' , Next year Redondo Union High School will be fifty years old. To mark this fact the PILOT presents its Pre-Anniversary Number, celebrating forty-nine years of high school history. This book will attempt to trace the growth of the old campus and the development of student activities. You will probably not be surprised to learn that in the beginning there was a bond election. This money purchased the Chautauqua building, a multiple-sided auditorium originally located on the site of the present district oliices. In the early days South Bayans were entertained and enlightened here by distinguished lecturers who traveled the Chautauqua circuit. The large picture at the right, taken in 1900, reveals the south side of the building and the tent platforms of the campsite that provided shelter for the visitors who came to hear the noted lecturers. The small insert picture shows the remodeled building as it opened to house R.U.H.S. It contained five classrooms, two science labs, an ofiice, a furnace room and a faculty of four. 'LThe entire structure was wired for electric lighting and electric bellsf, says the 1906 handbook, proudly. After one year of light schoolkeeping' in two upstairs rooms of the original Masonic Temple, the Red and White moved into its first official home. Q . X . The 'Piper's eldest descendant, the PILOT, first appeared in ' 1915 and has been published continuously since 1923. Shortened wartime numbers were published in 1944 and 1945 as The Log. The yearbook strives to present a record of the graduating class and to review the activities and achievements of the year. The Sandpiperfs second offspring was the High Tide, mimeographed first in 1919-20. The paper grew rapidly, being printed the next year by the Reflex Company. It was published bi-monthly until 1923 when it became a weekly. It assumed its present form in 1940 when it grew to five columns. The third of R.U.H.S.'s publications, the Compass, appeared Hrst in 1929 as a brainchild of the English department. It took over the presentation of student literary efforts from the PILOT. In 1933 the Writers' Club was founded and continued the project. This club changed its name to the Penpointers in 1937, and has continued to publish the Compass as an annual magazine composed of poetry, sketches and short stories written by the students. 1 V s I I!! Damage from the 1933 earthquake necessitated the remodeling of the interior of the structure in the next year, and the removal of the dis- tinctive columns twelve years later. The building, still in good condition, continues, also, to house a variety of community projects of a musical, theatrical, or educational nature. Annual recitals highlighted each year from the he- gxinning until 1951. These programs grew into a full-fledged dance drama with the production of Irish Fantasyf, This year, once again, the rhythms classes put their best feet forward in an Allied Arts presentation, supported by the band and singing groups. ... .,.-.! This pattern began with the girls' physical education program, in 1916. However, it did not take its present shape until 1925, when hockey was the last of the major sports to be introduced. page 113 Even before there were gym Classes, there were young fem- inine uthletes: the 1915 PILOT shows two fair charmers out for tennis. The street cars from Los Angeles still rocked down Diamond Street after coming out of the cut back of the present Boys, Gym. The tennis courts are on the site of the present, but passe, Lincoln building. The old garage was housing school roll- ing equipment even then, and gym classes were meeting in the old Continuation building, which had housed classes during the building program when the 1906 model was making way for the newer model. This p'cture shows the old campus at the beginning of phase two. My 1 l it lk lllll lil fl fflwl D fa YY PACIFKI COAST HIGHWAY 'df vrw - 9345i .b 0 Ji 6 ,J-:QS . One of our most enjoyable activities is that of sponsoring the annual Football Banquet. Wfe have sponsored this affair for the past twenty-seven years, and are most hopeful of being able to sponsor this event for many years to come. Each year we have as an honorary member of the club a student of Redondo Union High School, who attends our weekly meetings and keeps the club personnel informed on the activities of this splendid high high. We also sponsor a speaking contest each year, and the representatives from Redondo Union High School have never failed to make a most impressive showing in this contest. The Lionis Club Good Citizenship Award is a coveted prive for a boy and a girl of Redondo Union High School. The award is made each year at graduation. The Lions' Club sponsors many high school activities and, in turn, the high school has initiated a program of permitting the Lions' Club to sponsor the football pro- gram at one of its games, with the proceeds derived from the sales of the program being used for our Sight Conservation Project. We again extend our very best wishes to the graduating seniors of 1954, and offer our congratulations to those of you who are returning for being fortunate enough to again have the privilege of attending this fine school. ,ggqpp s-gaw3N 'K 0 Q oft ig Qi E I i if if e i n R f if g i Z gi si 'wt A ,In 5 ng a, i- . 1 as ADVERTISING 8:07 a. m. page 119 CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF '54 REA'S HARDWARE Smith Realty Company neurons - msunsns 433 Via Corta Palos Verdes Estates, California FRontier 52559 PRESCRIPTIONS - DRUGS - SUNDRIES RIVIERA PHARMACY Peter S.
