MT V In 1905 Redondo Union High School offered two courses, one, college ipre- paratory and the other, commercial. Today the high school boasts a wide variety of subiects and innumerable modern facilities which enable future job holders to enter their professions well prepared. In her fiftieth year Re- dondo's campus, with nine completed buildings, is being remodeled to hold two more. The Seahawk emblem now stands as a symbol of high scholastic achievement, and many Redondo grad- uates are continually becoming leaders in their chosen fields. W,- THE PUSHER AND SHOVER CAMPUS COMPLICATIONS page 61 The campus in the last fifty years has behaved like an amoeba. First it included one block of camp- ground at the corner of Diamond and Elena. Then it built and rebuilt that area, pulsing and surging, up, down and around. It burst across Francisca, and it split off a separate entity for the Seahawk Bowl. Next, the two parts grew together, both spreading up the hill. This year, with the areas firmly joined, there seemed nothing to do but to shove the top of the hill down a little and take out those silly old streets that weren't good for anything but parking, anyhow. For instance, plays have been produced here since 1910, a cheer leader has been standard equipment since there were more than two students to raise their voices, Comites Romanorum led all the other clubs into existence, and student government began in '10, and remod- eled in '24, and in '46, and in '54. The only loss in the final eight games came at the hands of unbeaten Inglewood where Rex Hughes and the Sentinels' Dick Buckelew hooked up in one of the mostgthrilling battles of the year. The JUNIOR VARSITY, after a slow start came back to win four of their last six games, including a last second triumph over the same Inglewood five which had earlier beaten them decisively. Coach John Kincannon's BEEHAWKS rallied to sweep their Ia-st eleven games to capture the Bay League crown with a II-'I record. Wayne Smith scored 42 big points in a single game to highlight the season. Moreover, this was Ken's first year of Varsity football after three seasons of outstanding competition with the Beehawk eleven. ln achieving this honor Ken did all the punting, the punt and kickoff returning for the Seahawks in addition to playing a whale of a game at his left half position. Kenny deserves much praise for this tremendous ac- complishment in that the Bay League always provides some of the stiffest competition in the state while producing many excellent players who make up the college gridiron rosters year after year. For his excellent sportsmanship, leadership and all-around playing ability in the cage sport during the 1954-55 basketball season Rex very deservedly received the honored distinction of being named to the All-Bay League Basketball Team. While setting his great record of a 19.6 point average per game, Rex topped all the rugged players he faced in addition to leading the Redondo hoopsters to third place in the Bay League standings. The Bees, who were second to the Apaches in the league finals and topped practically all opposition throughout the season, were particularly strong in the 1320 where Ted Dale gave the hometowners a hearty contender. BASEBALL page 132 With baseball's rarest feat, the successful execution of the triple play, highlighting an action-packed T955 season, Coach Bob Cardona's Seahawk horsehiders showed onlookers a promising ball club as they met some of Southern California's stiffest competition. The Redondo nine played with a young squad composed almost entirely of sophomores and iuniors, the lone exceptions being Brent Banta and Harlow Irvine, who performed in utility roles. Some of the younger ballplayers, namely Pitcher Jack Beattie and Catcher Louis Cook impressed many of the so-called experts who are predicting a bright future for Cardona's team. The aforementioned triple play occurred in the 'first Torrance Tartar engagement at Memorial Field after Beattie had loaded the bags with nobody out in the top half of the eighth inning. The Seahawks went on to win the encounter in their half of the frame, as Walt Burris doubled and the Torrance hurler, Tom Vander- pool, forced in the deciding tally when he walked the next three batters to face him. At the PILOT dead- line, the Bay League standings had not been determined since the season did not close until the latter part of May. E 'P'i' ' GIRLS ENJOY ARCHERY THE LION S' CLU of REDO DO BEACH The Lions' Club of Redondo Beach was chartered thirty-one ' ' .' years ago and during each of these thirty-one years this club -,, ,yi has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Redondo Union High School and all of its many activities. This past fall marked the twenty-eighth year that our organization has spon- sored the annual Football Banquet to honor the Varsity football team and the Senior Bees. lt is the hope of our club that we will be privileged to sponsor this same festive affair for the next twenty-eight years. Each year a representative from Redondo Union High School serves as an honorary member of our Lions' Club. This year we had the distinct pleasure of having your Mantle Bearer, Brent Banta, as your high school representative. We also sponsor a speaker's contest each year and representatives from Redondo Union High School appear before the local club to determine the local winner, and this winner then goes on to the zone contest to compete with representatives from other high schools in the area. We have never failed to be proud of the speakers sent to us from Redondo Union High School. Each spring at graduation the outstanding boy and the outstanding girl, as selected by the faculty of Redondo, is presented the coveted Lions' Club Good Citizenship Award. Several years ago the boys' R Club of Redondo Union High School wished to show their appreciation of the Lions' interest in their activities and made available to the local club the proceeds of the football programs sold at one of the outstanding games each season. The proceeds derived from the adver- tising and from the sale of the programs is used exclusively for our Sight Conservation project. This proiect is one devoted to seeing that youngsters who are financially unable to purchase necessary glasses and to receive necessary medical treatment are properly cared for. We wish to extend our best wishes to the graduating seniors of T955 and we are looking forward to the extreme pleasure of following the activities of the returning underclassmen who we are sure will have another fine school year in 1956.
