ALMA MATER Redwood we love thee, We sing thee our praise Never shall we forget Our high school days. Home of the Cardinals — We’re proud of thy fame. Oh, may we ever Honor thy name. Hail Alma Mater Hail Redwood High. ABNER GRENDER 1979 CARDINAL REDWOOD FALLS HIGH SCHOOL REDWOOD FALLS, MINNESOTA 56283 VOLUME 6i How many times have you been listening to an album or the radio and suddenly been reminded of a special person or event? We often buy records for specific reasons. One of these reasons may be that it paints a memorable picture in our minds. Just as music does, a yearbook can convey many good memories, too. Your high school days probably don’t seem that special right now, but in the years after graduation you will realize just what they meant to you. These memories are preserved in a yearbook and are available at the touch of a finger or the glance of an eye. The following pictures symbolize melodies which can alone evoke memories, but the words join in to produce a harmony that makes this 1978-79 school year more meaningful! Editors RFHS HITS OF 1978-79 “The Young and the Restless ... Student Life “Feelin’ Stronger Everyday” ... Sports “Workin’ on a Groovy Thing” ... Organizations “Something’s Cornin’ Up” ... Activities “People” ... Underclassmen “Looks Like We Made It” ... Seniors “Takin’ Care of Business” ... Faculty “Everything I Own” ... Indexes “You’ve Got a Friend” ... CENTER LEFT: Rebel CENTER RIGHT: The Queen and her court dance the night away. ABOVE LEFT: Phil Oman assists Queen Lisa as she arrives at the game. ABOVE RIGHT: Students showed lots of enthusiasm during Homecom- ing Week. Homecoming week got off to an enthusiastic start with the queen’s coronation held on Monday, Oct. 6. Spirits were high as the program began with introductions of the football, volleyball, and tennis teams, the CC runners, and their cheerleaders. Lending his talents as Master-of-Ceremonies for the evening was Mike Peterson. The Mellow Fellows provided the entertainment with their interpretation of “Viva L’Amour”. Retiring Queen Mary Miska wished luck to the teams and to the candidates before relinquishing her crown. The tension was at its height when Lisa Schweiss was crowned 1978 Homecoming Queen by team representatives Dave Heiling (football) and Mike Koehn (CC). Before giving a few words of thanks, Lisa was serenaded by Kelly Maguire with “Three Times a Lady” accompanied by Pat Hess. The Homecoming festivities drew to a close with the dance on Friday night. The music was provided by “Rebel” and enjoyed by all. Another successful Homecoming has come and gone leading the way to a promising year of memorable activities. 11 Without the floats that the Junior and Senior high students worked so hard to prepare, the parade would not have been as successful as it was. The 8th graders won the float competition with the theme of their float that was inspired by the popular movie “Star Wars” 12 It was a beautiful Friday night for football. The game was billed as “The Battle of the Cardinals.” It pitted a perennial conference powerhouse in Luverne against Redwood Falls, which had an impressive 1-4 won-loss record at the time. To the surprise of many, the game was a dogfight from the start. Redwood Falls’ superior defense stacked up the potent wishbone attack of Luverne throughout the game. On the other hand, the Redwood offense sputtered and backfired against Luverne which featured a 275 and 295 pound tandem at the defensive tackle positions. Then Redwood broke the game open when Tim Jahnke dashed four yards for a score, and Tom Zimmerman blasted his way for a touchdown from two yards out. The defense added a safety and when the dust had settled, Redwood Falls had won by the score of 15-6. It was an impressive showing by the Cardinals, a showing that turned the whole season around. Hopefully, it was also the game that turned the entire Redwood Falls football program around and set it back on the right track for a long time to come. 13 GUYS AND DOLLS “ONE OF THE BEST” Candidates for couple of the year? 14 Tryouts were completed the first week of September and the cast of 39 was chosen for “Guys and Dolls”. A month of hard work and dedication began to grow into what would be later known as a “hit” on the performance nights of November 8, 9, and 10. The story of Guys and Dolls involves gambling, love, and saving souls. Taken from New York’s Broadway in the late 1920’s, a group of gamblers are scrambling around to find a place for their crap game. On the other hand, a group of missionaries are trying to prevent the gamblers and all others from giving their souls to the devil. The gamblers finally do find a place for their crap game, but eventually the missionaries also come up with a dozen assorted sinners (gamblers). One problem still remains unsolved throughout the story, though. Two unhappy dolls are on the edge of dumping their guys, but together they decide they’re crazy and should “Marry the Man Today” instead! This they do, and thus another story ends happily ever after. In addition to the cast’s success, many other people helped to support them. These people include: Director-Paul Schwartz, Pit and Director- Gary Bestmann, Set Crew and Director-Harold Casselton plus Miss Hobson’s art class, Student Director-Angela Revier, Lighting, Sound, and Photography Crew and their Director-Mr. Johnson, and last but not least-the public and their enthusiasm! “Guys and Dolls”, with no doubt in mind, was the talk of the town after its production. Why? It was prepared and presented by people who cared enough to entertain their audiences! 15 UPPER LEFT: Arvide Abernathy gives Sarah advice. TOP CENTER LEFT: Lt. Brannigan doing his duty. The population is one of the main differences. There are about 65,000 people in Rome. That’s a lot compared to Redwood. I’ve learned a lot about people during the course of my stay. It seems nice to walk down a street and know just about everyone here. It’s nice to see a smiling face greet you just about everywhere you go. It’s gonna be hard to leave here, but I have a lot of memories to take back. I’ve met a lot of friends, and we’ve shared a lot of good times. Times that made me appreciate the people here in Redwood. Carolyn Hladun Rome, New York Hi! it’s really hard for me to express my feelings about my AFS year here on a piece of paper. There are still a few things I want to talk about. First of all I want to thank everybody that helped to make my year the wonderful experience it has been. Of course, I have had hard times, but overall, the year has been super. When I first came here I didn’t know what to expect, because it is really hard to be a foreigner in a different society. I am glad I joined the football team. It really helped me to get to know some peo- ple and to feel a little more secure. I really learned a lot this year. I have seen the differences between the community where I live in Norway and the Redwood community. I see a lot of things that could be improved in Norway, and I also see some things that could be better here. There is one thing I have on my mind — no society can be perfect, but everybody tries to do it by the way it is best for them. With these words I will again say “thank you” to everybody. I will remember you and this year all my life. Also, a special thanks to AFS. Coming off four straight disastrous seasons, new head coach Rick Ellingworth directed the Cards to a very respectable 4-5 mark. Their Southwest Conference record of 4-3 was good enough for a third place tie. The Cardinals were led by a standout defense which yielded only 10.8 points per game, 4th best among conference teams. This stubborn unit yielded only 1869 yards on they year, best since 1964. The offense, on the other hand, had trouble moving the ball and sputtered through most of the year. However, they did have some sparkling performances with senior co-captain Tim Jahnke providing much of the entertainment. Take, for instance, his 75 yard touchdown run against Jackson that held up in a 6-2 speaker. Then against the perennial powerhouse Worthington Trojans he sprinted 87 yards to paydirt with a kickoff that set the tone for a thrilling 22-14 vitory. Honors were awarded to the following; all- conference squad — Jim Boots, Jeff Weyer, and Dave Heiling; most quarterback sacks — Howard Prahl with 11; all-conference honorable mention — Tim Jahnke and Tom Zimmerman (also led interception parade with 3); Mr. Football 1978 player — Jim Trefry; most valuable — Paul Boots; defensive player of the year — Dave year — Tim Heiling; and offensive player of the Jahnke. 24 VARSITY: ROW 1: Kevin Nelson (Student Trainer), Tim Mariner, Tom Vanderwerf, Tim Jahnke, Dale Olerud, Chad Schiller, Jim Boots, Jeff Jensen (Student Manager). The Cardinals, under the direction of first year coach David Homan, struggled to a 5-15 record A lack of height and too many turnovers proved to be the Cardinals’ biggest downfall during the course of the season. Senior guard Tim Jahnke, an all-conference honorable mentiom performer, paced the team in scoring with a 16 point per game average. Look for the Cards to go a long way next year, though. With numerous underclassmen and some imported height from the B-squad, the Cardinals will be tougher than ever. CC ’A SEASON TO REMEMBER’ Girls Cross Country Success seems to follow Coach Ward and the girls cross country team wherever they go. Led by Joan Hopfenspirger who set 11 course records and captured 2nd in State, the girls season record was 50 wins and 4 losses. Even though there were outstanding runners, it was the combined effort of the team that carried them so well through the season and later onto state competition. The team will be graduating only two seniors this year, so they should do well and are looking forward to next year. GIRLS CC TEAM: ROW 1: Ruth Haugan (mgr.), Sue Johnson, Paulette Gerrety, Lori Schmit. ROW 2: Coach Ward, Casey Hassinger, Laura Schmidt, Joan Hopfenspirger, Cindy Schmidt. 30 STATE RUNNERUP CHAMPS Cross Country, second in state in 78. “We set our goals and surpassed them” Topping their last year’s record, 66-12, the harriers ended the season at 90-5. The CC runners, with their most successful season ever, placed first in 9 meets, second in two, third in one, and finished with 9 inviational championship trophies-the Southwest Conference, District 10, and Region Championships. Making the All Conference team were Mike Koehn - Individual champion and Randy Goblirsch. In District, the Cards swept 5 of the top 7 places, placing Koehn, Hindermann, Goblirch, Neuharth, and Gaffney on the All-District team. At Region in Ortonville, the RF runners ran away from the field, finishing 62 points ahead of runnerup Springfield (26-88). All- Region honors went to Mike Koehn - individual champion, Ed Hindermann 3rd, and Randy Goblirsch 4th. On November 4, at the Cross Country State Championships, the Cards gave all they had finishing second to Rochester Lourdes 93-114. It was a season their coach, Doug Ward, will never forget. The 1978 volleyball team had their ups and downs, but it was an interesting challenge for them. Their season record of 16-5 led to a District 10 title, a Region 3A title, and another berth at State. Without the team effort and a lot of hard work, these challenges would not have been met. All-Conference members were Kim Brennen, Jean Hopfensprirger, Sandi Stark, and Honorable Mention was awarded to Sandy Prahl. Kim Brennen was also chosen to an All- State team. Congratulations girls! ' The girls’ basketball team had another fine season and topped it off with their fourth consecutive trip to the state tournament. The girls were led this year by seniors Joan and Jean Hopfenspirger and Barb Dording. The other two starters were Dawn Zimmerman and Lorie Kammerer. There were many highlights during the season. Joan became the first girl in Redwood Falls’ history to score 1,000 points in her career, and had a total of 1,202. She was also named as one of the five finalists for the title of Miss Basketball. Barb became the second Redwood Fall girl to score 1,000 points, and had a career total of 1,126. The team was second in Southwest Conference with Joan, Jean, and Barb being named to the all-conference squad. The team won their fourth straight district and region titles. This year’s record was 23-3, with the losses coming at state and early in the season to Worthington. Since girls’ basketball began in Redwood Falls, the teams have accumulated a record of 120- 10. The girls had a great year, and everyone should be very proud of them for what they have done for girls’ basketball at RFHS. The seniors will truly be missed, but there is a fine group of reserves coming back and a group of sophomores coming up. Coach Nelson is looking forward to another exciting year next year. The outlook for next year is very promising as only one senior graduates. The season’s been great, girls! The Cardinals had a lot of potential, but ended up with a disappointing 4-8 record. As a team, the Cardinals hit .245 while the pitching staff had a combined E.R.A. of 3.45. Junior shortstop Terry Childs led the hitting parade with a .400 batting average. He was followed by junior centerfielder Jeff Weyer who battled at .385 clip and senior pitcher Jeff Sandgren who hit .353. Sandgren was the ace of the pitching staff with his 303 won- loss record and 2.65 E.R.A. Jeff Sandgren and Jeff Weyer were named to the All Southwest Conference squad while Terry Childs was given honorable mention. ABOVE: Jeff Sandgren was the ace of the pitching staff. Among the trophies brought home were the prestigious Southwest Conference title, District 10 for the 4th straight year, and Region 3 for the 3rd time in 4 years. Representing Redwood at state this year were: Tim Jahnke, 220,440, mile relay; Todd Jahnke, mile relay; Chad Johnson, mile relay; Kevin Seime, mile relay; Mark Poss, mile relay; Tom Zimmerman, pole vault; Mike Koehn and Randy Goblirsch, 2 mile; and Jim Gaffney, 1 mile run. The girls’ track team had 2 track meets before the Conference, and they won both of them. The Cardinals were 2nd in Conference behind Marshall, first at District, and first at Region. Pacing the Cards this season were Joan Hopfenspirger, Kim Brennan, Barb Dording, Sandy Prahl, and Paulette Gerrety. Joan, Kim, and Sandy all advanced to the state meet where Joan successfully defended her mile run title and won again for the 3rd time with a time of 5:09:24. Compiling a season record of seven wins and three losses, they captured the District 10 title, placed second in Region 3, and third in Southwest Conference. The team was led by senior captain Dawn Zimmerman who was 1 singles in District, 2 singles in Region, and went on to State. Next year should hold great promise. BOYS’ TENNIS The boy’s tennis team had another successful season under the direction of coach Lance Zellmann. It compiled an 11-2 record, won the Southwest conference team championship, won the District 10 championship, and was runner-up to powerful Madison in Region 4. Individually, Dale Olerud, Greg Duscher, Jim Nolting, and Tom Theobald finished long and illustrious careers. Dale won the Southwest conference and the District 10 singles titles three consecutive years, won the region 4 singles title last year, and compiled a 122-25 record during the last six years. Greg and Jim compiled career records of 70-19 and 83-25 respectively. They also won the District 10 doubles title last year. Tom compiled a career record of 46-28 while finishing 2nd in the District 10 singles tournament and 4th in region 4 single play. Also playing well and showing tremendous improvement were juniors Mike Pryor, Dennis Sommerfeld, Scott Hennen, and sophomore Nathan Hjulberg. Look for these fellows to be the backbone of the next year’s team. LEFT: Greg Duscher and Jim Nolting wrap up their high school careers with impressive records — 70-19 and 83-25 respectively. SMITH TO STATE The boys’ golf team, coached by Ed Braland, was made up of Pat Smith, Steve Erickson, Tim Smith, Mike Baker, Mike Smith, and Mark Baker. The team started out hot, winning it’s first four meets, then losing to Marshall and Worthington which took away any hope of a Conference championship. They won the District 10 championship by a wide margin, then placed second to Montevideo in region play. Pat Smith led the team by placing first in District play and second in region. He placed fourth in state competition after being tied for first place after the first day. 44 RIGHT: Steve Erickson tees off at the first green. WINNING SEASON The girls’ golf team, coached by Phil Hall, did it again-only this time more victorious! Ending their season with a dual record of 9-0, they went on to capture honors at Marshall. Next, they took the District 10 championship with a team score of 287. The girls went on to win the Region 3A golf meet with a team score of 273 and a third straight trip to the state tournament to be held at Forest Hills. With the state tournament being divided into Class A and Class AA this year, Redwood found the competition of Albany and Caldonia to be tough in the Class A division. Shooting 18 holes a day for two days, Redwood made a good showing both team-wise and individually. Albany’s score of 520 gave them first place, but Redwood’s team score of 573 gave them second place honors and another trophy to add to their collection! State tournament participants were the following: Kim Myers with a 180 to tie for 7th place, Sue Buckley with a 187 to tie for 14th place, Lisa Evenson with a 206 tying for 35th place, and Sandi Smith with a 223 giving her 44th place. Next year will be just as challenging, but so will the girls’ golf team. 45 CHEERLEADERS 7th Grade: BELOW LEFT; (Front to Back) - Lori Vanderwerf, Julie Hanson, Jenny Feldt. Seen through the eyes of an FFA member, tomorrow is as bright as that sun pushing its way between earth and sky. Vocational agriculture instruction, which is the basis for the FFA program, trains a new generation of agriculturists who are ready for action in agricultural careers. All new horizons of student involvement in FFA lead to that bright future. Raising a gilt and her first litter; the first sales job at a farm supply store; getting the nerve to make a motion in a chapter meeting; earning the Greenhand degree of membership; delivering that first speech in class and going on to the contest to represent the chapter; helping with chapter’s Arbor Day project or selling seeds; taking parents to the annual banquet. HIGH CHOIR Throughout the school year, the Junior High Choirs toiled over becoming “independent singers” each day for five minutes to improve their sight- singing skills. Their year was highlighted by presenting three concerts: Christmas, Winter, and Spring. The Eighth and Ninth Grade Choirs combined forces for a section of the spring concert to present a choreographed version of “Free to Be ... You and Me”. Costumes worn suggested the title of the program. We will always remember the crazy, but unique hats and the bright, yellow oversized sunglasses. 7th GRADE: R.l (L. to R.): Darla Jahn, Tina Simning, Jennifer Lanz, Kristi Kuehn, Kira Nordby, Pam Smith, Jim Stepan, Randy Seaman, Dawn Haase, Shelly Robbins, Deb Peterson, Lisa Jensen. HIGH CHOIR Throughout the school year the Concert Choir and Girls’ Choir have remained active in developing their musical skills which were shown in the quality of their performances. The new carpeted risers and acoustical shells also helped to add to the over-all effect of the concerts. Beginning with a barbeque at the Schwartz’ farm home, the choirs moved into a busy fall which included the S.W. Conference Choral Festival at Marshall and the musical, “Guys and Dolls.” During the Christmas season, caroling groups sang at nursing homes, Rotary, and many other organizations around town. The Christmas Concert began at “Santaland” and finished on the risers in robes with the a capella Christmas Choral Sound. The 9-voice Mellow Fellows were actively singing programs at various banquest. “0 Lutefisk”, “The Banner” at the girls’ BB games, and “Rigoletto” will never be forgotten. In March the Sacred-Spiritual Concert was marked by a high quality performance by the choirs. Concert Choir achieved all three Class 1 star ratings at the Large Group Contest held at Fairfax. Special concerts featuring Ethnic Folk Music were given by the Concert Choir and Mellow Fellows at the Fools’ Festival held in the Armory. Other events included All-State Choir tryouts, success at District, Region, and State solo and ensemble, contests, and Commencement. The Spring Concert presented contemporary music including “Psalm 92” with brass ensemble accompaniment. The highlight of the concert was the musical magic of “Pippin”, a relatively new Broadway musical. The combined choirs presented the musical’s highlights with full choreography, featured dance group, solos, duets, bright costumes, and instrumental combo. HIGH BAND The RFHS Band opened the school year by providing music % for the home football games, including the show, “The Bands Played On.” They also led the Homecoming parade, and had planned to do a half-time show with the 8th and 9th Grade Band; but the weather caused a change in plans, and the show was performed in the gym at a pep-fest. The highlight of the fall season was the Indoor Marching Band Concert that includ- ed many new tunes and arrangements. A Christmas concert was presented for the student body, band members’ parents, and alumni on the last day of school before vacation. During the winter season the band played for various pep-fests, athletic contests and district, regional and state tournaments. The big event of the year was the spring concert with Mr. Miles Johnson of St. Olaf College as guest soloist. Mr. Johnson held clinic sessions for band members throughout the day. Spring activities included soloists and ensembles that took part in the district and state contests, a brass group with the choir, and various groups and solos for community and church af- fairs. The year’s performances culminated with a performance at the Memorial Day observance. They performed in the Fall Concert with the Junior High Choirs and in the Winter and Spring Concerts with the eighth and ninth grade Band. In addition to these concerts, they shared their talents by performing at the Robert Milton Home and two local rest homes in the Fall and Spring. The eighth and ninth grade Band began the year by performing in the Homecoming Parade and Half-time Football Show. They appeared in Concert during the Winter and Spring, and performed for the Montevideo Middle School in April. Due to scheduling conflicts, it was held on Monday, rather than the Friday before prom. Chicken, baked potatoes, and corn rounded out the meal which was hosted by the Valley Supper Club in North Redwood. Master and Mistress of Ceremonies, Steve Erickson and Lisa Evenson, added a touch of humor while introducing various elements of the program. Tim Wittwer and DeeDee MacDougall read the Senior class will and prophecy, accompanied with a nostalgic look into the Senior’s childhoods. Michelle Hopkins, Tom Zimmerman, Harmony, and Junior members of the Mellow Fellows provided musical entertainment. Senior class president Kristi Nemitz closed the banquet with thanks to the Junior class. JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM Saturday, April 28, 1979. The evening of the Junior-Senior prom finally arrived. As chauffeur- driven cars arrived at the school, well-dressed cou- ples were dropped off where lights and flashes of cameras followed the couples in. The couples had arrived for a “Night in the City.” When all 117 couples were ready, the first strains of music announced the beginning of the Grand March. The theme was carried out well by the decorations, especially the beautiful skyline and city lights in the background. After the Grand March, the band “Caravan” provided the music for the promgoers until 12:00. At midnight, the couples were again picked up by their chauffeurs and taken home for a clothes change before going to see “Chicken Chronicles.” After the movie, the couples were taken to the Masonic Hall for a light breakfast of rolls and juice. The chauffeurs then made one final trip as they took the sleepy promgoers home, ending a terrific prom. ABOVE LEFT: Janet Halscher and her date look on as the band “Caravan” entertained the couples. The Concert Choir sang “Land of Hope and Glory” as the exercises opened with the procession of the graduates. Rev. Charles Christensen of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church gave the invocation after which Randy Bunting, salutatorian, gave the welcome. Kristi Nemitz, class president, gave the memorial, and Karen Heiling, valedictorian, gave some beautiful parting thoughts. Superintendent Thomas Lykins introduced Aubrey Dirlam, retired lawmaker, who delivered the 94th commencement address. His message was “Nothing is more permanent than change.” As Iver Christopherson presented the graduating class, Board of Education members Shirley Espeland and J.G. Willshire handed out the diplomas. Selections by the choir included “Corner of the Sky” and “Hail, Redwood High”. After Rev. Christensen gave the benediction, the Concert Choir, minus the seniors, closed with the “Blessing of Aaron”. As the recessional strains of “Land of Hope and Glory” rang out, the tearful graduates left the stage with many wonderful and never to be forgotten memories of their Alma Mater, Redwood High.
