Here will they seek their own particular gold until they can say, Eurekal I have found lt. Also a tea held for girls new to Redondo had as its purpose to acquaint girls with the students of Redondo and in so doing create a friendly atmosphere. The invita- tional Bay League Conference of the Girls' League aimed to secure ideas from other schools for girls' league activities, their methods of supervising the girls in uniforms, etc. At Christmas the Girls' League planned packages for needy girls. April 8 was Girl Hate Boy Day , girls were not allowed to speak to any boy in school for one day. infraction resulted in punishment by the girls. At the Hi-Jinks all girls were urged to participate in honoring the queen with skits, music, and costumes. The final event each year is the Co-ed Ball sponsored by the League at which time every senior girl is eligible to be voted queen or a member of the court. This formal dance also honors the May King who is crowned with the queen before a large majority of the student body. t . -. 1 . They are chosen from members of the Junior Class on thc basis of five points: l. High scholastic standing 2. Student body leadership 3. lnterest in government 4. High moral character 5. Good sportsmanship For a week, they experience a laboratory course in city, county and state government. This year, lO were privileged to attend. Each student who attended Girls' or Boys' State has this year proved himself worthy of that honor by being outstanding in his field. Ron Cox became a definite leader when he assumed the duties of Student Body President. Dewey Falcone and Jerry Hershey became Commissioners of Athletics and Entertainment respectively. Charles Dickinson was not only Treasurer of Scholarship Society but throughout his high school career has received grades high enough to allow him to be a seal bearer. Robert Crane was President of the Bible Club and also a member of Scholarship Society. Bill Pickler has done outstanding work in the field of stage design and construction. Not to be outdone, the girls also proved their worth. Sally Masury and Cynthia Fessler were both active in Girls' League work, serving two terms as Vice-President and Secretary respectively. Janet Rogers has been outstanding in music, while Joan Anthony has served as the Editor of the Pilot, our annual yearbook. Janet Rogers has also re- ceived high grades during her high school days and is one of our seal bearers, and Joan has been a cheer leader .mil Secretary of R Club. VARSITY SHOW GULLIBLES' TRAVELS Western Combining student talent and student direction, the l949 Varsity Show developed the idea of a radio quiz show with the three pairs of winners receiving trips to unknown lands. Each pair was privileged to select the chosen spot and journey to that spot for a vacation of fun, all expenses paid. The first couple, sophisticated to a high degree, allowed their small son to choose a Western Dude Ranch. The cowboys proved ready and waiting with a program of slapstick and corn . Skits, songs, dances, and the never to be forgotten piano, ukulele and guitar accompaniments provided a true vacation tor our visitors. mvnimn oufh America New York Act ll saw a second couple on their way to Broadway and the bright lights of New York City. They too enjoyed the music of the orches- tra, songs, specialty numbers, and dances of a large group of en- tertainers. The third pair left their native land tor a sojourn to South America and were fascinated by the South American rhythm of the music and dances, Band members. provided both specialty numbers and orchestral accompaniments for the entire i949 pro- duction. The Bruins tallied twice in the initial quarter and then fought val- iantly to hold down an inspired Redondo squad which bruised and battered their way up and down the Sea Hawk Field. Ill fated Nick Vargas, who later was lost for most of the season because of an injury, scored both Tds. Dewey Falcone shared backfield honors, while the left side of the RUHS line was highly praised for holding the Bruins at bay in the second half. A slight case of fumblitis spelled doom for Coach Russ Striff's hard charging Sea Hawks in the second tilt of the season, as Ray Wheba's Mt. Carmel Crusaders took advantage of the breaks and squeaked out a close I2-7 victory. Dewey Falcone tore through a large hole in the center of the line and outran the Crusader secondary for Redondo's lone tally. Again it was the Sea Hawk line which showed great promise and kept the speedy Carmel backs from breaking away. Even at this early date, it was easy to see that Cunningham, Barton, Greg- ory, and Plasch were among the top linemen in the Bay League. Old man iinx rode high on the back of the Sea Hawks in the Bay League opener as fumbles, bad deflections, and intercepted passes gave the i947 and '48 champion Santa Monica Vikings a I8-O victory over Redondo. Bobo Lewis, All-League halfback, scampered to all the scores. A dellected pass which fell into the hands of Lewis gave the Vikings the first score in the closing minutes of the initial half. The game was actually a toss-up until the final minutes when a series of passes and runs through the Redondo second string gave the Vikings two more tallies, Sea Hawk quarterback Joe Geonetta pulled a couple of trick plays out of Coach Striff's bag of knowl- edge, and that was all that gave a cocky Redondo eleven a narrow I3-I2 victory over Leuzinger in their second league tilt of the season. Roger Bacon flipped a short pass to Jack Wash for the initial Beach score in the first couple of minutes of play. Dewey Falcone and Mike O Connor tore through a weakened Olympian line after the half to give the Hawks the final tally. VARSITY Coach Doug Essex coupled his speedy Inglewood halfback Jimmy Sears with lots of team inspiration and thc- Sentinels came through with their outstanding game of the season, nosing out the Sea Hawks, 20 to I3. Fiilliiack Bill Strickland and halthacks Dewey Falcone and Mike O'Conner stood out for the Red and White, doing the principal offensive damage to Inglewood. Dick Wise and Dave Kelly played their best ball of the season in the line. The roaring Panthers from Long Beach Jordan were tamed to a quiet squeak as The Sea Hawks clawed and ripped their way to a l9,-6 upset victory in their third league tilt of the season. Behind near-perfect line blocking, the RUHS backfield of Falcone, Strickland and O'Connor ripped off nice gains and Geonetta's pas-,inq and kicking stood out, Flankmen Wash and Gregory played great defensive ball in addition to hauling down spot passes which resulted in the setting up of two TDs. Reserves Ron Cook, Harold Turner, Dean Dick, Roger Bacon, and Fred Czarske stole honors along with O'Connor's 90-yard spring to tallyland. A guy by the name of Dean Dick planted a one-point conversion through the uprights in the second quarter and then seven mules headed by Ken Barton got tough and stubborn and kept that one point good for a victory as the Sea Hawks nosed out the favorite Beverly Hills Gridders, 7 to 6. Strickland followed Czarske and Barton through a hole on the left side to paydirt. Dick converted and from then on it was the RUHS line which hauled down the Norman banner. Basil Cunningham, All-League tackle, was lost for the season early in the second stanza. A bruised and battered Torrance eleven plodded to a I4-7 win over the Sea Hawks in the grid finale of the I948 season and knocked the Beach boys back into a third place league tie with Beverly Hills. Strickland scored the RUHS TD, sharing backfield honors with Plasch, Wise, Kelly, and Williams who spearheaded a powerful Redondo defense and offense. BAY LEAGUE GAMES Redondo O ...,.. ...... The club initiated new members this past year, however it still chose as its leaders more experienced members who have ranked scholastically above average. These include Dolores Ganzhorn, president, Libby Harlow, vice-president, Joan Anthony, secretary, and Mary Ellen Weber, treasurer. Miss Bee McCollum has served as R Club adviser, and Mrs. Nellie Barber has sponsored the G.A.A. Class representatives were Jean Carmichael, senior, Barbara Andersen, junior, Diane Davidson, sophomore, and Beverly Clement, freshman. The climax for the year is the annual R Club banquet at which formal initiation of new members is held and officers for the coming year are installed. G. A. A. Gay costumes and bright decorations carried out the Spanish Fiesta theme. The program was presented for all girls who wished to participate. Mingling the gayety of the holidays with the seriousness of the Christmas spirit, a queen was chosen each period and entertained in the typical fashion with the breaking ot the pinata and the colorful dancing in her honor, With Miss Bee McCollum, adviser, all ot the teachers worked with the girls on their lively dances, and in the evening the teachers, themselves, presented a special dance number. ...if W RHYTHMS Throughout the rhythms class Calendar this year there have been four mann events. ' 'J' SENICSRS The game's started! The Girls' Athletic Association organizes early each year and is open to all girls interested in the spirit of fun, competition, and good sportsmanship. Its purpose is to foster friendliness among the girls of R.U.H.S. and it offers opportunity for active participation and initiative on the part of every girl. This year girls interested in G.A.A. have been grouped in the seventh or eighth periods. For initiation in G.A.A. the prospective member must submit service credits earned in activities such as gym duty, fiesta, or team credit for participation in the three day tournaments held at the close of each of the seasonal sports. As a conclusion the honorary team play-offs are held prior to the spread when winners are announced. Members of honorary teams and substitutes are selected by the girls themselves, usually one team to represent each class. ln addition to sports activity on the campus, the Redondo G.A.A. is a member of the Girls' Athletic Federation, and this year four members attended the G.A.F. Convention at Hemet. The most important event in'girls' sports this year has been the playday on our campus, May l4. All schools in the Bay League entered teams in the various sports, hockey, basketball, softball, volleyball, speedball, archery, and tennis, The day began with a folk dance program, Eleanor Metheny spoke of her experiences teaching girls' sports in Japan.
