But as it stands on the threshold of a new half century, it contemplates its greatest challenge, the future, with an intense desire to accomplish even more than the fanciful, idealistic dreams could create, in its second fifty years. As a symbol, then of this forward look, the 1956 yearbook chooses to present JW SQ, itself-new st Ie-as a Jet Age PILOT. ff-v'giv car ffwfxxy . qvq':gU 4'X 'G'-ohf oftf :X-rvvxv iTo develop tha theme there'i'i's, in this book, first the I E W ' AERO, JTNQAN 110-gf--Q IN' '5'7 A 'Yi I c 'Y'P'Y'Ig N permanent training personnel, then -the seq ence of train- T, ,M Ip- - w -a-O'-1,7 q- U fy-1701, NAA '1 , . ANNUAL FINALE TO Red and White Week, which wraps up homecoming, enthusiasm, a tough football contest and the first fall frenzies, the Red and White Dance traditionally begins the year's necktie social activities. W -NNc,A..J FW' ' 23 ' FOOTBALL ALTHOUGH THE 1955 FOOTBALL cam- paign was definitely disappointing from the standpoint of the all-important won and lost column, it was a season of many ups and downs that the record books couldn't even begin to indicate. Among the pair of victories, six losses and one tie, probably the biggest one of all for Seahawk supporters was the 6-O triumph over the arch-rival Mira Costa. The nine game grid schedule included a nucleus of the CIF powers, four of which went on to take their own loop pennants. In the mythical All-Bay League selections, Center John Niemann, Guard Louis Cook, End Bert Valenzuela, and Quarterback Dean Moore landed first string berths. Backs Tim McMillan, Claude Dailey, Bruce Seifert and Tackle Mike Purcell received honorable men- tion ratings. REDONDO' 22, SANTA PAULA 19: ln this grid season inaugural, the Seahawks unleashed a tremendous passing attack against a rugged eleven. DOWNEY 21, REDONDO 6: Against the Coast League champions the Hawks held one of the most potent combinations to only three touch- downs. BEVERLY HILLS 6, REDONDO 0: On the foggy night of October 7, Bob Cardona's local pig- skinners dropped their first game to the Nor- mans since 1939. This eleven figured in CIF playoffs after winning the Pioneer League race. BELLFLOWER 19, REDONDO 13: Even though the Hawks were- three touchdown underdogs QUARTERBACK MOORE skirts end for 29 yard gain against Cen- tennial's Apaches. as they came into the Bucaneer encounter, they played what was probably their finest game of the season. LEUZINGER 14, REDONDO 6: This was prob- ably one of the most disappointing nights of the entire pigskin slate as Cardona and com- pany completely fell apart. The team had many hearty contenders: high point man Bobby Garrett, John Bell, Gary Klingler, Dick Smothers, Bob Johnson and Ted Muegenburg. Bob Sutton, Pete Hacsi and Gilbert Luian were the big guns as the Cees marched to the runner-up spot in the Inglewood Relays and the dopesters were predicting a ditto in the con- ference finals. SOPHOMORE SOUTHPAW PITCHING sensation sends long 'foul sailing out to deep right field against Gardena. WITH ONE OF BASEBALL'5 rarest feats, the no-hit no-run ball game, highlighting an action- packed 1956 horsehide season, Coach Bob Cardona's local nine showed observers another promising ball club against some of the ClF's celebrated powerhouses. Inexperienced sopho- mores and juniors had to carry the load. Catcher Lou Cook, infielder lsidro Delgado, pitcher Jack Beattie and pitcher Bob Carlson gave a taste of things to come. 1956 VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM, back row: Watt, Cook, Beattie, Carlson, S. COMBS SLAMS A BINGLE, Speedy Bobby Combs lines single in left field for one of three hits Seahawks registered against Gardena. The aforementioned hurling gem was executed by sophomore southpaw sensation Bob Carlson in the game that kicked off the 1956 baseball slate against North High of Torrance in late February. At the PILOT deadline, the final Bay League standings had not been determined, but Squeakie Valenzuela, a unanimous all Bay League choice at shortstop, preserved his repu- tation as one of the most powerful and respected hitters in the circuit. Skipper Vince McCullough's Jayvees ran in.to an early season slump where they dropped several one and two run decisions and never quite recovered. The Junior Varsity aggregate also were playing with a rookie combination, another complete turnover from the I955 squad. Winning the blue ribbon for the best booth were the sopho- mores, with the seniors running cz close second. The purpose of Lions International is much more than good fellowship and club social life, important though these are. lt is to recognize community needs and develop means of meeting them, either through its own effort or in cooperation with other agencies. The Redondo Beach Club is celebrating its 'thirty-second birthday this year and through- out the year we have been very proud and happy to support the many activities of the Redondo Union High School. A very happy occasion for the past twenty-nine years has been the annual football banquet tended in honor of the Varsity and Senior Bee football players and their respective coaches and it is indeed our keen desire to continue this practice for years to come. Our club members have been in, and have supported the American Field Service project and we look forward to having those fine young people from foreign lands attend our meet- ings as guest speakers. Our nineteenth annual Students Speakers' Contest was another activity in which we have enioyed the wholehearted and enthusiastic support and cooperation of the faculty and students of the Redondo Union High School. We consider it an honor and a pleasure- each year to be permitted to present the Lions' Club Good Citizenship award to an outstanding boy and girl graduate. We have been grate- ful during the past several years for the demonstration of appreciation of our interest in the R.U.H.S. student activities by being permitted to sell programs at one of the football games. The money thus derived is expended on our Sight Conservation and Blind Aid program in which program many unfortunate youngsters are made happier with properly fitted glasses and medical treatment. I We of the Redondo Beach Lions' Club wish to take this opportunity to extend our con- gratulations to the members of the senior graduating class of T956 and we are confident that because of their experience and training they will make better citizens and will assume their rightful place in this world of ours.
