This was the start of the presentation of Fiddler on the Roof. It all began with tryouts the first week of September. After much thought and consid- eration, the cast was chosen. Months of dedication and hart work, in time, led to a production that was later known as one of the best musicals ever presented at RFHS. Many other people helped to make this pro- duction a success. These people included: Directors-Mark Nelson, Virgil Felt, Gary Bestmann, and Carol Hudek; set crew, cos- tume and make-up crew; lighting, sound and photography crew and their director, Mr. Johnson; student director, Jann Hanning; Mrs. Kittelson's art classes. Fiddler on the Roof' will long be remem- bered because it was prepared for and pre- sented by people who really cared. 8 The Eye Opener 9 2. Ladies, if I've cold you once. I've told you a thousand 3. Harvest Festival, theme of the 1980 Homecoming Coronation, appropriately described the setting for that special Monday night, September 29. Arrangements of assorted dried weeds, pumpkins, and other fall decorations adorned the stage. Jeff Baker, Master of Ceremonies, introduced this year's Homecoming candidates. Debbie Trimnell Mattison expressed her thanks for having the chance to be the 1979 Homecoming Queen of Redwood Falls. After wishing the candidates luck, Debbie stepped aside for the crowning of the 1980 Homecoming King and Queen. Following a drumroll, Duane Heiling was crowned King by Chris Brauer and Kelly Hogan; Ronda Barnes was crowned Queen by Steve Heiling and Mike Schmit. Serenading this year's King and Queen were Sandy Kotval and Chris Hopkins with Moments to Remember.” After the Grand March, the Royalty, along with their subjects, paraded down to the athletic Field for a pepfest led by the enthusiastic RFHS pepband. 1. and 2. I experienced many new things: not only a totally new culture, but also a tiring nine hour flight to and from Europe, being away from my family for ten weeks, and the trials and tribulations of trying to fit everything into one suticase that wouldn't weigh too much when 1 got on the plane. Even though I had had two years of German with Herr Janning, learning German in class and speaking German every minute of a day is quite a different thing, so I was glad that my German family spoke English as well as they did. My AFS mother, Martha (Marta is the pronunciation), spoke very excellent English and understood everything 1 said if I spoke slowly and in simple language. One thing I especially learned about languages when I was away was that people in the United States don t speak English — we speak American! You may think that there is no no difference, but believe me there is. Also, you wouldn't believe all the slang that slips into your vocabulary without your even realizing it. The last four days that I was in Bremen all the AFSers that had been in Germany for the summer came to Bremen to talk over their experiences. My youngest sister Svantje came with me to the first meeting so I wouldn't get lost because Bremen has a population of 600,000. When all the AFSers got together it was such a relief to speak American and not German or British English that we all went crazy and talked and talked. My poor little sister who understood most of what 1 said at home, didn’t understand a thing! Now that I look back at my summer it all seems so far away. It has left a lasting impression on me about people and priorities. It will always be a special memory for me. My AFS family gave so much of themselves to me, a relatively total stranger, it leaves no doubt in my mind about the goodness of people the world over and the possibilities for complete world peace. One of the reasons that I got put in the family I did was because we share a common love for music. Even though I had never seen an opera and didn't know much about it, AFS matched us up, and I had a very good experience learning about opera. I was even able to attend the Opera Festival held in Verona, Italy, each summer. It just goes to show that until you really experience something, you really can't judge or pretend to know what it involves. I also learned a lot about architecture. We think that the U.S. is old because it had its 200th birthday, but compared to the buildings and theaters in Europe, the U.S. is just a baby. I could go on for hours about all the things I tried, learned, enjoyed, and experienced; but mostly I learned that no matter how far you travel, people are essentially the same world over, and it is always nice to come home. 16 Foreign AFS’ers As I think back on my AFS year, I have a hard time trying to express my feelings. It is made up of so many things that it is quite confusing to summarize in a couple paragraphs. However. I can say that I'm very grateful to all the people who made my year in Redwood Falls possible . . . and so great. The two principle centers of my stay and from which everything started are my host family and Redwood Falls High School, including all the friends I met and shared this year with. I realize how lucky I am to have been able to live such an experience I have learned a lot about the United States and its people, but it also helped me to have an outside view of my own country that will help me to understand it even better. Thank you. everybody; I am not about to forget this year!! Fabrice Suplisson France Many times during the year I have thought about the first time I saw Redwood Falls. I remember how I thought this is where I am going to live for the next year, in this town that I don't know anything about, and among these people that were strangers to me. Now when my year is almost over, it is hard for me to believe that all the friendly people at Redwood Falls were at one time strangers to me. I can honestly say that my year here as an AFS- student has been the best in my life. Everybody, especially my host family and friends, have all tried to make me feel at home. Some occasions that I will always remember are. for example, when my friends organized a surprize party for me on my birthday, and of course. I will never forget my Christmas vacation that I spent in Arizona and California with my host family. These and many other things which I have experienced here in the United States will be very special memories to ring back to Sweden. Thank you. Redwood Falls, for everything and a special thanks to my host family, friends, and the AFS-chapter. It started with singing at the Southwest Choral Festival. Next came the Christmas Concert where the ensembles also sang several numbers. This year the Concert Choir appeared on the Sounds of Christmas program on KEYC TV. A special feature of the concert given in February was an orchestral accompaniment to the cantata Gloria. Many choir members participated in the District Solo and Ensemble Contest, and several went to the Region-State Contest. As in previous years the kissing booth had a lot of business. The cafeteria was packed with carnival goers playing bingo or eating refreshments. The whole school hummed with the voices of people laughing and talking. Small children enjoyed less compli- cated games like ring toss, go fish, dart throw, and the duck pond. Other attractions were face painting and the cake walk. nr body 1. Does any one have a bingo yet? 2. Are all these cakes for me? 3. Young and old pushed friends into the arms of the mad kissers. 4. Junior-Senior Banquet Finger Licking Good The Juniors and Seniors enjoyed a delicious meal of turkey, potatoes, gravy, stuffing, corn, relishes and best of all apple crisp at the Jr. Sr. Banquet. Beth Anderson and Pat Pryor got the whole ball of wax rolling by telling some jokes, they were very corny jokes, but everybody laughed anyway. The Senior Serenaders showed their true personalities as they sang Hey, Big Spender.” Pat and Beth announced some awards to deserving Seniors. Kelly Hogan received the Miss Hair award. Sherri Ahrens was awarded Best Dressed. Steve Jackson was lucky enough to receive the Worst Singer award. Loren Sawatzky, although he didn't receive any awards, got two standing ovations while accepting awards for ricky Seaman and Linda Cornell. These were only a few of the awards presented to the Seniors. The baby pictures were a scream as Stephanie Sommerfeld presented them with style and wit. Cindy Schmidt had everyone rolling in the aisles as she read the class will. The biggest hit of the night was the D.W. Destroyers. The audience kept the group on beat as they clapped and stamped their feet to the music. The crowd screamed and whistled with a lot of enthusiasm. All in all the evening was a fun and exciting time. The Junior Senior Banquet will not be forgotten. 127 Prom Reach Out and Touch Someone. I Mark. 1 wish we could be like this forever 1. Prom couple danced to the music by Down Home. Couples walked through the castle and stood on the drawbridge. On April 25, 10 couples stepped through the looking glass in to the world of Camelot. The couples lined up inside a huge castle on a hill surrounded by trees and rivers. The ladies were all dressed in long beautiful flowing gowns. The gentlemen were dressed in colorful tuxedos. The air was warm and the wind was calm so the prom would take place in the royal courtyard. The pages blew their trumpets to announce the beginning of the royal prom. The couples presented themselves one by one to the people of the township. They gracefully and proudly pranced in front of the spectators, stopping a few seconds on the drawbridge. The prom goers danced to the music of Down Home. Punch, peanuts and mints were served aa refreshments by the servants (Sophomores). At 12:00 all the couples stepped back through the looking glass. The dance was the most elegant and romantic part of the evening, but it was just the beginning. Chauffeurs picked up their riders and took them home to change for the movie. The movie was a comedy called Airplane. After the movie everyone went for breakfast at the Masonic Hall. A hungry crew downed rolls, juice and milk. Prom was a very enjoyable evening and most couples ended the evening with a tender good night kiss. 1. How long do we have to hold this building up? 2. Coffee, tea or me. 3.
