Brown, superintendent-principal. 4Not pictured: Dr. John F Dorsch.J R Zlnion Jliqla, Sdzool fbbihiol W-I-f Redmond Union High School is School Dis- trict U-1-J and draws its more than 530 stu- dents from six districts which have organized together to provide a high school education for children living in an area of 644 square miles lying in parts of Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties. The districts organized into this union high school since a high school was started in Redmond in 1915 now include Alfalfa, Powell Butte section of Crook County, Red- mond No. 2 which includes Opal City, Red- mond and Plainview, Tumalo, Lower Bridge, Cloverdale and Terrebonne. An elaborate and expensive bus system is maintained to trans- port students from these various districts. Five individuals from this union district are elected by the people to serve as the board of education. Because this is essen- tially a rural area, representation is main- tained from the rural areas as well as the city of Redmond itself. Mr. Snabel lives in Powell Butte, Dr. Dorsch and Mr. Egg in Redmond, Mr. Beesley in Tumalo and Mr. Lantz in Terrebonne. This board of education meets on the sec- ond Monday of each month with the superin- tendent to conduct school business and is essentially a policy-making group. The board legislates and establishes general policies, de- termines the curriculum offerings, prepares an annual budget with the five appointed members of the budget board, decides on building programs, determines policies for school attendance, and interprets the com- munity's attitude toward the kind of facili- ties to be provided for education. They ope- rate the school according to state, federal and county laws. They are elected for five-year terms and serve without remuneration. ami. James L. DRILL TEAM MAJORETTES Carole Hancock and Pat McClure .-S' Two student publications-the school news- paper, Panther Scratches, and this yearbook, The Juniper-were edited by the journalism class. This year the school paper was published primarily as a page in the town paper, The Redmond Spokesman. Highlights of this page have been departmental reports, Know Your Teacher, Dear Lee and Around the Halls. Two issues, one at Christmas and one for graduation, have been published in the regular Panther Scratches format. In addition to editing Panther Scratches and The Juniper, journalism students have learned how to write a news story, an edi- torial and headlines. The press as a weapon for democracy, freedom and responsibilities of the press, history of journalism, trade journals, libel laws, journalism as big busi- ness, intelligent newspaper reading are some of the units studied, both from consumer and producer viewpoints.
