Brown, superintendent-principalg Robert Beesleyg Clayton Norton, assistant principal, Norm Lantz, Mrs. Lou Shive, clerk. I2 wma, afar. saw, mam: any Redmond Union High School is School Dis- trict U-1-J and draws its more than 530 stu- dents from eight districts which have or- ganized together to provide a high school education for children living in an area of 644 square miles lying in parts of Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties. Districts organized into this union high school since it was started in Redmond in 1915 now include Alfalfa, Powell Butte sec- tion of Crook County, Opal City, Redmond and Plainview, Tumalo, Lower Bridge, Clo- verdale and Terrebonne. An elaborate and expensive bus system is maintained to trans- port students from these various districts. Leo Egg and John Dorsch, Redmond, Bob Beesley, Tumalo, and Norm Lantz, Terre- bonne, were elected by district residents to serve on the board of education. This board of education meets on the sec- ond Monday of each month with the super- intendent to conduct school business and is essentially a policy-making group. The board legislates and establishes general policies, determines the curriculum offerings, pre- pares an annual budget with the appointed members of the budget board, decides on building programs, determines policies for school attendance, and interprets the com- munity's attitude toward the kind of facili- ties to be provided for education. They oper- ate the school according to state, federal and county laws. They are elected for five-year terms and serve without remuneration. Deans and Assistant Principal On opposite page at the upper left are pic- tured Deans William H. Fisher and Mrs. Marguerite Lowry Cstandingj and Assistant Principal Clayton E. Norton. Clayton Norton's duties as Assistant Prin- cipal are to make out monthly attendance reports, to supervise student registration, to arrange for substitute teachers, to serve as registrar, and to help with guidance and dis- ciplinary action. As dean of girls, Mrs. Lowry issues ab- sentee slips, advance make-up slips, tardiness excuses, gives personal guidance, and as- sists the students in applying for college scholarships. William H. Fisher, dean of boys, is in charge of checking on daily attendances, clearing absences, counseling students, and helping the seniors apply for college scholar- ships. inf 0-I V ' K Z ' 2 vw jf, ' ' , it, . 3:90 'HW 1 - ?fQf 'vn??g4 ' .- ' ft ' tw, itil. frih iz., il J' Wu! it W --.-, ..,. . In April of each year student body officers and rally squad members are elected for the following year. By laws of our st.udent body there are 3 cheer- leaders and 7 songleaders. Tryouts are held and the students elect the new members. Student body of- ficers, club and class representatives and publica- tions editors composed the student council which worked with Superintendent Brown to help make the school run smoothly. Annual kick-off party for the entire school at the first of the year was spon- sored by the student council. CNot pictured: Mike Harrington, FFA representative, Ruthie Mills, Pep Club president, Alton Mitchell, chorus representative.J swmz Early ewaz Student participation through school ad- ministration is the basis upon which the student council operates. Club activities, programs, concerts and dances are all council projects. Regional meetings are also a main point of interest. Litterbugging was central theme of the newly formed assembly committee. Ken Davidson, Roger Kurtz, Carole Parkinson and Sue Swearingen made up the committee. More interest in assemblies promoted par- ticipation which was reason for this organ- ization. Uniform dance rules and better sports- manship were two points of interest in stu- dent council regional meetings. This region includes Bend, Madras, Prineville' and Red- mond. At the regional meetings the Travel- ing Sportsmanship Trophy was revived. Better sportsmanship and better feelings be- tween Central Oregon schools is the purpose of this trophy. Coaches, referees and rally squads vote after each game for the deserv- ing team. At the end of the season, these votes are counted and the team with the highest number of votes is awarded the trophy. That team may hold the trophy for any length of time, depending on who wins it next year. Names and dates are inscribed upon the trophy each year that it travels from one school to another. Arrangement of the school's activity cal- endar is also supervised by student council. Each organization sends in its requests for dates next year. In the spring the dates are organized to make up the calendar. Student council met every Thursday in staggered periods to do this and other jobs. Presidents and class and club representa- tives make up student council. Every presi- dent and elected officer is a voting member. Representatives of organizations are ad- visory members. ff-flfff Saud -.-. an -:J f 'N 2 JV CHEERLEADERS-Susan Hurney, Carolee Edmonds. Donna Blue. Rally Squad members pictured in first semester outfits. Outfits chosen by the cheer leaders for football season were white bulky knit sweat- ers with white culottes. Song leaders wore white bulky knit sweaters, gold pleated skirts and white earmuffs and gloves. White blouses and maroon corduroy jumpers were worn by the cheer leaders for basketball season, and the song leaders chose gold jer- sey blouses and maroon jumpers. Each Year Rally Club sends a representa- tive to a cheer leading school in order that this representative may return with new ideas and routines for the other members of the rally squad. Journalism is a one-year elective course in the English department. Students may take it in their junior or senior year if they have a 3-point average in English. The press and printing industry are studied as students learn to write up stories and headlines. Field trips included two trips to The Red- mond Spokesman printing shop where the annual and Panther Scratches are published. Nine issues of Panther Scratches were published this year. Publications are financed by 50 cents from student body tickets and S650 backing from the school district. Elizabeth Edmonds and Ruth Ann Hartley were editors for the annual. Cathie Lan- thorn, Ned and Ted Schroeder and Sandra T7 Q Pollock sold ads. Approximately six pages were assigned to each of the other st.udents to edit under the supervision of Mrs. Della Bell, journalism class instructor. Lani Fren- zel, junior, will step into Carole Parkinson's place as editor for the Panther Scratches next year. Ned and Ted Schroeder spent six weeks bringing the sports book up to date from three years past. All athletic events are re- corded in this book. The annual budget, about 353500, is made up from the 953 each student pays for his annual and all other is made up from ads printed in the back of the annual. The Red- mond Spokesman publishes the annual and Giles is the photographer. MEMBERS 0F JOURNALISM CLASS-CBack Rowj Shirley Liston, Ann Nunnellee. Carole Parkinson, Ned Schroeder. Degrees are given for completion of projects concerning improvement of school, commun- ity, and self. Points are given for each com- pleted project, and the degrees are formally awarded at the Mothers' Tea in the spring. Membership is open for all girls who have completed one semester of home economics. FHA is the largest club in RUHS and was formed in 1946 as a member of the nat.ional organization. Because of the large membership, the freshmen met separately and carried on their own projects. Their main project was selling baked potatoes at the football games. Milk sales, after-game dances, and a Cen- tennial dance were the main projects of the senior group. February 27 was the day stu- dents came to school in Centennial outfits. Trail Boss candidates were Kenny Stanton, Jim Ivory, Gary Romine, and Denny Hanson. April 4 was the date of the second annual FHA formal. Chairmen of the various com- mittees were Fay Shirtcliff and Georgia El- liott, decorations, Lena Duncan and Bonnie Faubion, publicity, Sandy Miller and Sandy Kraft, tickets and programs, Sara Moisan and Sandra Boyce, clean-up, Marie Beesley, refreshments, Gail Tyson, music, and Diana Yeoman, entertainment. Sandy Miller and Bonnie Faubion were the delegates to state convention in March. Sandy Kraft and Janice Brown were district convention delegates in November. Mrs. Mary K. Swearingen, adviser, accompanied the girls on both trips. May 4 was the date of the annual Moth- ers' Tea. New fashions were reviewed dur- ing the style show.
