I still remember the first couple weeks when everything seemed so strange to me. The food consisted, without exception, of hamburgers and sandwiches, sixteen year olds already drove their own cars, and the school was a huge labyrinth that had to be crossed in three minutes every hour, not to forget the safe (locker) in between. Tortunately activities like tennis, band, choir, and German Club helped me adjust to the new circumstances and to get to know other people. I had so much fun in all those school activities we don't have back in Germany. Of course, there weren t just exciting things. Tor example, the blizzards in the winter bugged me really bad. and my friends and family were so far away. But there were always people around me like in study hall, when Dan Phelps, and Andy Prank, etc. (all those weird American guys) made stupidjokes about me or like my best friends Pat. Kim. Mish, and Lynne, with whom I had lots of fun with. I just can't think of all the people I have been joking around with. I guess I also should mention my cute sociology teacher Mr. Bra land (he knows how much I love him) any my favorites Mr. Ashcroft (I don't like Paul Magart) and Mr. Erickson (I still remember my favorite phrase: off the wall ). After all. I'm really happy I came to Redwood Palls. I think it was one of the most exciting years in my lifeI Thanks a lot. especially to my family and all the people in Redwood Palls for your hospitality and friendliness that made me feel at home. I'm never gonna forget you I'll be back sometime Love. Maren Roster (or Moran, the PREAR) I felt so strange to think about how everything has worked. I couldn't believe at all when I found out that I really would be able to come to the U.S. And I felt kind of funny when I first came here to Redwood Palls which seemed a little similar to my home town in Japan. At first I stayed with a family in Mebraska for about a week, and all I could see out there was nothing but the farmlands so I'd strongly believed that I would stay all this year at the farmland — quiet and kind of easy going. Unfortunately (?) I was to stay in the town, so my experiences in Redwood were so different from what I'd expected before. Anyway, the life in Redwood was so busy for me. I mean, it can t be REALL Y busy, but PAST-GOIMG. At first I got confused and didn t know what to do. Especially, at school, the schedule was so different from ours in Japan. So I had a very hard time with language, too. I worried about it so much, and I asked what to do to my host family. Mrs. Treffy, and anyone I could think of. But the only answer I got was the fact that I'd worried about it too much. As far as I am an exchange student, those kinds of problems are always after me. Anyway, I've had a lot of different experiences which are unforgettable for me. I learned to be more positive than I'd ever been. I met a lot of friendly and different people, and I had a really nice family, which was quite different from my own. I 'd like to thank all of you sincerely: especially I 'd like to apologize to my host family as much as I 'd like to thank them. I felt so at home that sometimes I became naughty just like a little kid. I can t find the words to thank them. It is funny to say. but during the first three months. I felt like I would stay here forever. I mean, one year seemed so long. And I just love the long Minnesota winter and the short and busy summer. Maybe I'll be mixed up when I am back in Japan if I'm really in Japan or not. Because this town. Redwood rails, is so at home, and it 's already become my second home town. Thanks so much again. I Just had such a great year, and I could never forget it. Maybe I will come back some time. Love, Chappi. Ranako Makita from Japan 41 42 Row 1; Kelly Koewler. Shelly Wendler, Kristen Rindfleisch. I i The 1987 edition of Cardinal football was truly an exciting one. Dominated by seniors, we will remember the team for their diversity and explosiveness on offense. If there was ever a team that could be called The Comeback kids. this would be the group as evidenced by fourth quarter touchdown drives against Windom. Luveme. Jackson, and Tairmont. not since 1936. 51 years, has a Redwood Tails team started off with a 7 0 record. It was a thrilling season, one that generated excitement throughout our school and community. What your coaching staff will remember about you is the tremen- dous pride we felt in regard to the manner In which you repre- sented your school. We won very humbly and quietly, and we lost with class. We would have loved to replay a couple of games, but we also understood that no one promised the re- sults would always end In our favor. That is why we play the game. That is why we love the game. It is that lesson that carries over into life, and we trust that your involvement in the football program has helped you grow by helping you realize the value of hard work, discipline, and per- sistence. All were accomplished as the team worked hard, practiced for improvement and played excellent football at the end of the season. The seventh and eighth grade football team had a successful year. Our players were very excited and enthusiastic about participating in the program. One highlight this year was our Eootball Jamboree. Five schools were invited to participate in a controlled scrimmage at Memorial field. The players enjoyed the challenge and opportunity to improve upon their football skills. The players also enjoyed playing in the Cardinal Football League. The season ended with the ninth annual Super Bowl playoffs. K Seventh grade. Row 1: Jeff Mann. Tim Marlow. Billy Parker. Thank you, patrons, for your support of the Redwood rails■ Morton high School yearbook. The Cardinal Is a student publication, and we, the staff, believe we recorded the events that made our school year unique. Your support enabled us to present a quality annual to the student body for a reasonable price. Without your patronage, the yearbook would cost twice as much to produce, which would drastically curtail student sales. Another effect of your backing has been to provide an opportunity for interested students to team the skills of journalism: ad selling, layout, photography, writing, and editing. 166 ThE STArr
