With the turning of the school calendar came the month of October, holding within its bounds a unique experience for the student body of RFHS. Soon football boys, cheerleaders, selected committee members, and everyone was busily indulged in meeting the hot deadlines for Car- dinal Days, a hectic but rewarding experience for all who chose to par- take. With the sun on Thursday arose the mysterious question of who was to be crowned 1970 Cardinal Days Queen as well as which brave squad of female gridders was to become victorious in the awesome Powder Puff football game. The questions in doubt were solved when Paula Swenson was crowned by football co-captains Tom Inglis and Mike Perrizo to reign over the Cardinal Days activities and the seniors pulled out an inspiring victory in the girl’s game. However, these events by no means ended these special days at Redwood. With Friday’s awakening came an enthusiastic pep-fest in which even a few members of our fine faculty displayed their talents before the student body. Then, with high hopes for happiness, the bands, queen candidates, cheerleaders, and costumed students began the brisk and anti-tradi- tional Cardinal Days parade at 6:30 P.M. Following this brassy event came the big moment for everyone — kick-off of the football game with the Windom Eagles. After this exciting, hopeful, but tears-in-the- end contest, RFHS Cardinal-backers and even a few Windom students ridded themselves of any surplus energy to the rapture of Midwest. Then, with tired feet, mixed thoughts, and the spirit of “It all went by so fast’’ everyone prepared to meet THE END. FAR LEFT: Pat Svendsen, carrying a PRIDE sign and dressed for action, led the student snake winding through the parade. Based on the classical novel Oliver Twist, the striking musical recaptured the mystery and hazi- ness of the smoggy London streets. The cast, under the direction of Mr. Lewis, captivated multiple viewers as they recreated the elaborate ladies and gentlemen of 18th centu- ry England. Then hearts were torn as the helpless figures of orphans from English workhouses came alive with their pleas for pity. Such was the stage for this most recent and successful production. 12 ABOVE: Oliver experiences Bill Sykes disapproval of his last action. Punt, pass, and kick With a cry of battle and a cloud of smoke signaling the spirit of fire, the RFHS gridders of 1970 dove into this year’s football season with hopeful inclinations. After several hot weeks of down to earth drills, the Cards of red thundered onto Memori- al Field to grasp a booming victory from the Tracy Scrappers. After this hearty triumph, however, our boys unfortunately learned to accept the harsh bruises of defeat as they managed only two more wins in a tough, but memorable season. WE THEY 9 TRACY 8 6 ST. The Cardinals compiled an 11-7 overall rec- ord and then were defeated by Sanborn in the first round of the district tournament. The present team record was the best compiled by a RFHS basket- ball team for many years. Finishing fourth in the Southwest Conference, the Cards highlighted their winning season by being the first team since we joined the conference to finish in the first division. The sprint medley team consisting of Tim Nelson, John Kluczny, Mike Nordby, and Chuck Otto low- ered the record from 3:58 to 3:57.2. Senior quarter-miler Leon Zeug received a trophy for “trackman of the year” and senior hurdler Mark Patten received a leadership award. With the return of one of our editors from the 1970 yearbook summer-workshop at the Universi- ty of South Dakota in Brookings, staff members old and new assumed their appointed positions to face the task that was in store for them. Deadlines were established and plans for this year’s publi- cation were drawn up. Then, in order to receive a few hot tips on the do’s and don't's of yearbook editing, the four editors, the photo editor, and Mr. Siewert took a jaunt to the halls of Gustavus Adolphus College where some sugges- tions toward a successful high school annual were present- ed. Finally, with all the ads for the upcoming yearbook sold and sales records set, editors and apprentices commenced to make the 1971 CARDINAL soar! In another corner our Feature Editor Lori “Tork” would be frantically scribbling out the late scoop. News Editor JoAnn would be seen bent over the margin cut- ter or diligently pasting the credits box. Our zany head photogra- pher Steve, would be constantly dashing in with his deadline pics. All this action would only be interrupted by a flutter of wings as one of the never-to-be-found editors would come flying through the door with more orders. From the beginning of our venture in the fall, one thought domi- nated our entire effort: change. We wanted a different kind of pa- per, one which spoke to the students — every kind of student. Our ROUSER staff felt that our work would be worthwhile if we could produce a paper that the students really wanted, valued, and enjoyed. We can look back on our projects and proclaim foolish- ness for trying the impossible: events that don’t correspond to our deadlines, a million missing pictures, or the endless worry that our ideas weren’t being carried out right. But, we all felt we were con- tributing something beneficial to you — the student. The success of our venture can only now be measured. Su Anderson, editor 38 PHOTOGRAPHERS: Ken Dirlam. Flashes of red and white and colorful sounds of music identified the RFHS Band in action this year. Offering various opportuni- ties toward the development of musical skills, the band parti- cipated in such activities as performing at halftime for football and basketball games as well as providing pep music for pep fests. The Friday before Christmas vacation, the band presented an informal concert to the student body and to parents. Then on April 21, the high school band journeyed by bus to Gaylord to perform a spring concert for the students and faculty at Gaylord High School. The RFHS Band brought an exciting agenda of activities to its close on May 3 with the annual Spring Concert held in the school auditorium and open to the public. Band offi- cers for 1970-71 were Janet Brandt, president; Tom Inglis, vice president; Paula Swenson, secretary; and Sandy Shepley. publicity. 58 FRONT ROW: Barb Bloedow, Janet Stramel, Mary Wieland, Su Anderson, Vicki Mariner. This year the highlight of an exciting season arose with the concert they per- formed at the Oakgrove Lutheran Academy of Fargo, North Dakota. Following this experience the group traveled on toward Moorhead, Minnesota, to take in a choir festival at Concordia College. As a song must meet its coda, so the RFHS Choir has encountered its finale only to begin the song of tomorrow anew. 62 Wait a single moment then “turn on” to the music. Why yes — it was just this year that the vocational center became a valuable segment of the fine educational system of Redwood Falls. Located in the downtown Eustice Building, the vocational center offered students on-the-job working experience in the areas of auto mechanics, sales and marketing, as well as training in health occupations. At this opportunity center, students from Red- wood Falls, Belview, Wabasso, Morgan, and Morton con- tributed their time to receive real life experience in learning to cope with and to understand a portion of the world they would encounter tomorrow. S. and 63 other nations, I was told when I first heard about the organization that was going to bring me to this country. That this can become a fact, I know after living for almost a year as a member of an American community. Everything was like a dream which became real. But there was something unusual about this dream: it was more than I expected or even imagined. While learning English in my Brazilian high school I sometimes dis- cussed with teachers, friends, and AFS returnees the pos- sibilities of getting a scholarship. They looked difficult and almost impossible. One of my brothers gave me ad- vice by using a very common expression in our region: “You never know if you don’t try”. I did try and last August I was leaving Rio de Janeiro as one of the 270 AFS’ers from all over the country. Here in Redwood Falls I started living this dream which was becoming reality at the rate of my capacity to understand English, make friends, and fit into my new family. They happened faster than I imagined. Living in this community helped me not only to learn how people of a different culture from mine live, but also how we Brazilians do. If I hadn’t the opportunity to come here and try to do things normally as any other American youngster, I never would be able to find out what is and is not different in both countries. After this year I am able to fully understand what President John F. Kennedy said to a group of AFS students: “I hope that you go from here not merely as a friend but under- standing our faults and our assets .. ” When back in my country I will try to extend this idea to my family and friends. I want to share with them what I received here. Somtimes I found myself in a very difficult situation. This happened when I received the generosity of the peo- ple of Redwood Falls and discovered that I didn't have enough to offer as a response. I looked for words of ap- preciation but all I found was “Thank you”. Maybe you who are reading this Annual were one of those who heard this expression form me. For this, I ask you to understand what I meant even if I am not able to explain it right now. I wanted to say more than the almost me- chanical “Thank you . Something full of sincerity. Now I would like to take your time and talk about the highest point of my stay here. It happened in my every day. It is my new family. If there was something cynical to me about AFS, it was the promise of adjustment to the host family. Fortunately I was wrong. Now if you ask me something about my family, I have to answer with a question: “Which one?”. The Ben Broberg family accepted me in the best way I could wish. As someone who has qualities and faults. As any other member of the family. I am glad they didn’t want me to have special privileges because it helped me understand the way natu- ral things happen to an American family from an inside prospective. I wanted you to know how an exchange student feels but I am afraid what I wrote didn’t help very much. At least I want to tell you that I am going to talk and think a lot about Redwood Falls and its people, and that maybe someday we are going to meet together again. Until then I leave with you my thoughts of love and beliefs in a unit- ed mankind. This is the message from, Domicio Arruda Camara Sobrinho. 102 ABOVE: Domicio Camara, AFS student from Brazil, and his American host family Mr. Ben Broberg, Jim, Tom, Bill, Mrs. Bro berg, and Scott. Farewell “It’s a long, long road from which there is no return it leads us to who knows where” — Yet we must travel on until each of us discovers the answers we seek. The experiences we have under- gone in RFHS have become a segment of our lives, but now we must ask ourselves what lies beyond the stars. There is a tomor- row so with a tear and a smile we close the doors of yesterday behind us. THE CARDINAL staff would like to thank Mr. Ramseth, our principal. Mr. Siewert, our advisor, Mr. Johnson and Mr. Wet- more, our photographers, the businessmen and many others who have helped make this annual possible. In our hearts we will always remember GOODBYE RFHS. Thank You Sponsors The 1971 REDWOOD FALLS HIGH SCHOOL CARDINAL YEARBOOK staff, the advisor, and the school faculty wish to extend a hearty THANK YOU to the fol- lowing merchants, firms, professions, businesses, and individuals who have contribut- financially to the publication of the 1971 CARDINAL YEARBOOK.
