Sz'uJen1'6awwdf250wcZ16'luJf4' Directing club activities is the main purpose of the Student Council, which is made up of student body officers, class representatives, and school pub- lication editors. All school dance forms, complete with names of committee members and chap- erones, must be turned into the Student Council to be O.K.'d. Directing student body assemblies was taken over by the council this year under a system by which the clubs and classes put on the assemblies. The annual kick-off party was planned and sponsored by the student council the first week of school. A lot of work is put into the party, and it is a big help in getting new students acquainted with the school and student body. Two banquets are given each year for the combined Central Oregon Stu- dent Councils by a member town. This year they were given by Prineville and Bend. Reports on the different Student Councils' activities are heard at these banquets and plans for future meetings are discussed. Barbara Bartlemay, Sally Steers, Eunice Wareing Members of the rally squads as of September, 1953, organized a Rally Squad Club in February. The purpose of this club is to promote good sports- manship in the various sports, in school activities, and in following school rules. The aim is to better the morale, school Waddell dl Y! feadm spirit, and sportsmanlike attitude of the student body. The Rally Squad Club sponsored the decision made by the Student Council that beginning with the 1954-55 rally squad elections, the squad elected will hold office for a full school year. Terry Quinn, Karen Schoen, Sue Swift, Edythe Urie, Ila Jean Edgerton Sw Queen.: M9 .Queend fedm Joyce Eckwortzel, Carol Sawyer, Marilyn Marker, Dixie Kratz, Sharon Rector Basketball and football song and yell- leaders are elected by a majority vote of the student body each year. Football rally squad tryouts are held in the spring, and the squad elected takes over during the following year's football season. Basketball rally squads are W elected about two weeks after the close of football season. Both rally squads did a good deal to- ward boosting school spirit of the stu- dents and the team. The rally squads arranged regular pre-game pep as- semblies. Joann and Keith were crowned King and Queen of Hearts February 13 at the Valentine dance sponsored by the Rally Squad club. They were elected by money votes with one penny equal to a vote. One of the outstanding features of freshman initiation was the auctioning off of freshmen to seniors for slaves the remainder of the day. The seniors enjoyed a chance to have a lazy day, but regretted to see the end of it come. Two performances of Ask Me An- other,'l a three-act comedy, were given by the senior class February 19 and 20. Sunday, May 23, was baccalaureate, and May 26. at commencement, diplo- mas were presented to 108 seniors by the chairman of the school board. President Don McClure, Vice President Courtney Lantz, Secretary Frances Swanson, Treasurer Darrell Wool- iser. s sez Wp 1 ' eww One hundred forty-five sophomores have been busy on various projects this year, among which were putting on an assembly for the student body and set- ting up a more democratic way of gov- erning their class. Because the class of '56 is so large, the sophomores are the first in RUHS to do away with floor nominations for elections of any kind. They now have a nominating committee that meets and picks candidates, who are then voted on by ballot. This system has proved to be very successful. Sharon Rector and Earl Schult were elected by the sophomores as candidates for the King and Queen of Hearts. A dance, sponsored by the Rally Squad Club, was held in honor of the royal court, the king and queen of which were the senior candidates. Mmm of 61444 of 1956 wg, g ' 8' 1 f.. 4 , J.. OCT. 9 Redmond again put the jinx on the Lakeview Ilonkcrs by beating them 13-0. The Honkers have not won from Redmond in a football game since 1940. Martin Zapp plunged over for the Panthers' first touchdown. Don Kissler added the final TD by going over on a quarterback sneak. Bob Clark passed to Larry Zitek for the extra point. MADRAS 13-REDMOND 0. OCT. 23 Madras handed the Panthers their second league game defeat on the Panthers' home field by a score of 13-0. Madras was willing and determined to beat the Panthers, The Buffaloes had the game well in hand most of the time, except for a couple of drives the Panthers staged. PRINEVILLE 27-REDMOND 13, NOV. 6 Redmond Panthers were defeated by the Prineville Cowboys, state B champs, 27-13. The Cowboys got off to a 14-0 lead in the first few minutes of play. Then Neale Callison picked up the ball after one of the Redmond linemen had blocked a Prineville punt in the second quarter and went 5 yards for the Panthers' first touchdown. Prineville in the first minute of the third quarter made their third TD. Bill Rector, Redmond's shifty halfback, took the ball on Prineville-'s 20-yard line and went around end on a reverse for the Panthers' second TD. Bob Clark shot a pass to Earle Smith for the extra point. Prineville then took the ball, and on a series of downs made their fourth and final TD. The score was then 27-13. The game ended with the Panthers on Prinevilles 1-yard line. BEND 20-REDMOND 6, OCT. 30 Is it a jinx? The Bend Lava Bears have taken another from the Redmond Panthers. Bend continued a 30-year winning streak by beating Redmond 20-6. Bend got off to an early start and made two touchdowns within the first minute and a half. Redmond made their only score in the third quarter. A pass to Larry Zitek from Martin Zapp set it up. From the 5-yard line Zapp took it over for the TD. Bend, a little later, intercepted a pass and ran it all the way back for their last score. Redmond was awarded the CO football sportsmanship trophy by the association of Central Oregon Student Councils. tFootball letters were awarded to the players on the edges of these two pages. Redmond opened its basketball season by participating in the Central Oregon jamboree at Prineville, in which they beat Bend 20 to 5, lost to Burns, 8 to 11, and lost to Lakeview, 3 to 5. The Jamboree was divided into two groups: the North, Prineville, Redmond, and Mad- ras, and the South, Bend, Burns, and Lakeview. The North won 79 to 66. Redmond Panthers defeated Albany's Bulldogs on their home floor 65 to 60. The Bulldogs had one of the biggest teams in the state, so this was an outstanding victory for the Panthers. Washington Colonels of Portland, Oregon, were taken for a ride as the Panthers ran up a 54 to 40 score. Washington was one of the best teams in the Portland league. Pendleton's Buckaroos from Eastern Oregon invaded the Redmond Panthers, giving them their first defeat of the year by a score of 45 to 44. The Redmond Panthers beat the Madras Buffaloes for the third time by a score of 47 to 57 on the Panthers home floor. Redmond Panthers played one of their best games against the EOCE Frosh. The Panthers rolled up a 67 to 46 score and were able to use a lot of reserves in doing it. Bend Lava Bears were defeated by the Redmond Panthers for the second time by a score of 53 to 35. This was the last league game of the season for both ball clubs. 46,6333 W ,ang ,J , Earle Smith Wilbur Woolhiser Doug Zitek Larry Zitek Redmond Panthers once again won their first game in the district tournament against Burns by a score of 55 to 46. It was a well-played game by both teams, but Redmond got its fast break going in the fourth quarter to come out on top. Burns was considered the toughest team when the tournament started, but did not show up as expected. They lost both of their games and ended up on the bottom in fourth place. They lost to Redmond the first night, and then lost to Lakeview the second night. The second night the Panthers met up against a team that couldn't miss. They were the Madras Buffaloes, the same team the Panthers had beat three times during the season. Redmond's shooting average was about 42 per cent, which will usually win any game, but not this game: Madras shot about 47 per cent. This is the last year that there will be a tournament. Next year the winner of the Central Oregon League will go to the State Tournament. If this system proves satis- factory after two years, it will be used thereafter.
