Debafers Work To Reach Sfafe he Debate Club was a group of people who like to persuade and argue constructively. They are inquisitive and tend to have the desire to act a little bit. The club had many ojbectives. The stu- dents understand the principles of ar- gumentation and competitive debat- ing. Acquiring skill and proficiency in techniques of analysis and research is important to debate. Developing skills in orderly and persuasvie presenta- tion is significant to the delivery of a debate. Developing judgement and objectivity in the analysis of contro- versial subjects are skills used to help present your topic. Competition is a large part of debate and students are more mature in handling pressures. These skills were improved with prac- tice and debates provided a great learning experience. b Jennifer Muenze dent Randall Creek, Vice President Grace Wang, and Secretary Jayme Stubbs. The Debate Club went to a number of tournaments. Each indi- vidual received points and an overall individual ranking. Competition be- tween individuals is the main objec- tive of debates. The team doesn't win and lose and there is no point system. The 1986-87 Debate Club has been one of the very best fielded by Redmond High School. - Doc Salisbury. There were five members. These were Randall Creek, Captain, David Santosuosso, George Chang, Jeff Muter, and Dave Russell. Two of the team's significant members were lost to the exchange program These two members were Alex Hannemann and Jorg Helbig. The team finished in second place be- hind Lake Washington. They played nine matches and lost only two of them. Chess involves a great deal of time and concen- tration. Chess players must always be thinking ahead about what their next moves will be. Four members of last year s team graduated so there was a great deal of question about who would turn out for the Chess Club. Randall Creek the Chess Club Captain is the only returning player. He says I was really impressed with this year s new and talented team. The Chess team began strong this year U v v 1 u v 1 av and finished strong regardless of the loss of two players. David Santosuosso was unde- feated and made a great amount of pro- gress. Mr. Hargraves the Chess Club advi- sor comments that This year s team de- veloped into a real contending team one of with th1s year s new and talented team ' Randall Creek the strongest teams in the league.
