•Vi foreword You would measure time the measureless and the immeasurable. You would adjust your conduct and even direct the course of your spirit according to hours and seasons. Of time you would make a stream upon whose bank you would sit and watch its flowing But if in your thought you must measure time into seasons, let each season encircle all the other seasons. And let today embrace the past with remem- brance and the future with longing. excerpt from THE PROPHET by Kahlil Gibran Contents Faculty 4 Activities 16 Organizations 30 Music 52 Sports 60 Underclassmen 74 Seniors 86 Dedication We, the senior class of 1968. proudly dedicate this Cardinal to our superintendent. The busy weeks of preparation were climaxed when co-captains Dick Nelson and Bob Wetmore crowned Jan Halter as reigning queen for Homecoming 1967. Her attendants were Lynda Gustafson, Karen Knudsen. Courtney Kramer, and Diane Stanton. The charm of an honorary queen. Ruth Kayser. 1967 AFS student, was an added attraction in all the Homecoming activities. Spirits Dampened Defeats Queen Jan accepts her honor. Bob Wetmore sang Sweetheart of Redwood High as the traditional book was passed around for the queen and her court to sign. A hilarious skit was presented displaying homecoming queens of the past. The half-time ceremonies at the game were enhanced by the percision marching and pep music of the RFHS band. Although the Cardinals lost the game 25-7. their fierce playing gave our opponent a rough time. The Homecoming dance had a new twist this year with the theme Psychedelia.” with music provided by the Rare Faction.” 19 OUEEN HOPEFULS: FIRST ROW: Kay Hennes. Liz Laughlin, Linda Gustafson. The sophisticated Harriet is planning to take Margaret's husband away from her. Margaret is scheming to have John paint Harriet’s portrait, because he is a failure as a painter and needs money badly. Maggie and Hetty are inner selves that portray what Margaret and Harriet are real- ly like. The outer selves put on comical and witty fronts to try to deceive each other. You can see a lot of things in a bright green park en- chanted with the magic of spring — especially if you live in an apartment overlooking the park. Mrs. Moore makes it her business to see such things. With her common ways and deep sincerity, she turns Betty and Harry's quarrel into just a little spat! In the Twelve Pound Look by J. M. Barrie, Lady Sims, the young wife of a very successful man about to be made a knight, tires of her existence and learns some- thing of the joy of labor from a typist who comes to do the necessary clerical work for the occasion. The typist happens to be Kate, the former wife of Harry Sims, and comical happenings take place as these two renew their respective pasts. 23 SECRETARY DORTHEA Juul and Superintendent Dale Kempfert check up on school board funds. Stalwarts R KEN STEVENS AND Pat Bestick demonstrate proper bak ing techniques. Student Government Day was slightly different this year. The principal, superintendent, and school board were elect- ed after the usual vigorous campaign; whereas, teachers, secretaries, nurses, librarians, cooks and janitors were cho- sen by the school board after submitting a written applica- tion. Some teachers taught for the entire day. while others taught for only a few hours. Heading the Stalwart platform were Superintendent Dale Kempfert and Principal Steve Diehl. The day began with a flag raising ceremony and speeches by the superintendent and principal. Five minutes between classes and a length- ened lunch hour added extra touches, otherwise, the day went much as normal. This year's student government day gave students not only a chance to exhibit teaching abilities, but also the oppor- tunity to experience the jobs teachers, administrators and other personnel perform daily. 24 BUSY AT WORK ARE cooks Karen Knudsen. The Juniors voted to have the local Traveler's Club serve as chauffeurs for the eve- ning as they have for the past three years. With an air of elegance the doormen awaited the cou- ples in ties and tails. The Grand March began at 8:00 and was led by Junior Class President Mary Kay Waugh and her escort Tom Klabunde. The Dave Whit- beck Quartet provided the music for the evening's dancing. A special touch was added by the sophomore waiters who came attired as Negro salves. They served punch and a buffet luncheon during the evening. After a quick change from formal wear to casual dress, the couples were taken to the Falls Theater where they saw Gambit.” Following the movie there was a dance and then break- fast at the VFW Hall. By 5:00 thecouples had been taken home-, exhausted, but with happy and fun Filled memories of an exciting evening. 26 Kathy Otto and Doug Johnson are interviewed over KLGR. Senior Day '68, one of the final social gatherings of the class, began much like any other school day. Second hour, one of the highlights of the festivities took place when some of the seniors displayed their multiple talents at a variety show. This con- sisted of skits, imitations, solos, rock music, and various humorous awards presented to outstand- ing seniors. The class was then treated to a special luncheon in the cafeteria followed by two movies at the Falls Theater. The big day was completed by dining at the Valley Steak House. This day, one of the first of its kind, was immensely enjoyed by the entire class and could only be de- scribed as being the grooviest!” 28 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY: FRONT ROW Sonya Wittwer. Earlier this summer annual editors attended a one week yearbook workshop at South Dakota State University in Brookings. Here, as at a later clinic held at Gustavus Adolphus College, they learned yearbook tactics and business procedures. Staff members broke advertising sales records with the addition of a new half page $50 ad. and this year was the advent of a new yearbook sales ven- ture. After the close of a thundering advertising and yearbook sales campaign, editors continued with much endurance to meet their deadlines, conduct their monthly meetings, and make the '68 CARDI- NAL a storehouse of age-long memories. 32 SENIORS LEFT TO RIGHT: Karen Knudsen. Performances during the halftimes of football and basketball games were also part of their duties. Four more pom pon girls joined the troop this year making t he number an even ten. During t he fall and winter they also performed at halftimes, swinging their red and white pom-pons and add- ing a flash to the band and the games. Responsibilitiy to rouse school spirit and cheer the team onto victory lies with the cheerleaders. It is their duty to mold the student body into one team to support our athletes. Cattguage Clubs Most Advisor Mr. Russell chats with Spanish Club Officers who are left to right: Suzi Sinner. Secretary; Carol Stramel. President, and Steve Laughlin. Treasurer. Activity planning dominated the Spanish Club scene this year. Meeting once or twice a month, the club began planning another tour of Mexico for next year. The social highlight of the year was the Inter- national Christmas Party. Attired in native garb, the Spanish Club contributed the traditional pinata and much of the deli- cious food. At their meetings, the members also lis- tened to Spanish music, held songfests. played games, and viewed slides from their previous trip to Mexico. 38 Besides learning how to speak and understand the Latin language, the Latin Club delved into the history and culture of the early Romans. They followed some of the Roman customs at the initiation of the first-year members. Club members also became more familiar with the definitions of many English words derived from Latin. Like all other school organizations. Latin Club was in charge of a concession and also put on the Sweetheart Dance in February. Numerous bake sales, sponsoring a movie, and a spaghet- ti dinner put on by the first-year students, were the money making projects that earned club members a trip to the Guthrie Theater. Shew Steady Jmprouenmt Under the leadership of new head coach James Lasley. the 1967-68 cagers ended their season with zest. Although the season record only showed 6 wins, the team should be giv- en a lot of credit for their marked improvement. The Luverne. Marshall, and Springfield games were the ones to be remembered. Luverne, the Southwest Confer- ence champs, beat the Cards by only five points. They also played a tremendous game against the Marshall Tigers who beat us by only two free throws in the final seconds. A 55- 50 victory over Springfield finished the regular season. In the tournament our hoopsters rolled over Morgan 66-57. Playing one of their greatest games of the season, the Cards lost a heart-breaker to the New Ulm Eagles 59-54. Thus ended an exciting and satisfying season. The A-squad finished the season with a 3-10 record, quite an improvement over last year's 1-12 record. The Cardinals were District 10 Champs with a score of 99 to Fairfax's 86 and New Ulm's third place. Three of our boys, Mark Bestick (second year). Jerry Woefel (first year). Steve Zimmer (third year) placed first while Don Nolting and Mike Milbradt were runners up. Mark Bestick and Jerry Woefel placed third in region com pet it ion. Though Redwood Falls was not fortunate enough to have any repre- sentatives in the state meet, this year, the boys excelled tremendously both individually and as a team for a most satisfying season in the history of RFHS. Senior Bob Wetmore, halfback, and junior Lee Patten, quarterback, were the Cardinal offen- sive leaders; however, the team could never muster up enough muscle needed for t hose critical moments. The best game of the year was with the Win- dom Eagles. The Cards managed to score six touchdowns against the excellent defense of the Eagles. In spite of the poor season, each game brought a victory through the growth of team sports- manship and cooperation. A-TEAM: FRONT ROW: Head Coach Bob Thompson. Lee Patten. Dan Hardy. Ivar kaardal. Student from Bremen. Germany. ‘Joining Hands Across the Sea Many people think it must be difficult for a young student to be for one year many thousand miles away from home. This might be true, but it wasn't in my case. I felt at home immediately in Redwood Falls and spent here the most wonderful year I have ever had. My family. Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Knud- sen. Karen and John, gave me the feeling as if I had always belonged to them. I give all my thanks to them and also to many others. Redwood Falls is a lovely community with many nice people. Among the students, especially the seniors, I found many friends. I'll never forget the excitement of home- coming when the seniors surprised and honored me by voting me as an attendant. But it is not only homecoming that I’ll remember. Nearly every day brought something wonderful. There are all the football games, wrestling matches, and basketball games which were very new for me. I got most ex- cited and learned one thing very soon, which we don't have in Germany, and that is cheering. With a sister who is a cheerleading captain. I had better support her! Knowing my wonderful year would go fast. I seemed to live twice as intensively as people do normally. During my year here, I had to learn many new things and had many new experiences which will stay forever in my memories. But. although there are differences between the United States and Ger- many, I learned one thing which is very important and which I want everybody to believe. That is that people themselves are alike all over the world. A.F.S. gave me the opportunity not only to learn about American people, but also students from about 60 different countries. All these students have different customs, but their human feelings are the same. It is so wonderful to recognize that we people are all alike although we have different skin colors and come from different continents. After this wonderful year, I have to leave my Ameri- can family and all my friends. My great hope is that I can come back soon to see everybody again. I also hope that some have the opportunity to visit me in Bremen. Germany. I’m waiting and will be pleased to welcome you. Ruth Kayser 88 STUDENT ROTARIANS: FRONT ROW: Jeff Evenson. Dawn Tollef son. Before we go on, we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you and farewell to all who have made the 1968 CARDI- NAL a reality: Mr. Ramseth and the entire administration, the faculty and coaching staff, and our advisor. Mr. Siewert. We extend our regards and best wishes to our AFS student. Ruth Kayser. who has been a good friend to all and the finest of ambassadors.
