It was a beautiful Friday night for football. The game was billed as “The Battle of the Cardinals.” It pitted a perennial conference powerhouse in Luverne against Redwood Falls, which had an impressive 1-4 won-loss record at the time. To the surprise of many, the game was a dogfight from the start. Redwood Falls’ superior defense stacked up the potent wishbone attack of Luverne throughout the game. On the other hand, the Redwood offense sputtered and backfired against Luverne which featured a 275 and 295 pound tandem at the defensive tackle positions. Then Redwood broke the game open when Tim Jahnke dashed four yards for a score, and Tom Zimmerman blasted his way for a touchdown from two yards out. The defense added a safety and when the dust had settled, Redwood Falls had won by the score of 15-6. It was an impressive showing by the Cardinals, a showing that turned the whole season around. Hopefully, it was also the game that turned the entire Redwood Falls football program around and set it back on the right track for a long time to come. 13

Without the floats that the Junior and Senior high students worked so hard to prepare, the parade would not have been as successful as it was. The 8th graders won the float competition with the theme of their float that was inspired by the popular movie “Star Wars” 12
