' , Next year Redondo Union High School will be fifty years old. To mark this fact the PILOT presents its Pre-Anniversary Number, celebrating forty-nine years of high school history. This book will attempt to trace the growth of the old campus and the development of student activities. You will probably not be surprised to learn that in the beginning there was a bond election. This money purchased the Chautauqua building, a multiple-sided auditorium originally located on the site of the present district oliices. In the early days South Bayans were entertained and enlightened here by distinguished lecturers who traveled the Chautauqua circuit. The large picture at the right, taken in 1900, reveals the south side of the building and the tent platforms of the campsite that provided shelter for the visitors who came to hear the noted lecturers. The small insert picture shows the remodeled building as it opened to house R.U.H.S. It contained five classrooms, two science labs, an ofiice, a furnace room and a faculty of four. 'LThe entire structure was wired for electric lighting and electric bellsf, says the 1906 handbook, proudly. After one year of light schoolkeeping' in two upstairs rooms of the original Masonic Temple, the Red and White moved into its first official home. Q . X . The 'Piper's eldest descendant, the PILOT, first appeared in ' 1915 and has been published continuously since 1923. Shortened wartime numbers were published in 1944 and 1945 as The Log. The yearbook strives to present a record of the graduating class and to review the activities and achievements of the year. The Sandpiperfs second offspring was the High Tide, mimeographed first in 1919-20. The paper grew rapidly, being printed the next year by the Reflex Company. It was published bi-monthly until 1923 when it became a weekly. It assumed its present form in 1940 when it grew to five columns. The third of R.U.H.S.'s publications, the Compass, appeared Hrst in 1929 as a brainchild of the English department. It took over the presentation of student literary efforts from the PILOT. In 1933 the Writers' Club was founded and continued the project. This club changed its name to the Penpointers in 1937, and has continued to publish the Compass as an annual magazine composed of poetry, sketches and short stories written by the students. 1 V s I I!!
