The five men on the board represent several districts which have formed this union high school district. They give unstintingly of their time and talent to make this one of the best high schools in the state. Pictured at the left is James L. Brown, superintendent of Redmond Union High School for the past three years. He has run the school this year kindly, but firmly, and his sense of humor and high ideals are apparent to students, members of the staff, and other citizens. Basic philosophy of his administration seems to be respect and consideration for others with each indi- vidual accepting his citizenship re- sponsibilities to develop a school where each may learn to his maximum ability. i fPictured at top right is Assistant Principal Clayton Norton and at lower right are Deans Marguerite Lowry and Wm. H. Fishery As assistant principal this year, Mr. Norton's duties have included guidance, testing, keeping attendance records, and the hiring of substitute teachers. As dean of girls, Mrs. Lowry is in charge of issuing absentee slips, ad- vance make-up slips, tardiness excuses, giving guidance, and other supervision of girls. This was her third year as dean of girls here. Dean of boys for the last eight years at Redmond has been William H. Fisher. CNot pictured: Dolores Gallegosj ' WSW The three smiling custodians pictured be- low Crightb keep the school plant in tip-top shape for students and faculty. Pierce Jacob, head custodian, has been here for five years and is a friend to students and teachers alike. He is usually on duty from 7 until 11 in the morning and from 2 to 5 in the afternoon, and is on hand for night school activities. Ed Agee has been here for four years and works from noon until 8. Fayet Scoggin works during school hours and also drives a bus. This was his first year on the staff. These men are entitled to three cheers for all the broken windows they replaced, the snow they swept up, and the messes they cleaned up after careless students. Their job is tough and sometimes exasperatingg their patience and good humor have been outstanding this year. Pictured at the right with the new Locke triplex lawn mower are Fayet Scoggin, Pierce Jacob, and Ed Agee. Mrs. Virginia Vance, district clerk and office training teacher, and Miss Joan Griffith, office receptionist, head up the of- fice staff. Students who work in the office one period each day get full training in office procedure, which is part of the business education department. Office training students have regular in- struction, take tests, and get graded, in addi- tion to helping to keep the school running smoothly by serving the public at the count- er, answering the telephone, operating the inter-communication system, collecting the attendance slips each period for the deans, and duplicating material needed for class- room and extra-curricular activities. In order to enroll for office training, a student must be interested in business, be capable of doing the work, and be O. K.'d by the administration for the job. Chaplin, Tumalo Pictured at the top of this page are the drivers, with their regular bus routes listed. Drivers are hired upon application and pass- ing of a driving test similar to that taken in drivers training. Each holds a chauffeur's license. Mr. Kraft has driven since 1951 and Mr. Chaplin since 1952. Mr. Scoggin and Mr. Ulrich drove for the first time this year. This was Mr. Clark's first year as a regular driver, although he has substituted before. In all kinds of weather they bring students to school. Handling student discipline on the busses is no small item of their job. Friendly and uncomplaining, they have con- tributed to a real part of the school year. Manager Clyde Talbot Pictured at the bottom of this page is Clyde Talbot working in the bus garage. His job consists of hiring and firing drivers, mapping routes, maintaining busses-anything from a major overhaul to tightening a bolt, driving the bus for most extra trips, such as sports events and band trips, and driving the Des- chutes route regularly. He came here in February, 1950. Students and staff members like and respect him. His ability as a me- chanic comes in handy for everything around EW! Sqdfem Six regular school busses transport about 66 per cent of the R U H S students to school each day The busses travel about 471 miles a day using 70 gallons of gas each day. Three Christmas baskets were prepared and distributed to needy families by the Red- mond chapter this year. Four different ban- quets were prepared and served this year for the Central Oregon Schoolmen, football players, basketball players, and the F. F. A. Because the membership was so large, the freshman girls met separately and carried on projects of their own. They sold home- made candy during noon hours to raise finances. May 14 was the date of the annual Mother- Daughter tea the members sponsored. The district convention was in October at Wy'- east, near Hood River. Patsy Frakes and Joan Peck were delegates to the state con- vention in Corvallis February 24 and 25. Joan Peck was Redmond's candidate for state secretary. Three degrees may be earned by members. These are awarded for completion of projects concerning improvement of school, commun- ity, home, and self. Points are awarded for each completed project, and degree awards for the year were made at the Mother- Daughter tea. Tillmaook 26, RUHS 7 Redmond led 7-6 at the end of the first half, with Earl Schult having made the score and Don McClure, the conversion. After a few vital mistakes on Puss' part. the Cheese- makers roared to a 26-7. Prineville 13. RUHS 6 Puss just couldn't do it this year. Between the bad breaks and the penalties, Redmond lost by a 13-6 decision, with Dave McCrea making Redmond's lone score. Crater 32. RUHS 20 In an offensive battle the Crater Comets scored more times than did the Panthers. The Comets held a 26-20 half-time lead. In the second half Redmond's defense stiffened, but so did the Comets' line, and the Panthers couldn't get anywhere. Final score was Crater 32, RUHS 20. Pendleton 33, RUHS 7 The Panthers bit off more than they could chew when they scheduled the Bucks this year. Redmond's boys did an outstanding job by holding the visitors to a 7-7 tie at halftime. The Pendleton potent passing at- tack was too much for the Cats and at the last gun, Pendleton had a 33-7 victory. At Gran! Union 13, RUHS 14 Redmond came through with its first win of the season when they defeated the Grant Union Prospectors there 14-13. Grant scored first on the opening kickoff. Rod Reid re- covered a Panther fumble in Grant's end zone for the Cats' first score. Then, late in the third quarter, Don McClure went up the middle for a run of 67 yards, and Earl Schult converted for a 14-6 lead. Grant Union scored again late in the fourth quarter. Lakeview 13. RU!-IS 33 After spotting Lakeview a 7-point bulge, the Cats really poured on the coal. During the game the Panthers amassed 401 yards as compared to 122 for the Honkers. Schult and McClure shared the Cat scoring. The final score was Redmond 33. Lakeview 13. A! Burns 12, RUHS 0 The Puss was upset by the Hilanders, who were really up for this one. The Panthers were weakened by spud harvest and couldn't get their offensive machine rolling. The 1-lilanders managed to do something that no other team did so efficiently, and that was to stop Schult and McClure. The final score of this game played in the rain was Burns 12, Redmond 0. At Bend 25, RUHS 7 Bend's Lava Bears proved just too much of- fense for the Panthers to stop this year. The score at half time was 12-0 in favor of the Bears. Redmond avoided a shut-out late in the third period when McClure took Joe Peterson's handoff, spun away from the last defensive man, and raced 30 yards for a Panther TD. A pass from Peterson to Rod Reid netted the extra point. Redmond threatened again the fourth period, but the Bears stopped the Panthers and went on to win 25-7. Redmond 14. Madras 6 The Puss scored early in the first quarter, with Earl Schult bombing 9 yards off-tackle to end a 47-yard thrust, with Don McClure converting. Again in the third period Schult boomed over a TD. McClure was there to get the extra point on a crossbuck. Madras got its 6 points in the fourth period to avoid a shut-out.
