The Senior Class Of Redwood Falls High School presents THE 1967 CARDINAL Co-Editors..........Jeannette Balko Linda Klabunde Business Manager.........Jim Larson Advisor............Mr. O.E. Siewert Foreword Many graduates have walked through these portals of learning. Surely they experienced happiness mixed with sadness, such as we the grads of 1967 — sadness because of the many fond memories we must leave forever behind. It is sad to have to say good-bye, for Redwood Falls High School is a place one does not like to attend, but hates to leave. As we turn the pages of this book in future years, we will remember those friends we held so dear. We will remember the fun we shared during the years at school dances, games and in classes. We will often stop and recall some of the dedicated teachers who helped us along the way — the extra help they offered us when the going got rough. We will remember the relaxed attitude of genuine friendliness that existed between the students and teachers. Now journey through the pages and share the joys of our accomplishments and the sorrows of our defeats, for these are the events we will cherish over the years. 2 Table Of Contents Faculty and Administration 4 Activities 16 Organizations 30 Sports 60 Underclassmen 74 Seniors 86 1967 Cardinal Staff Brad Berberick Leigh Cherry Martha Doms Cathy Dwyer Kathy Flinn Julie Galles Christine Hansvick Don Jorgenson Bill Moldestad Susan Moldestad Barb Patten Tom Tiffany 3 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION REEDE GRAY: Carleton College (B.A.), University of Minne- MURIEL ANDERSON: Secretary to the Superin- sota (M.A.). For thirty years, Mr. Gray, with the help of the Board of Education, has skillfully directed and improved our school system. The Board of Education is the “voice of the people.” The usual members, who are elected for three year terms, strive to maintain a stable efficient operation. Our principals, Mr. Ramseth and Mr. Halverson, have given great time and effort to provide RFHS students and faculty with an efficient, smooth-running school. A few of their many tasks consist of setting up schedules, supervising the administration of the school, and providing us with a constantly improving school system. Our smiling secretaries, in the office, are Miss Anderson and Mrs. Herbert. Miss Anderson is Mr. Gray’s secretary, and Mrs. Herbert is Mr. Ramseth’s. We cannot put into words how deeply grateful we are to these public-spirited citizens for their dedication and service. 7 GEROGE P RAMSETH: St. Olaf College (B.A.), University of Minnesota (M.A.) Princi- pal of Senior High School; Cafeteria and School Transportation. The Student Council was engaged in many activities under the leadership of President Tom Tiffany and the supervision of Mr. Merrill Pederson. Some of these activities included Parent’s Night during football; Mom’s Night during basket- ball; Dad’s Night during wrestling; Homecoming, the biggest single activity of the Student Council; the popcorn machine, the main source of income; AFS Day and the Student Hand- book, which is put out to enable the student to recognize his privileges and obligations as a student of RFHS. The Student Council consists of five Seniors, four Juniors, and three Sophomores as voting members, as well as the AFS student and the Senior High class presidents. Last fall, five members attended the Student Council Con- vention at Walnut Grove, where Redwood Falls High School was elected Treasurer of the Conference. The purposes of Student Council are to enable pupils to voice their opinions as to the control of extracurricular ac- tivities, to develop leadership through responsibility, to promote student interest and participation in school govern- ment, and to develop in the student the appreciation of the privilege of participating in democracy on a small scale. Queen Cathy Of The House Of Dwyer The crowning moment for Queen Cathy. The climax of Homecoming week occurred, of course, at cor- onation. Tension mounted as last year’s queen, Joyce Woelfel, placed the crown and robe on the 1966 Homecoming queen, Cathy Dwyer. Mike Pedersen sang “Sweetheart of Redwood High” during the signing of the book. A hilarious skit on the evolution of Homecomings, presented by Tom TifTany and Brad Berberick, added a light touch to the solemn occasion. The alumni “56” were introduced and the cheerleaders aroused the spirit of the students in a short pep-fest. Queen Cathy, escorted by Dennis Dirlam, led the way out of the auditorium. The students then went out to watch the Home- coming Parade. Many new units had been added with such clubs as FFA, German, and Latin participating. After the parade everyone went home to recuperate for the game with the Tro- jans of Worthington. 19 TOP SIXTEEN: FRONT ROW: Kathy Wittwer, Judy Bloc- Dwyer, Barb Patten, Ann Hougham, Julie Galles, Leigh Cherry, dow, Peggy Morrow. All the classes partici- pated with other clubs providing the extra units. The parade followed the coronation cer- emonies. It was lead by Queen Cathy and her attendants on the senior float. The eighth grade float placed first with “Tro- jans of Troy are Cardinals’ Toy.” The sophomore float placed second with the slogan “Build a Wall and Watch’em Fall.” The FFA float and the German float tied for third place. Both bands provided the music for the parade. Queen Cathy graciously accepted and ex- pressed her thanks at being chosen 1966 Homecoming Queen. She very warmly invited the “56” alumni, parents, faculty, and students to the game with Worthington. Thursday’s activities included the annual girls’ football game which incidently the Jun- iors won. Also the bonfire was held with the candidates introduced, the co-captains and coach, and players presented. The night of the game was chilly but the loy- al fans and alumni braved the weather to see the team lose to Worthington by a score of 20- 6. After the game the dance was held with Roger Kodet and the Cards providing the mu- sic. It was a very successful Homecoming. Queen Cathy accepting her honor as the 1966 Homecoming Queen. There was at times, a lack of communication between the players on stage. This re- presented the lack of communication in life, such as in world affairs. The main purpose of the play of this kind was to make you think. After being presented on November 18-19 in the Juniors’ “An Evening of Entertainment”, “The Room” was sent on to Dis- trict competition. Here it received an “A” rating and was cho- sen to represent District 10 at the Regional contest. The Re- gional was held at Hutchinson. The cast came home with a “B” rating. Everyone who worked on the plays deserved a hand for doing such a fine job and making it such a success. 22 “Sunday Costs Five Pesos” is a play about the old Mexican custom that any fight started on Sunday would cost the person five pesos. Since this was a great sum of money to the poor people of Mexico, few fights were started. But in some situations it was entirely impossible especially if a girl and a boy were concerned as was the case in this play. Fidel was paying too much attention to one Celesti- na. Berta, Fidel’s girlfriend, became very angry. This, of course, was hard to keep away from prying neigh- bors especially if they were Salome and Tonia. These two tried to get the two lovers back together and suc- ceeded in doing everything but that. Finally Berta and Fidel did get together and were married and went to live in another town. “Sunday Costs Five Pesos” along with “She Was Only A Farmer’s Daughter” were presented Friday morning, November 18, to the Junior High. Senior High students wanting to see the four plays had to at- tend the evening performances. Salome defeated! It tried to show that hell is people themselves. Because the play was about a coward, a Lesbian, and a nymphomaniac, it was not presented the second night as there was strong public disapproval. This scene depicts the Valet (Jody Nor- cutt) informing Estelle (Susan Valle) and Inez (Kathe Wilcoxon) that they must stay in hell forever. The play is an old- fashioned “mellerdram- mer” complete with hero, villain, cape and mous- tache. We were invited to participate in the play by hissing when the villain entered and cheering the hero when he entered. It was enjoyed as much by the viewers as the actors. 24 Students Take Over It all began on Monday and Tuesday, May 1 and 2, with the filing for various offices. Wild, but delightful posters lined the halls, ceilings, and classrooms, tempt- ing those who walked by. Thursday the students flocked to the polls and by seventh hour we knew who our leaders for the coming day would be. Friday dawned bright and early for some of those elected. Cooks and janitors were on the job by 7 a.m., ready, willing, and eager to fulfill their obligations — and campaign promises. Eight o’clock found principal Mike Schoffman, superintendent Kevin O’Leary and their secretaries Wen- dy Bollum and Kathy Flinn hard at work in their offices. Noon time entertainment was furnished by the Sophisticates, a local group. By the time the final bell rang at 3: 30, all those fortunate to be elected were ready to turn the business of education back to those trained for that purpose. We students had had our day and were glad to rejoin the ranks of teens. Principal Mike signs a pass for two jun- iors. Secretary to the principal, Wendy Bollum. keeps us up-to-date. Everyone who saw the Senior Class’s presentation of the comedy Arsenic and Old Lace on May 5 and 6 knows the answer to that. No!! Wendy Bollum and Martha Dorns played the parts of Abby Brewster and Martha Brewster, the little old ladies whose greatest contribution to life was poisoning lonely old men by the use of ar- senic added to elderberry wine. Teddy Brewster, played by Dennis Dirlam, thought he was Teddy Roosevelt, and the audience was often startled by his unex- pected “Charge!” The person who paced the play was Brad Berberick (Mortimer Brewster) with his “My gosh, here's an- other one,” when he discovered the body of Mr. Spenalzo after finally getting rid of Mr. Hoskins, one of Abby and Martha’s gentlemen. Jonathan Brewster (Jim Lar- son) and Dr. Einstein (Steve Sinner) were partners in crime in the play and nearly killed Elaine Harper (Ann Hougham), the daughter of Rev. Harper, played by Kevin O’Leary. With the help of Mr. Schenk, our direc- tor, the play was a lot of fun and a great success. FRONT ROW: Diane Svoboda. Barb Patten. Susan Valle. Mary Ann Chal- mers. The RFHS gym was transformed into the “Hanging Gardens of Babylon” for the 1967 Junior-Senior Prom. Once again the Juniors voted to have the local Trave- lers’ Club serve as chauffeurs for the evening, providing added sophistication in ties and tails as doormen. The Grand March began promptly at 8:00 led by the Junior Class President Diane Stanton and her escort Dean Christensen. The Twilighters from New Ulm provided the music for the evening. Sophomore waiters and waitresses carried out the Roman theme dressed in togas. Marble columns, vine-covered walls and a fish pond helped to carry out the theme. As the dance drew to a close, chauffeurs awaited the elegant couples and took them hpme to change for the rest of the night. The Grand March was a big success with over 100 couples parti cipating. Sweet Dreams And Pleasant Memories Under the eye of scrutiny, Brenda Mahoney and her escort David Okins approached the entrance. 28 Arriving at the scene of the Prom. Dennis Dirlam and his date Rosa Lopez. AFSer from Madrid, stopped under the canopy to have their pictures taken and to talk with KLGR. As the lions looked on, the Grand March was lead by Junior Class President Diane Stanton and her escort Dean Christensen and Senior Class President Charles Curtis and his date Kathy Flinn. The Pond of Babylon fascinated all with its floating flowers and various colored gold- fish. “In Like Flint” was shown in the theatre uptown following the dance. All made use of the privilege to have a drink or candy bar free of charge. Following the show, there was a dance at the VFW Hall. There were a lot of laughs during the grapefruit- passing game. After the games, re- cords were provided and played by KLGR and the dancing began. At 4:30 the weary chauffeurs met the couples and took them to the Le- gion Hall for breakfast which consist- ed of scrambled eggs, hot cocoa, and a roll. This was the climax of the even- ing. All agreed that the Travelers’ Club and the Junior Class had provided an evening filled with fun for all. The sleepy students seemed well satisfied as the evening events faded into sweet dreams and pleasant memories. SENIORS: Bill Moldestad, Brad Berberick, Kathy Flinn, Barb Patten. The year of the 1967 CARDINAL got underway with the selling of ads by the twenty-five member staff . Our new goal was for each member to sell $50 worth of ads. A new ad consisting of a 3” by 6” picture was sold for $25. Our accomplishments really pleased Mr. Siewert, our advisor, and business manager Jim Larson. Juniors on the staff served as ap- prentices to the Seniors and were able to increase their knowledge of year- book production for their coming important year. Intently, they wrote copy and assisted the seniors in all possible ways. 32 SENIORS: Don Jorgenson, Martha Doms, Julie Galles. Cathy Dwyer, Leigh Cherry, Tom Tiffany. Here they received hints on preparing and producing a good yearbook. The frantic preparation of taking pictures, plan- ning layouts, selling ads and yearbooks, writing copy and typing layouts kept the editors, business manager and the staff working hard. Preparing articles, summarizing sports events, and introducing news are a few of the trials that are begun on Monday morning by the writing staff. Their work continues until Wednesday when the production and mimeo staff take over. Editors are deep in thought checking articles and preparing them for the typists. The art department busies itself with thinking up clever titles and making attractive, eye-catching headlines. As the work often extends late into the night, the first-class ROUSER staffis not content until Friday afternoon, when students rush to the main corridor to secure their weekly news. A well- deserved rest follows until next Monday, when assign- ments are handed out. This year, under the attention of their new advisor, Mr. Michael Sponberg, the ROUSER continued to strive foreward with its new ideas and succeeded in keeping its first-class rating. MAJORETTES: Where The Action Is At all sports events our cheerleaders can be found enthusiastically backing the team. Although the main purpose of the cheerleaders is to arouse the spirit of the fans, they are excellent representatives of our school. They encourage good sports- manship and promote friendly relation- ships between our school and its rivals. The cheerleaders attend various clinics and practice regularly in order to improve their skills. In addition to the A and “B squads, there are also seventh, eighth, and ninth grade cheerleaders, who are chosen in much the same manner as the older girls. Our school attributes its fine spirit to all of these girls. Adding a sparkle to the RFHS march- ing band are the majorettes. Clad in red velvet uniforms, these girls led and enter- tained with the band. Long, hard hours of practicing have helped them add a bright highlight to our football games and pa- rades. Swinging red and white pom-pons, the six RFHS pom-pon girls entertained with the majorettes during the year. These girls, who also perform as flag twirlers during football season, made our basketball games and pep fests much more enjoyable. Mary Lou Zschunke. Susan Valle. Debbie Carruth. At these meetings are programs fea- turing movies, slides or plays. An international Christ- mas party was also put on by these groups. Rosa Maria Lopez, our AFS student from Spain, spoke about her homeland. A Mexican holiday was enjoyed by seventeen Span- ish club members during Christmas vacation. Accom- panied by seven faculty members, they saw Mexico City, Taxco - the silver capital of the world, a leather factory, and the world renowned Folklorico Ballet. At the District contest held at New Ulm on April 8, Jim Larson and Mary Jo Orth were our only winners. Mary Jo became the alternate to the state contest at Springfield April 13 for storytelling. k ORIGINAL: Mary Chalmers and Rosa Lopez. There were actual battles for the balls as volleyball and basketball teams vied for top spot in the standings. Wednesdays saw the Hi-Way Lanes invaded by enthusiatic bowlers. A playday at Mankato State College and a mid-winter swim at St. James were also included in their yearly activities. A picnic in Ramsey park brought the year to a successful close. The Winners! Under the supervision of Mr. Clem Stramel, captains Mark Vien. Steve Sinner, Mike So- renson, and Bill Moldestad led their teams through the ten week schedule. Activities included a basketball and three volley ball games at each session. Moldestad's team emerged victorious in both basket- ball and volley ball action during the regular season. It’s About Time The RFHS Senior Band can add one more to its list of successful sea- sons. Under the direction of Mr. Zschunke, the band performed at football games in the fall and basket- ball and wrestling matches later on in the season. The Flag Twirlers and Pom-Pon Girls added zest and interest to the games with their lively routines performed at half-time. In addition to its annual trip to Band Day at the University of Minne- sota, the band gave a solo and ensem- ble recital in November to which the public was invited. The band was host for the District Music Festival this year. Enthusiasm was high and everyone worked hard to make it a success. The Spring Concert was considered to be one of the band's best, and the Dance Band topped ofT the year by playing at the Pops Concert. Congratulations, band members, on another successful season! Gridiron Woes Robin Norcult turns the corner. With only ten seniors reporting for practice, and four of them with no experience, the 1966 Cardinal grid team seemed to be headed for another tough season. The season was tough, and the Cards played the final game with three veterans out of uniform. What happened in between is a credit to a spirited team. This team proved to be one of the most exciting teams in Cardinal history. In the first game of the season, the Cards came back with two second-half scores to tie Tracy 13-13. But that was only a start! St. James was next on the schedule and the RFHS gridders came from behind with three touchdowns in the second half to beat the Saints 27-14. Next the Cards opened their Southwest Conference season with a 20-20 tie with Pipestone. You guessed it! One touchdown came with six seconds in the first half and the tying tally came as the gun sounded! But here the troubles began. First Kevin O’Leary, one of the co-captains, was injured and missed a few games. Then defen- sive standout Ken Beran severely sprained his ankle and was out for the season. What now? Well, senior co-captain and all-a- round standout Bill Boots broke his thumb. Robin Norcutt, the Cards’ leading tackier and driving fullback missed the final game due to a leg infection. These problems and setbacks were evident as the Cards failed to win another game, or even tie one! They finished the season with a 1-6-2 record. The season was tough, but this team never quit for a second. 62 FRONT ROW Jim Enabnit. Kevin O'- Leary. Robin Nor- cuit. Bill Bools. Ri- chard Wegner, Charles Curtis. SECOND ROW: Steve Zimmer. Brad Berberick watches for trouble. Charlie Curtis plays it tough. When a team loses seventeen of nineteen games, there remains little to be said. One would expect the players to have that “I don't care attitude, and to have long ago resigned themselves to losing. And no one could really blame them. But as a compliment to the 1966-'67 team, anyone could see that this team never quit. Many were the times they came from behind only to fall back, and then rally once more. Their spirit and desire be- lied their record, and the final game of the season was a true tribute to their gallant efforts. The Cardinals drew Morgan for their first-round opponent in the district, a team with a 15-2 record. Morgan's Raiders were favored by as much as thirty points, but our Cards had some opinions of their own. They played like they were undefeated, and led after the first quarter by a score of nine to eight. That lead was indicative of the entire game, as the highly-rated Raiders failed to pull away as was expected. Indeed, the Cards were ahead, and it took a last-second basket to rescue the game for Morgan. Without a doubt, it is true. It is hard to find words for a team like this. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions Along with the basketballers, the Card wrestling team suf- fered its losingest season in history. The Cardinals went 0-7 in the tough Southwest Conference and just escaped a winless sea- son by eking out a victory over New Ulm, the 20th in a row over the Eagles. Plagued by injuries all season, the team suffered a serious loss when Captain Bill Boots was injured in the Luverne match. Bill sat out the rest of the season, but was ready for the district tour- nament. At the SW Conference tournament at Marshall, RF again came out on the short end of the scoring. The bright spot was Mark Bestick, who copped the 95 pound championship. In addi- tion, Robin Norcutt placed 2nd at 145 pounds, and Gerry Koll surprised everyone by taking 4th in heavyweight. Two weeks later a new season began at Gaylord — the dis- trict tournament. On the basis of their season record, few people mentioned the Cards as possibilities for anything. But our men showed what determination could do. Everyone gave their all and RFHS ended up 3rd in the district, one notch above 1966 champion Gaylord. In fact Redwood had more individual champions than any other team — four: Mark Bestick at 95, Don Nolting at 112, Robin Norcutt at 154, and Bill Boots at 175. Also, Dick Nelson was second at 165. In the Region Three meet, Bestick, Nolting, and Nelson lost their first matches. In the second round Robin Norcutt was de- cisioned by the eventual runnerup. Bill Boots pinned a Hector wrestler to gain the finals. In the consolation round Robin took third place honors and Don was fourth at 112. Bill pinned his championship opponent in 1:36 and the RFHS fans went wild. At the State tournament. Bill won his first match, and then lost his second, thus ending a great high school career. The Cardinal cross-country team of 1966 gave their new coach, Mr. Brandt, very few bright moments. One of these, however, was that the leading runner. Dale Kempfert, was only a junior. Throughout the regular season the Cardinal marathon runners failed to win a meet and scored poorly in most. In the Conference meet the Cards finished a distant sixth out of seven teams. In the region meet held at Appleton, the best harrier for Redwood was David Okins, a senior who placed thirty-fifth. The 1966 cross-country squad was similar to the courses over which it ran — green. The team showed only one senior, David Okins. The only way open to travel is up. A young team has a future, and if the future is a reflec- tion of the spirit and desire of the boys in- volved, then the future of the cross-country team of 1966 is certainly bright. With only two seniors on this year's track team. Coach Don Otterson had some doubts about a winning season. The Cardinals had other ideas, though. With most of their point-winners from last year's District 10 runner-up team back this year, the Cards had the nucleus for a successful team. Bob Wetmore, Charlie Curtis, and Steve and Phil Jones were consistent winners throughout the season. As usual, the Cards had a strong 880-yard relay team. As a result, they placed high in the meets in which they were entered. Even though this track team was composed almost entirely of underclassmen, they were determined and surprised a few people with their successful season. 69 TENNIS TEAM: LEFT TO RIGHT: Herb Viergutz. For the second year in a row, track star Bob Wet- more qualified for state competition. 71 Rich Wegner slides in for a big one. Redwood Falls High school will never come closer to winning the district 10 baseball champion- ship — and not doing it — than they did here in Redwood Falls June 1, 1967. This was the situation in the bottom of the seventh inning in the tournament title game with New Ulm: The Eagles were leading 3-2 but the Cardinals had the bases loaded with nobody out and their three-four-five hitters coming to bat. New Ulm wound up winning 5-3 in eight innings and qualified for the region III tournament for the second straight year, and for the third time in the last four. The Cardinals completed their season with a 13- 7 won-lost record and their strongest district bid since the RFHS championship year of 1951. Under the direction of Mr. Scholl, and officers Jim Larson, Dennis Dirlam, Bill Boots, and Kathy Flinn, the RFHS Letter- men’s Club had a successful year. Unlike other clubs, boys must have lettered in a sport at least one year to be eligible to join. “A” squad cheerleaders are also members. Lettermen wear the large red “R” on either jackets or white sweaters to show mem- bership. Mr. Scholl and president Jim Larson led the club in planning the annual Lettermen’s Carnival. Students viewed the Variety Show in the afternoon which contained everything from vocal groups to riotous face-washings with shaving cream. The Car- nival itself began about 6:00 and ended around 10:00. All-in-all it was a huge success. Another activity of the club is the selecting of the Outstand- ing Athlete of 1966-67. Bill Boots was chosen to receive this honor. He was also awarded a $50 scholarship presented this year for the first time by the Lettermen’s Club. UNDERCLASSMEN The first day in seventh grade was one of the most important days in our lives. We had the thrill of getting lost in all the confusion. Final- ly we had taken the long awaited step into the busy and challenging world of Junior High. Homecoming was soon upon us and we were eager to accept the invitation to be a part of it. It seemed so much bigger and better than it had in grade school. Since all work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy, we decided to add a little spice to our life. In November we attended the Junior High Party and got to know our predecessors a little better. Spring came and with it our own party. After a great year of meeting new friends, joining various extracurricular activities, and trying to organize our study habits, we were anxious to enter the horizons of eighth grade. A Step Up As we superiorly watched the seventh graders rush through the halls, we were secretly thankful we had made it through our seventh grade so well. This year our studies became much more impor- tant to us, but there was still plenty of time for ex- tra activities. Our boys played football, basketball, and baseball with dreams of bringing glory to our school in future years. Homecoming, the Junior High Party, and our own Eighth Grade Party were the social highlights of the busy year. We now look forward to our next goal - the wearing of the treasured green as Freshmen of RFHS. Being the oldest class of the Junior High, we set our standards at the beginning of the year to give the underclassmen a good example. Supplying the dummy for Homecoming was one of our many new responsibilities. Al- though Freshman tests were very hard to en- dure, they were an excellent example of our scholastic abilities. We also participated in Junior High Band, Freshman Choir, and ath- letics. Freshman Day of 1967 was the climax of our year. It was one of the best ever; as was the junior high party, which we also attended. Through the completion of these activities, we have shown that we deserve to be members of the senior high. However, we will never forget our wonderful Freshman year. 80 FRONT ROW Wayne Kempfert. Dan Hardy. David Jones. Jim Roswell. Linda Leadholm. Claudia Rote. Pat Keech. SECOND ROW Paula Patten. In Numbers SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS: Alycen Bloedow, Secretary; Anne Mummert, Treasurer; Nancy Dwyer. Vice-President; Ron Morrow, President. The first days of high school were pretty hec- tic, but soon we diligently settled down to our sophomore year. Being the largest class and one with many leaders, we were bound and determined to be the best. This year, as sophomores, we bridged the gulf from junior to senior high. We studied industriously and found we had many added responsibilities. We were able to join senior band, choir, ROUSER, language clubs, and participate in One Act Plays. The boys partici- pated in every sport. Our job at Homecoming was the care of homecoming pins. We ordered a different type of pin that could be worn all year instead of just two weeks before home- coming. Striving to make our presence known, we worked hard at our responsibilities to attain our goals and began to prepare ourselves for the future. 83 Our junior year kept us pretty busy preparing for our senior year, when we would become the leaders ofRFHS. This year we were able to take a more active part in Homecoming, being designated to many activi- ties. The dance was our main project, however, and it was a huge success. We really enjoyed putting on the One-Act Play Festival in November. Other ex- tra curricular activities, such asROUSERand CARDINAL, kept us hopping. What we had been waiting for finally arrived working together to plan and put on the Junior-Senior Spring Dance. As the year drew to a close we began looking forward to our senior year with anticipation and enthusiasm. Excitement mounted when we chose our class rings. We hope that the senior class of 1968 will be the very best. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Diane Boushek, Secretary; Diane Stanton. President. Dawn Tollefson, Treasurer; Tom Weltsch. An impossible dream for me was to come to the United States. Then, things began to happen. My brother knew of the AFS program and won a scholarship to go to California. My impossible dream was not so impossible. One Spanish hot afternoon of the 13th of July I received a telephone call telling me the good news. I have received one scholarship to go to Redwood Falls, Minnesota. The 7th of August 800 kids from all over Europe embarked in the “Seven Seas” and left Rotterdam, Holland. On August 19th, after two days of bus trip, I arrived in the fair town of Redwood Falls where I will spend the best year of my life. One year full of excitement, new things, snow, lively and friendly people. I found many things in common. The most important of all is that young people as well as old people are all alike everywhere in the world. When I came here I did not feel at all homesick or in a foreign country. I just had a feeling of homecoming and that is because of the people and their friendliness. I have lived here with a lively and wonderful family, Mr. and Mrs. S.R. Klabunde and Linda and Mary Jo. I cannot consider them anything than my own parents and my own family. Now when I think in all my experience here I believe that there is not such a truthful sentence like the beautiful motto of AFS: “Walk together, talk together, O ye people of the earth: Then and only then shall ye have peace.” 88 Tom Tiffany. A FS sludem to the Philippines. Tom and Philippine friends. “Mabuhay!”: A Philippine Hello Magandang Fili pinas! In Tagalog these two words mean “Beautiful Philippines. Last summer I was fortunate enough to be an AFS’er to this group of 7000 islands in the Pacific. I lived with the Mariano Mendoza family in San Miguel. Buacan, located in the Rice Bowl of Central Luzon, also noted for the activities of Communist insurgents, the Huks. Living in a new culture, eating new food, learning new language, and making new friends was a profound learning experience. I had many great experiences during my summer, some of which included meeting President Marcos, meeting all the Viet- namese, Laotian. Malaysian, and Filipino AFS’ers to the U.S., experiencing a volcanic eruption and earthquake, becoming a cadet captain in my school’s Preparatory Military Training class, and being a member of the greatest bunch of kids in AFS history. But while all these were rewarding, there were more lasting gains from the summer in the areas of: 1) Personal devel- opment, 2) Recognition of the values of adaptability, 3)Appre- ciation of problems and promise of Asia. I learned the value of a smile, and more important, I learned the value of people. Adaptability is a great asset for anyone to have, and I am glad I learned it. Asia is the focus of the world today and of the future. I was indeed lucky to go to Asia as an AFS’er, but “I shall return.” Tom. cadet captain in Preparatory Military Training. 89 MAYNARD AHRENS: Intramur- al 1,3,4; Boys’ County 3; Tennis 4. Frosting On The Cake HONOR STUDENTS Robert Anderson Charles Curtis Martha Dorns Julie Galles 104 Christine Hansvick William Moldestad Jill Tighc Susan Valle Our final moments together. One chapter of our lives has come to an end. The time has come to close the book and start anew. New experiences, new goals, new hopes and dreams await us. Yet each of us will carry with him the memories of the past year which he holds dear. The time of fun and laughter, joy and sorrow, disappointment and despair can never be forgotten. The knowledge we have gleaned and the experience we have gained have molded and shaped and prepared us for a new chapter in our lives, a new phase of learning and growth. But before we go on, we would like to extend a sincere thank you: To Mr. Siewert, our advisor, who was so patient as we struggled to complete this book. To the teachers, especially the coaches, who let us interrupt the flow of classes and practices to take the much needed pictures. To Mr. Ramseth and Mr. Gray who guided our foot- steps along the way when the going got rough. To Mrs. Herbert and Miss Anderson who were so willing to lend a helping hand. To the students who cooperated during the picture- taking sessions and by buying this book. And to the 1967 CARDINAL staff who put forth every effort to make this the best CARDINAL ever!
