C IQ' MEMBERS OF HIGH SCHOOL BOARD OF EDUCATION-Leo Egg, Dr. John Dorsch, chairman, James L. Brown, superintendent-principalg Robert Beesleyg Clayton Norton, assistant principal, Norm Lantz, Mrs. Lou Shive, clerk. I2 wma, afar. saw, mam: any Redmond Union High School is School Dis- trict U-1-J and draws its more than 530 stu- dents from eight districts which have or- ganized together to provide a high school education for children living in an area of 644 square miles lying in parts of Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties. Districts organized into this union high school since it was started in Redmond in 1915 now include Alfalfa, Powell Butte sec- tion of Crook County, Opal City, Redmond and Plainview, Tumalo, Lower Bridge, Clo- verdale and Terrebonne. An elaborate and expensive bus system is maintained to trans- port students from these various districts. Leo Egg and John Dorsch, Redmond, Bob Beesley, Tumalo, and Norm Lantz, Terre- bonne, were elected by district residents to serve on the board of education. This board of education meets on the sec- ond Monday of each month with the super- intendent to conduct school business and is essentially a policy-making group. The board legislates and establishes general policies, determines the curriculum offerings, pre- pares an annual budget with the appointed members of the budget board, decides on building programs, determines policies for school attendance, and interprets the com- munity's attitude toward the kind of facili- ties to be provided for education. They oper- ate the school according to state, federal and county laws. They are elected for five-year terms and serve without remuneration. Deans and Assistant Principal On opposite page at the upper left are pic- tured Deans William H. Fisher and Mrs. Marguerite Lowry Cstandingj and Assistant Principal Clayton E. Norton. Clayton Norton's duties as Assistant Prin- cipal are to make out monthly attendance reports, to supervise student registration, to arrange for substitute teachers, to serve as registrar, and to help with guidance and dis- ciplinary action. As dean of girls, Mrs. Lowry issues ab- sentee slips, advance make-up slips, tardiness excuses, gives personal guidance, and as- sists the students in applying for college scholarships. William H. Fisher, dean of boys, is in charge of checking on daily attendances, clearing absences, counseling students, and helping the seniors apply for college scholar- ships.
