1957 CARDINAL Redwood Falls High School , Redwood Falls, Minnesota COSTAIN STUDIOS - PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR - - ASS'T. EDITORS - - - - KAREN MATLOCK - - CAROLYN SIMONDET SHARON SQUIBB BUSINESS MANAGER - - CARLETON BJERKE ASS'T. BUSINESS MANAGER - - CHARLES REED FACULTY ADVISOR - - - PAUL DRISCOLL 2 FOREWORD One day a hush will fall, the footsteps of us all will echo down the hall and disappear. What busy feet are seen in our corridors! Hundreds of different lives are represented, but all feet are traveling along the same path - the path leading to success and wisdom. In traveling through this 1957 yearbook, one can see that the journey is often happy, as we watch our mighty eleven triumph, or as we dance gaily at a party. The road has its rough spots, too, as we might flunk an exam or perhaps we are faced with personal disappoint- ments, but it is a journey of deep satisfaction. If we stay on the path and continue to its end, we will possess something thal can never lose its value nor can ever be taken from us. As our busy feet go tapping down the corridor, we can but feel sad to think that one day they will no longer be a part of the happy shuffle of Redwood High. Our carefree days of youth will be ended, for we shall be ready to step into the adult world, intelligent and mature. 3 Faculty Administrators Guide Administration The strong hand which is needed to guide our footsteps along the right path is provided by Superintendent Reede Gray and the Board of Education, com- posed of William Schottenbauer, A. G. Seifert, M. A. Ehlers, D. P. Tiffany, Mrs. Harold Niemann, and John Hoepner. Under their leadership the school has maintained consistently high scholastic standards, and provided the students with every possible opportunity for fur- thering their education. Both students and community appreciate greatly the services that these public servants have rendered to tomorrow's citizens. REEDE GRAY: Carleton, B. A.; University of Min- nesota, M. Halvorson. The smooth func- tioning of our school and the efficient adminis- tering is due to their careful planning. Athletic schedules, dances, social events, programs, are but a few of their responsibilities along with maintaining the regular curriculum of our school. Their genuine interest and ready co-operation instill in their students an appreciation of the truly fine administration Redwood High has. 7 MURIEL ANDERSON: Secretary to the Superin- tendent. To make our “seniority” official we re- ceived our class rings early in the fall. Then began our merry senior pace. We eagerly cheered our letterman on in foot- ball, and began our plans for a class trip in the spring. We sponsored concessions and dances and shoveled snow to aid in our endeavor. We supported our wrestlers and sadly watched our last basketball game, knowing that the end of our high school days was coming much too soon . Our class play, our senior trip, selection of announcements, Baccalaureate . . all seemed to go so fast, and now we are about to step out into new experiences. Our feet may travel to other lands but we, the class of 1957, will always leave a bit of our heart in Redwood High. Class Officers Pres. Jay Hornbacher, Vice Pres. Michael Schottenbauer, Sec. This year’s annual represents hard work and sacrifice, but also co-opera- tion, accomplishments, and valuable learn- ing experience. Starting off with no ad- visor, the staff proved itself by carrying on alone until the able direction of Mr. Dris- coll was secured. With pride and a sense of achievement, they present the 1957 Cardinal, the largest ever, to be kept as a “treasure of mem- ories” for years to come. This year brings a few changes to add variety and color to our yearbook. The senior summaries are found in the front and also more attention is being given to our fine athletic department and to the school life section, in an effort to capture the students as you would be most likely to remember them. Rouser The shoes are off, the toes are wiggling in comfort on the desk—it’s first hour Fri- day morning, and the weekly Rouser is out —thus completes a week of hectic work. The Monday noon luncheon meeting of the editors with their advisor, Mrs. Anderson, to plan the week’s Rouser; the composing of articles, the mock-up, placing the typed stories on the page for the final stenciling, and art work; and finally the early 7:30 a. m. clacking of the mimeograph Friday mor- ning as the Rousers are run off, leaving only the actual passing out— all these are characteristics of an average week in Rouser production. Though the week contains many dead- lines, it is much easier on the staff com- pared to last year’s monthly hectic week. There are still problems though—the end- less late assignment, the rude awakening to the fact there are too many letters in a line, the disastrous ripping of a stencil by the tempermental mimeograph. But with all the hurry, scurry, and much worry of getting the RFHS news into print, the Rouser production provides much fun and a sense of accomplishment for its staff. Eighty musicians attired in white shoes, socks, shirts, black ties and smart red and gray uniforms comprised the largest musical organi- zation, our marching and concert band. This was the first year bandsmen played under the direction of John Berg. The band accepted an invitation to partici- pate in the Band Day activities at the U. of M. — Northwestern footbail game last fall. Besides providing a very colorful and enter- taining spectacle at the football games, the band journeyed to Marshall for their homecom- ing activities. Hallmen Handy With Ball SENIOR BASKETBALL PLAYERS After a long drouth of basketball fortunes, the 1956-57 Cardinals stepped in the right dir- ection as they attained a season above .500. Aid- ed by the return of seven lettermen, among them five seniors. Coach Phil Hall's cagers were seed- ed sixth in the district, the first time a Redwood team has been seeded as high in five years. Though possessing only a mediocre 3-3 re- cord before Christmas, the Cards stepped up in pace in January and beat some good teams, in- cluding a strong Granite Falls squad. The Cards are a young team building for the future, but Coach Hall and his team provid- ed us with many thrills at tournament time and shall in the seasons to come. B Squad The B Squad is the middle part of the ex- tensive training system required to fill the posi- tion of graduating senior players. The junior Cards have shown their ability by their winning record, thus insuring basketball prosperity for years to come. “Build while the shoes are small is the motto of junior high coaches preparing for the basketball future. Since coaches realize that the chain is as strong as its weakest link, they have started to build basketball fortu ,es early to es- tablish a winning precedence which will carry over in high school. 60 First Row: Lee Zachow, Don Orth, Alden Half any, Harlan Woelfel, Dale Sandvig, Henry Amberg, Ronnie Hillger, Bryan O’Leary, O. The weakness in the Card lineup appears to be in the upper weights, but strength below mac'e the Cards the favorite to retain their re- gion three title. Wrestling has grown to be one of the major sports at Redwood Falls High School with a tre- mendous turnout of boys for initial drills, indica- ting a prosperous future. To retain their region three title gained in 1955-56 was the definite aim of the Cardinal matmen. Scholl's Mighty Eleven Almost Undefeated FOOTBALL COACHES: Laughlin, Hollister, Hall, Scholl, Thompson 64 William Willcox SENIOR FOOTBALL PLAYERS Sparked by an unyielding will to win, the 1956 Cardinal eleven almost completed an unde- feated season. Coach Scholl and his faithful co- captains, Gordy Green and George Sundem, had high hopes as the season opened with an unex- pected win over Canby. From then on the boys put forth all their efforts toward setting a new school record. All agreed that the most satisfying triumph came with the defeat of a tough Hutch- inson team. Although disappointed over a draw with Granite Falls, the team sti'l hoped for an un- defeated season as our Homecoming game with Springfield, the last of the season, approached. Overpowered by the keyed-up Tigers, they fin- ished their season with one defea to mar its record. Four of the Cardinals were placed in the all-district team: Scott Cairns, Al Roalson, Darell Lindstrom, and Chuck Reed. At their annual banquet the players chose Gary Otto as the Most Valuable Player of the Year, with Scott Cairns earning the title of Best Defensive Player and Darell Lindstrom becoming Best Offensive Plaver. Baseball 1956 Spikes on baseball shoes grip the dirt as the runner slides safely into home plate, tallying an- other score for the Card diamond men. This run, plus many, many others led the Cards to the post- ing of a 7-3 record, the best in five years. The addition of Irv Plotz, a transfer student from Springfield, to the pitching staff was also a big help. The 1956 squad copped the Birch Coulee conference championship with an eighth inning squeeze play—Jim Cairns slid into home plate on Chuck Lamberton's bunt, to break the scoreless tie. Under similar circumstances Morton snapped the Cards' seven-year streak of sub-district titles ip an eighth inning play, making the final score 3-2, thus ending the season. The '56 team won five of its sev- en matches, and in addition, won first place in the Montevideo Quadreangular Meet, and second in the New Ulm Triangular. A change in the State rules prompted a dis- trict golf meet, in which Redwood won the squad title with 252, and placed Jack Knudson, Tom Helgeson, Al Krueger, and Les Peterson as four of the six regional representatives. In the regional meet, the Cards tied with Montevideo at 242 for the team trophy. The festivities began on the night before the game with the traditional snake dance, slinking its way down the streets and alleys of the busi- ness district and with rousing yells and cheers led by the cheerleaders. Terminating the evening was the burning of the gigantic bonfire, combined with more cheers and yells, and the introduction of the queen candidates, co-captains and coaches. This set a precedent for a high spirited homecoming day. At a somewhat slower but suspenseful pace was the crowning of the homecoming queen. A 17 year-old senior, Pam Poynter, donned the tra- ditional crown and robe. Smiling through tears, Pam exclaimed It is one of the happiest mom- ents of my life! Pauline Niemann, Glenna Bengt- son, Dianne Woihe, and Kay Weeks were her attendants. The annual Homecoming parade assembled following the coronation of the queen, and wound its way through town. With many floats fashioned after the winning slogans and with much originality, it was a very colorful and inter- esting spectacle. The excitement of the parade kept spirits running high for the coming game. Spirits soared, the team fought to the last, but the victory was not ours again this Home- coming. Cooks: Any stranger entering the school on April 25 would have been somewhat astounded at what he would have seen, for students were do- ing everything from sweeping floors and peel ing potatoes to admistering discipline and leach- ing solid geometry. The event was Student Gov- ernment Day and the students were governing everything, including the teachers. Exlensive campaigning before the big day was displayed in huge posters that were placed throughout the entire school. Speeches were giv- en on the P.A. system and in the halls, accom- panied by a small brass band that blared away every noon hour. Betty Bronson, Mary Winter, Kathy Riegel, Burlyn Barnes, Janitors: Bud Elbert, Bob Drogosch, Gordie Green. Don Huffman. Janitors: A1 Krueger, Gib Kohlhof. — Christmas Ball As the date of the Christmas Ball drew near, excitement mounted ... so much to do and so little time to do it. Strange music inviting students to attend floated out over the sound system, the gym acquired new festive decora- tions, new dresses had to be selected, suits clean- ed and pressed. When at last all donned .heir dancing shoes and arrived at the Old English Inn (which is commonly known as ihe Lincoln Gym), they were treated to the music of the Tracy Dance Band. Games upstairs, dancing, a f.'ocr show, and refreshments soelled out a wonderful time for all. As the band played the last number, everyone gathered together one last snowflake or holly leaf to be tucked away as a memoir of the gay 1956 Christmas Ball. March of Dimes Drive To spark the 1957 March of Dimes Drive, an Uglyman Contest was staged, with each junior and senior homeroom contributing one candidate adorned at his ugliest. Votes were a penny a- pie:e, and all came to a climax when Joe Dwyer was crowned Uglyman at a very ugly coronation at the Sweetheart Dance February 15. The total collected for 1957 was $533.60.
