VAN WAGONER B. WEAVER W WILCOX . A. WILSON IE One fine day in the spring of 1907, a boy and a girl, Bert Lerch and Mina Sanderson, stood side by side and all alone to receive their high school diplomas. Today, a full fifty years later, we of Redondo should think on the pleasant ordeal of Miss Sanderson and Mr. Lerch, in tight billowing gown and tight celluloid collar, with particular pride and fondness, for they were the first pioneers. They were the Hrst graduates from Redondo High School. Furthermore, as a final testimonial to the toughness and adaptability of the Redondo species, both Miss Sanderson tnow Mrs. Mina Sanderson Currierj and Mr. Lerch are very much THE FIRST PLAY to be presented at Redondo High School, Esmeralda, was performed in April of 1907. Miss Dora Camp- bell Davis and Mr. Albert Lerch, one of the first two graduates are pictured in that ploy. At lower left is Mr. Lerch as he is today, and at the right is Miss Mina Sanderson, the other graduate of 1907. The picture was taken on our campus. At the left is Mrs. Currier Knee Mina Sandersonl as she is today. alive. Mrs. Currier, after a long and distinguished career as a California teacher, now lives with her husband in retirement on a farm near Arlington, Washington, Mr. Lerch, after more than 46 years with Southern California business firms, including 37 years with Stand- ard Oil, is in retirement, living in Los Angeles when he is not traveling about the world. Both of our earliest classmates are alert to the present and clear-eyed and charitable about the pastg the letters the PILOT has received from each are exceptionally well-written. The spelling is flawless and the grammar unimpeachable. Who says we don't teach our young- sters anything here at Redondo? qcannnued on Page 1555 Z Q? Madrigal Singers is a name that originated in the Hfteenth century. It is defined as: An un- accompanied polyphonic group, singing in two to five parts, making use of counterpoint and imita- tion. The Madrigal, which by 1450 was fully developed in the Netherlands, grew out of the applica- tion of descant to secular melody. Only the best musicians of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were in Madrigal groups. This custom has been passed down through the ages and is still prevalent, because here at Redondo we, too, use only the choice in our Madrigal Choir. It consists of six Sopranos, six altos, five bases, and five tenors which are all chosen for their musical ability, appearance, stage presence, willingness to practice and perform on their own time. Each year the Madrigal Choir makes numerous appearances. The following are some of the places they have performed: County Fair, Palos Verdes Breakfast Club, Kiwanis, Redondo Beach Women's Club, Palos Verdes Neighborhood Church, various P.T.A.'s, American Legion, 'gYoung America Sings ton KFI radio stationj, and as always, they help to inspire the graduation cere- monies. In these programs, Madrigal Choir sings typical Madrigal music of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Added for variety are novelty tunes, sacred rites, Negro spirituals, and music of foreign lands sung in its vernacular. The highlight of their year is the trip to Stockton. Only select groups are invited to attend this annual conference. At Stockton, Madrigal represents not only Redondo, but the whole Southland, this year they sang with 1500 other selected students under the direction of Jester Hairston. Madrigal Choir is not merely a group of excellent musicians however, they have added to R.U. H.S. certain aesthetic qualities, honor and fame that could never have been attained without them. Our hats are off to Mr. Misenhimer and his line group. 192 41917.12 Zlaumming Birks Those students who find pleasure in exercising their vocal chords may join the Be- ginning Glee. Under the instruction of Mr. Misenhimer these students find singing as a group most enjoyable. After some of Mr. Misenhimerls training, the ambitious members of Beginning Glee Cbottom picturej may climb the ladder of musical success to perform with one of the advanced groups, the Advanced Glee Cmiddlej or the Choir Ctopj. Henry Fernandez, 57, Bruce Seifert, 495 and Gene McCann, 50, are in pursuit. The running of Rosencranz and Mitch Reinis tore the Redondo squad apart in the fourth quarter. The experts feel that had the locals not been plagued by injuries during the latter part of the season they would have gone on to gain a high place in CIF. REDONDO 0, BEVERLY HILLS 20-Redondo held the Normans scoreless until the fourth quarter when Mitch Reinis and Joe Rosencranz started ripping through the Seahawk forward wall which was badly over- weighed. Among this year's star performers were Gary Little, Bill Trim- ble, Wayne Gonzales, Kenny Lindsay, Lonnie Price, Mike Collins, Louie Riggs, Tommy Haines, Gary Evans, and Steve Van Dyke. His passing accounted for many ot the locals' points, it seemed that he just couldn't miss the target. Redondo's Bee footballers played a great brand of football throughout the season and thus copped the Bay League crown. Coaches Bill Wilcox and Harold Grant must surely be congratulated for masterminding the Bee attack. Under the field leadership of Jesse Gonzales, the Little General, it seemed that no one could stop their attack. The combination of Gon- zales to Dave Jones produced about 70 per cent of the team's scores. The starting forward wall, composed of Chris Elder, Jerry Skaggs, Cliff Box, Ron Shaeffer, Monte Cookus, and John Grothius, held the opposition down to practically nothing during the entire season. The locals ended the season with a Hve win, no loss, and one tie record and were probably one of the best teams in Southern California. 1956 BAY lEAGUE CHAMPS! He is also, by implication, a competitor, ag- gressive as well as gifted. Championship, although popularly conceived as such, is not coniined to the Held of sports. Championship is evident, for example, in the academic world in persons who, through conscientious endeavor, consistently remain at the top of their classes. The academic cham- pion realizes and respects the worth of the subjects he is studying and is willing to program his personal life in order to permit proper attention to them. Again, championship exists in the social world for those individuals who command the loyalty and admiration of their friends. Championship also prevails in the area of extracurricular activity for those students who are willing to accept re- sponsibility and carry it through promptly and effectively. Finally, championship is especially evi- dent in athletics among those who participate with enthusiasm and skill. The true champion in ath- letics is a leader of men, inspiring, cooperative, dependable. Championship inherently is a quality of mind and of heart. No champion has ever won all the time, every great champion has triumphed over defeats and been the better for them. He wills, and the body and mind comply. The great champion is a per- fectionist, and in this continual striving toward perfection the fruits of victory become a natural accolade. More than as merely a winner, he proves in victory that he has mastered himself. Redondo High School prides itself in building champions, and occasionally a champion of champions comes along, a student who excels in scholarship, athletics, and conduct. Such a stu- dent is Dean Moore who embodies the ideal qualities of the American high school boy. He has been an outstanding student through his entire high school career fa member of the California Scholar- ship Federation for four yearsjg he has been prominent in student body activities as an eificient president of the Key Club and a member of the student council, he has garnered ten varsity letters in football, basketball, and tennis, he was on the All Bay League Basketball Team and the All Bay League Football Team, he topped a brilliant high school athletic career by being named to the All California Interscholastic Federation Football team. He has the combination of intelligent leadership and team spirit which marks the great athlete in the finest sense of the word. He also has that spe- cial aggressiveness without arrogrance that marks the worthwhile leader. He sets a high standard for all to live up to in conscientious scholarship, consistent participation, and personal integrity. Redondo High School proudly salutes its champion's champion, Dean Moore, and wishes him continued success and happiness. l34 PICTURED ABOVE are members of Coach Mel Seifert's Varsity basketball team. The Bees had a season record of 24 wins against a single loss. They went undefeated in competition and suffered their only defeat at the hands of Newport Harbor in the Santa Monica Bee Invitational Tour- nament. The CeeHawks had a league record of 11 wins and one lo COACH won lea along with Kincannon. JOHN KINCANNON is being dunked in the shower after his Bee charges gue crown. Pictured are Rockwell, Shearer, Clemo, Hurst, and Gonzales ss. Their sole defeat came at the hands of Santa Monica. Jack Knudson, Isidro Delgado, Tom Shearer, Jerry Joiner, Gilbert Lujan, and Jim Hurst were the BeeHawk mainstays. Knudson led the scoring column with a league average of 14.9 points per game, Joiner and Shearer were second and third with averages of 11.6 and 9.5 points per game. Mainstays of the Cee squad were Bobby Bellows, Doug Terrell, Larry Denhart, Bill DeCarion, Don McDonald, and Chudy Rodriguez. Bellows averaged 7.1 points per game while Rodriguez had a 5.4 point average in twelve games. Coach Kincannon said that he had never seen a high school team with as much co-ordination and teamwork as that possessed by his 1957 Bee hoopstersf, There was a general con- sensus of opinion that the Bees would have probably won the Santa Monica Bee tourna- ment had it not been for the loss of Gilbert Lujan and the illness of Jack Knudson. The Cee cagers must be congratulated for their determination and come-back ability. They were forced to win several games by very slight margins in a league of terrific Cee entries. Once again, Redondo says hats offi' to our championship Bee and Cee basketball quintets and to Coach John Kincannon who was so greatly responsible for their success. One of our most enjoyable activities is that of sponsoring the annual Football Banquet. We have sponsored this affair for the past thirty years, and are most hopeful of being able to sponsor this event for many years to come. Each year we have as an honorary member of the club a student of Redondo Union High School, who attends our weekly meetings and keeps the club personnel informed on the activities of this splendid high school. We also sponsor a speech contest each year, and the representatives from Redondo Union High School have never failed to make a most impressive showing in this contest. The Lions, Club Good Citizenship Award is a coveted prize for a boy and a girl of Redondo Union High School. The award is made each year at graduation. The Lions' Club sponsors many high school activities and, in turn, the high school has initiated a program of permitting the Lions, Club to sponsor the football program at one of its games, with the proceeds derived from the sales of the program being used for our Sight Conservation Project. We again extend our very best wishes to the graduating seniors of 1957, and offer our congratulations to those of you who are returning, for being fortunate enough to again have the privilege of attending this fine school. Lower . left is the barque g'Katie Fleckingl' going ashore at Redondo Beach. Below is the f'Katie Flecking aground in 1905. Bottom picture shows the wreck of g'Mable Grey in l908. Photos are from iine collection of Mr. Bert Lerch. , V it , ima ,aww CConfinued from Page 'IOJ It wasn't easy for those two to graduate. Mr. Lerch writes that the school was moved from temporary quarters in the old Masonic Hall to new quarters in the fall of '06, Mrs. Currier says of their new quarters: . . . the old Chautauqua building . . . was an eight-sided monstrosity -the classrooms around the sides, and a hugh auditorium in the middle? She adds that she was drafted from a Shakespeare addition in Hermosa in order to warrant the hiring of another teacher and she had to ride the electric train to school, Mr. Lerch states that the district had to fight with all the wiles in its power to woo enough students away from Los Angeles to keep a school in operation. It seems that a teacher's duties in those days were in inverse ratio to the scarcity of pupils: Miss Mary Edwards fthe best teacher Mrs. Currier ever knewj taught the upper classes in English, French, German, chemistry and a few sidelinesf' CDisplaying a remarkable memory for names, Mrs. Currier lists twenty-eight students at Redondo at that time.J Fun wasn't abundant. Our only recreationj' writes Mrs. Currier, was gossip, and trying on each other's belts and shoes? Mr. Lerch does not tell of his diversions at school, but at that time the main pastime of Redondoans seemed to be watching the barques and frigates break up in the fierce surf after they were washed ashore. He has many good pictures of gallant old sailing vessels in the processes of being pounded to pieces offshore. It was chieliy because of this treacherous water that Redondo missed out in becoming a major seaport similar to San Pedro today. We hope that you have enjoyed this too brief visit with our first grads and the Redondo of a half century ago. Isn't it reassuring to know that our links with the school's past stretch unbroken all the way back to the beginning of things? Be QBIhe Enemies -Q' 5, f'?E . M my film I' .fi . 3, 3,51 f' 4' , ..
