords, turning under lol hard-earned yards, the most gained hy an individual in one game. XY'hen the Redwood Giants went against the San Rafael Bulldogs at San Rafael, it was neck-and-neck, but the photo finish showed Redwood on top, 6-U. Redwood emerged xietorious onte again hy defeating the Tamalpais Indians, Zo-'--Hrst time Redwood was stored upon in League play. With a '-H season record and a I-U League reeord, the Ciiants inet the Wildtats of Marin Catholit in the last game of the season. This was a high storing game, for the sunlight at Kentfield showed the storehoard to read: Redwood, 351 Marin Catholiv., 12. It was in this last game that two Redwood retords were established hy the '59 Itiitll.

FOVRTH ROXY: Coach lfndriss, Donn Meyer, lid Marshall, Bill Purtell, jeff Skinner, Hutch Hrear. Mike Hol'l'ni.in, Coach Troppman, Mike Allesio bored through XY'ildcat players to return a kick-otf 60 yards for a touchdovs n. This game also sau quarterbatk Roger Siemens throw a 41 yard touchdown pass to Dave Bortfeld. In this successful season all but two of Redwoods 18 records xx ere broken by outstanding players, both indiyidually and as a team. At the top of the indiyidual list was Curtis Embry with -i broken records to his credit. Dave Bortfeld set the record for the longest touchdown run from a scrimmage. Quarter- back Bob Ostaggi, who piloted the team to its championship, has two Redwood records to his name. Captain Sam Vfilliams yy as not yyithout record breaking performances. He carried the ball 100 times in the '59 season to a 5,52 yard average per carry. The Giants team, led by Captain Rick Weil in the line, held its season opponents to a net gain of only 595 yards while racking up 1,826 for themselxes. On the 1959 Marin County All-League Team, Redwood plated 5 members of the Giants champions. Captain Rick XY'eil, Mike Hoffman, and Prep-of-the-XY'eek Eric Lindner enforced the line. while speedy Curtis Fmbry and Prep-of-the-Vfeek Sam XVilliams stood side by side in the backrield. No less applause should go to Coach Troppman, whose leadership and outstanding coach- ing ability combined to produce a championship football team.
