Britten He gains his greatest satisfaction from befriending R.H.S. students and helping them toward discovering a more meaning- ful and beneficial life. He came to R.H.S. as a Junior and the following year he was named all-C.B.L. tackle. After gradution he attended U.C.L.A. where he again won recognition in foot- ball. He played on the Bruin varsity team for three years; then his football career was climaxed when he played in the Ro se Bowl, January 1, 1954. In June of that year he was graduated and then entered two years of service in the U.S. Navy. Although he originally planned to be a rancher, his interest in young people led into the teaching profes- sion. He first taught in Riverside, but returned in 1959 to his Alma Mater, as a math instructor and coach. On the playing field he emphasizes hard, but clean play. His J.V. football teams have responded to his leadership, in turn, by winning all but two games in the past three seasons. His strict discipline and lack of self glorification have been a constant inspiration to his students. Outside his teaching life he has become involved in both church and community activities. His popularity with young people has increased through his work with Young Life and Lite House. Therefore, with pride we dedicate this 1966 AAAKIO to Mr. Lawrence J. Britten. Debbie Fitzgerald Editor Dear Makio Staff, We are young, we are alive, we ore the future! Congratulations, Makio staff . . . your yearbook has truly captured this theme . . . you have been creative and diligent throughout this entire year, one marked by the usual problems and ironical turns of fate. You have all contributed greatly to the success of this book. My special thanks can only be inadequately ex- pressed to veterans Cindy and Sandy Smith, my two right-hand men without whom I could not hove possibly functioned effectively. Other bouquets should be handed to Barbara Hegyssey, who drew our excellent lettering, Linda Hinkle, who created our gem — the theme, and Rick Krantz, who in addition to his duties as Sports Edi- tor, did a great deal of photography. Finally, the entire staff, section editors, and photographers, who all per- formed so beautifully, deserve, too, the highest praise for their endeavors. Thank you! Education is an instrument of the total culture, yet recognizes the dignity of the individual. It must also contribute to intelligent and devoted participa- tion in public affairs, develop sound principles of citizenship, foster loyalty and patriotism for our country, and aid in the solution of civic, social, and economic problems. ' It is in the application of this philosophy that these men have established the high standards of education that characterize and distinguish Redlands Senior High School. Gen Richard L. Scott (Ret | hik inil ' ' 17 Dear Students, The issuance of the 1966 Makio means the close of another chapter in the history of Redlands Senior High School. It is another chapter that has been filled with numerous accomplishments, the setting of new records, and the stowing away of memories that will be renewed to you as you read your Makio in years to come. We, here at Redlands Senior High School, hope that these will be sweet memories. We feel that 1965-66 has been another great year and all of our students have played a port in making it so. To the Seniors, I offer my best wishes, and hope for you the most pleasant and meaningful things in life. To the Juniors and Sophomores, 1966-67 lies ahead of you. What goes into the record book in the future will depend on you. I hope you will have a most pleasant summer and also that you will be making your plans for the coming year. As the old saying goes, even a gold mine is of no value unless it is worked. May Red- lands Senior High School be your gold mine, and may your work truly produce rich experience. Robert G. Admitted- ly, we are a class that has not been able to obtain so many of the more visible glories that preceding classes have ob- tained, but nevertheless, we have taken a permanent position of honor here. This is convincingly demonstrated by the scores of trophies placed through our efforts within the walls of Terrier Hall. Among these are awards for excellence in athletics, speech, and agriculture. Most of us will remember the many great experiences we have encountered during these years at Redlands High, years that are now swiftly sinking deeper into the past. The future is no doubt uppermost in our minds. Many are excited over the prospect of becoming a part of the college generation ; all are increasingly aware of the Vietnam War. Whatever your chosen course of eventual fate, may each and every one of you, the members of the Class of ' 66, meet with unceasing fortune m the years that lie ahead. After all, any class can come in last in the Can Drive and Homecoming, but the thing that is important is that it is not whaf you lose but how you lose it. Never- theless, in my opinion we have the mak- ings of a basically good class, but we still need time to prove ourselves. As I look back at our activities I can see that we have all the spirit and gumption that we need, and within the next two years I feel that our class will attain the unity that all the classes strive for. I would like to thank all of you who devoted your time and effort to the sup- port of the class. I am grateful that I am one of the ones responsible ior getting the Class of ' 68 off to a successful high school career. oJoAf C JJjJuL SOPHOMORE REPRESENTATIVES: Top to Bottom: Anonymous, Kotie Mueller, Margie Johnson, John Morse, Kerry Campbell, Jane Nakken. After many long weeks of practice, much of which was spent sloshing through a muddy field, this year ' s Terrier Band emerged full of the famous RHS spirit. Originality characterized all of the routines this year, in particular those of the colorful Homecoming program. The flashing fire of Charlene Hudson ' s baton solos also added to the excitement and color. The band, under the direction of Har- vey Smith and Drum Major Mike Kunz, was also invited to attend the annual High School Band Day at the University of Southern California. JSm mj ' « P stf On Wednesday evening, November 22, the Redlands High School Drama Department presented its first production of the year. And, from the minute tbe curtain rose, the series of events proved true to the play ' s title: they could have happened only in America. The play, a dramatization of the book by the same name, is characterized throughout by the satirical, highly-enjoy- able wit of Harry Golden. The plot deals with a writer, Harry Golden, who comes to Charlotte, N.C., to forget his past. The effects of his anti- Segregation paper, the Carolina Israel- ite , on the staunch segregationalist community provides for enjoyable, thought-provoking entertainment. Cris Copen led the cast as Harry Golden, with Bonnie Curtis playing his secretary, Helen Chaney. Brian Craig, Mary Ellen Abilez, and Stacia Barker each had supporting roles. The play was directed by Billie Daniel, who once again deserves the praise and admiration of everyone for an excellent job. wf m Iff jm 1 4 HP ► 1 ' - 1 «. 1 vif 1 ' ' l ■Bi ' l l 1 iHiu an If 1 On Wednesday evening, November 22, the Drama Department presented its second production of the year, The Man Who Came to Dinner. This ingenious Hart and Kaufman comedy, deals with the effects of a famous personality, Sherridan White- side, upon the quiet, respectable household of a middle- aged Ohio couple, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Stanley. Sherridan Whiteside, critic, lecturer, and Abominable Irritant of the Year, v as commendobly portrayed by Chris Hoyt, v ith Stocia Barker as his sharp-witted secre- tary Maggie Cuttler. Lorraine Sheldon, the overwhelm- ingly flirtatious actress who nearly upsets Maggie ' s plans , was portrayed by Elaine Dale, with Cris Capen as the handsome, somewhat naive Bert Jefferson. Director Billie Daniel deserves high praise for this polished, thoroughly enjoyable performance. Credit is also due Cindy Lengnick and Connie Brundage, who led the production staff as Production Manager and Stage Manager, respectively. Z he Man Who Came to ' Dinner . . . Hi Seniors, Juniors, and Sophies of RHS! Thanks o lot to all of you who helped me so much in making this exciting year even more enjoyable. You have been just won- derful to me, always willing to give me a hand. I want all of you to know how much I appreciate it. Certainly I have learned a great deal during my school year, not only during lessons but also otherwise. I have learned where to find my classrooms in the jungle of all the different buildings, and I have learned how to balance a bunch of books without bumping into somebody or dropping them more than twice. An- other problem was how to go over to the Junior High Building between two periods and still be on time. And last of all I even succeeded in telling apart a spaceman from a member of the football team, when he is dressed in his outfit! You see all the problems I, as an ignorant European, had to master! But after all it was fun; fun, I like my whole year here. Thank you so much for everything, Brigette Roth Brigette Roth Switzerland I I 126 Dear Friends at Redlands High, One year in the U.S. is almost gone. The Seniors were especially thrilled when their float, Temple of Athena, was proclaimed the first place winner, despite its late arrival at the Bowl. The Juniors took second with The Land of Hino , and the Sophomores were third. The parade wound its way through the streets to the Bowl where a tremendous pep rally was staged. At the door, to the glee, dis- gust, or humiliation of all, they were met by a slide, the means of entrance. Everyone was all smiles as they stomped to the Five of a Kind band after their unbelievably grace- ful entrance. The corn-squeezins were in a rather interest- ing pair of distillery-like barrels, and after refreshment, Mar- ryin ' Sam performed his hitchin duties for all who wished them. With Cris Capen reigning as Li ' l Abner, the affair was quite an event. 150 Once again Seniors, Junoirs, and Sophomores swept down on the city of Redlands in a hectic attempt to break all previous records in the annual Can Drive. This year, a twist took place when victorious Juniors brought in 9,200 pounds of canned food. The Seniors came in second with 8,980 pounds and the Sophies were third with 5,800 pounds. Through the efforts of the students, there was found in the Family Service bounds everything from apple juice to eggplant appetizer. After an exhausting evening of can-chasing, the Terriers returned to await the announcement of the winner at the successful Inter-Club Car- nival and Stomp. The event was marked by the infamous Block R Dunk- ing Booth and, naturally enough, food, food, and more food! 152 H UncaHHtj Affair . Once again, the picnickers had a hilarious time at the amoeba races, the iunior-senior baseball game and the water- balloon throwing contest. This year the juniors won the baseball game and the seniors pulled through with the amoeba cham- pionships. Food was also a major attraction, and students found the picnic tables abounding with pizzas, hamburgers, soft drinks, cakes and cookies. When evening came, the Terriers trekked over to the Girls ' Gym for the first swinging Y-Nite of the year to end a great, fun-filled day. cW : j? Endeman ' s Terriers opened the league play with a tremendous game against Ramona only to lose in the final seconds, 62-64. Ramona was the eventual league champion. In the Terriers ' second league outing they dropped a heartbreaking 45-46 game to San Berdoo. The closeness of these two ball games is a perfect picture of the entire basketball season. No less than seven ball games were played to within one or two points or ended in a tie which sent the team into overtime. Mike Miller was voted Most Valuable Player by his team mates, averaging 14.4 points per game. Mark Englebretson was voted Most Inspirational player, while Charles Austin was chosen Most Improved, and Senior Rex McBride was selected Team Captain by his team motes. 177 ( - j j I CBL LEAGUE SCORES RHS OPPONENT „.„,„. There were many chal- lenging moments that brought the athletes to- gether as one team, fighting for that over-all victory. Some of the outstanding individuals this season were Andy Souiek and Steve Shawver in the distance races, Bob Break competing in the high jump; Bob Manning and Steve Peterson in many of the sprints; Willie Townsend in the broad jump; Frank Thornquest in the pole vault; and Marvin Benz in the high jump. Mike Weaver did a great job competing as a B in the low hurdles. Dennis Kessler broke the B pole vault record by clearing 12 ft. 10 in. Besides capturing the CBL championship, the swimmers tied for second place in the Southern California Relays, placed second in the Optimist Relays out of 23 teams, placed first in the Palm Springs Relays, and first in the Upland Inv. meet composed of 17 teams. The times in the 200 Med. Relay, 50 Free, 200 Indiv. Medley, and 100 Back were good enough so that the swimmers in those events were considered for the National High School All American team. The fol- lowing swimmers were honored by individual awards by vote of the swim team: Class A Dean Kackley, team cap ' t. 1966; Garth Huffaker, most in- spirational; while John Gorman was elected team cap ' t. for 1967. Now we can only guess that before long we will be dancing Under the Magnolias, and the Daisy Chain will be there as we go to Class Night, and then we ' ll have the Farewell Picnic, Honor Day, graduation, and the fantastic time at Disneyland. 223 Jndeic Semors Accuno, Sam 36, 1 1 5. 1 62, 1 84, 1 93 Acheson, Don 36,174,192 Adams, Cynfhio 13,36,121,122 Adams, Doug 36 Alexander, Jim 36,139 Alexander, Leslie 36 Allenby, Sue 1 14 Allman, Gary 36 Allred, Dennis 36 Alonzo, Richard 36,170 Anderson, Carol 1 14 Anderson, Glenn 36, 1 25, 1 62, 1 66,35 Arendt, David 36 Argleben, Kathleen 36 Armitoge, Don 36,182 Arredondo, Michael 36 Arroyo, Richard 36 Arzaga, Alicia 36,133 Ash, Greg 36,1 15 Auerbacher, Alice 36,120,121,122 Aulgor, Judy37 Aulgur, Rita 37 Austin, Charles 37, 178, 179 Avonce, Sue 37 Avey, Debbie 37 B Bobcock, John 37 Bochiu, Erin 37 Bacon, Margaret 37,147 Bolaban, Gerald 37 Bardsley, Pat 37 Barker, Stacia37,125 Barnett, Koy 37,121 Barrett, Pat 37 Barron, Carol 37 Barron, Keith 37,1 1 5,1 70 Bartlett,Jome5 37,122,170 Borflett, Wayne 37 Bottahco, Marianne 37,198 Bottersby, David 37, 1 1 7, 1 58, 1 62, 1 88 Bean, Kothy 37 Becker, Barbara 13,37 Beckley, Mike Beddoes, Steve 38 Bedoya, Elaine 38,149 BeeBee, Emily 38,207 Beefier, Karen 38,135 Beltran, Danny 1 15 Bennett, John 38 Bennett, Merilee 35,38,1 14,1 17 Benz, Marvin 38, 1 1 4, 1 1 7, 1 72, 1 88, 1 91 Beredo, Jane 38,1 15 Berg, Maybelle38 Bergstrom, John 38,1 15 Bergstrohl, Karen 38 Bethell, Cindy 38 Bethurum, Paulo 38 Beverly, Robert 38,60 Bickford, Jill 126 Biddick, Chris 36,109,135 Biermo, Bob 38 Billick, Barbara 38,138,35 Binder, Gordon 38, 1 20, 1 2 1 , 1 22, 1 35 Bischoff, La Donna 38 Bloomingdole, Louise 38, 1 97, 1 26, 1 35 Blumenthol, Bruce 39 Boatman, Tracy 39,172,191 Bock, Mane 39, 133 Bolin, Vicky 39 Bomgordner, Paula 39 Bond, Darryl39,117 Bowles, Bill 39 Boyd, Kothy 39 Brocy, Mike 39 Brody, Douglas 39 Brady, Patricia 39 Brandenberger, Karen 39 Break, Bob 32,39,1 22, 135, 188 Breihan, James 39 Breyer, Mary Jeanne 39 Brinks, Dwoyne 39 Bristow, Linda 39 Brown, Flodie 39 Brown Michael 39 Brownson, Guy 39 Bruce, Doryl 40 Bruckort, Robert 40, 1 74,192 Bruins, Jackie 40 Brundoge, Connie 40 Buckmaster, John 40,1 30,1 31 Buland, Raymond 40,122,135 Bultron, Doniel 40 Burgeson, Janet 40,1 17 Burgess, Chuck 40, 1 74,192 Burke, Betty 40 Burley, Sieve 40 Burtron, Joanne 40 Buyok, Don 40, 130 Bumo, Ralph 40 Cobral, Carol 40 Cobrol, Richard 40,1 15 Cagle, Steven 40 Coires, Ken 40 Coirns, Scott 40 Comareno, Oscar 108 Campbell, Chris 33,41,138,122,135,35 Canonica, Pat 41 Campbell, Croig 183 Capen,Chris41, 104, 125,186 Cordozo, JoAnn 41 Carlisle, Dole 41 Carlstrom, Holly 134,41,108,1 14,120, 121,122 Corswell, Gail 41 Cossel, Paul 41 Castonedo, Cecilia 41 Christensen, Cindy 41 Cisneros, Joe 41 Clark, Brenda41 Clark, Kothryn 41 Clark, Ross 41 Clark, Tom 41 Clay, John41, 135,184 Cleaver, Phil 41 ,159,162,178,179 Coder, Karen 41 Cole, Sandy 41 Coleman, Ed 41,174 Colemon, May 41,174 Collette, Steve 42, 130 Collins, Chuck 42 Conner, Candace 42,1 1 7,1 26 Commissaris, Harold 130 Cook, Candice42,122 Cook, Terry 42 Correio, Keith 42,172,188 Corneio.
