Shepard PAN TIIEII SCRATCIIES Under the efficient management of the journalism class the Panther Scratches came out with flying colors, taking third place in the state contest for high school newspapers at the University of Oregon. The paper has made a commendable record this year under leadership and untiring efforts of its editor, Dolores Thorn- ton, and Barbara Wyckoff, assistant editor. FUTURE FARMERS 0F AMERICA The Redmond F.F.A. chapter was awarded the Keystone Certificate this year for the first time as one of the outstanding chapters in the state. The chapter received the Sears Foundation award of 354.54 for the pro- duction of essential food. Canby, Grants Pass, and Baker were the other chapters in the state to receive the award. Gerald Eby received the State Farmer degree along with 37 other boys in the state. Fayet Scoggin re- ceived the Union Pacific scholarship for S100 to be used at some agricul- tural college. Every boy in the chapter tried out for the public speaking contest, with Gerald Eby winning the contest, followed by Jeff and Roe McDaniels. Other boys in the finals were Jay Larsen, Harold Klann, and Richard Snelson, which was given before the Chamber of Commerce. Eby repre- sented the chapter in the district contest that was held in Henley. The parliamentary team was composed of Fayet Scoggin, Art Foss, Victor Livingston, Clyde Carlson, Gerald Eby, and Stanley Green, advisor. The team placed third in the district contest. Over 150 people attended the Parent and Son banquet. Honorary mem- ber degree was conferred upon Lloyd Baker, Ross Kellogg, and L. J. Mc- Daniels. Glen Weaver, state director of vocational guidance, was the main speaker. The F.H.A. prepared and served the banquet that was held in the study hall. The annual barn dance was held in the Ag Shop with more than 200 attending. Lila Mae Popish was crowned queen by Fayet Scoggin. Square dances, Paul Jones and regular dances made up the evening's entertain- ment. Chapter membership was made up of 19 Green hands and 28 Chapter Farmers, making a total of 47 for the year. Officers included Fayet Scog- gin, president: Art Foss, vice-president, Don Ferguson, secretaryg Willard Thornton, treasurer, Gerald Eby, reporter, and Stanley Green, advisor.
