Dedication i It is with deepest admiration that we, the class of 1957, dedicate our Makio to Mrs. Mable Sales, who has given to us so freely of her time and friendship. Throughout her college years she received various academic and elective honors. She achieved letters in four major sports, besides being active in a special concert choir. Before coming to Redlands she taught at Cleghorn Union High School in Iowa, and Sterling College in Kansas. Since September of 1949 she has unselfishly divided her time between the English department and counseling at Redlands High School. We salute you, Mrs. Sales, for your constant endeavor to guide ours, The Class of ' 57, to greater success. 9 X td Page 8 t . i V Page 9 Board of Trustees — Left to Right: Dr. Keith R. Retiring Coach Bob Scholton s track team ended this year ' s season with one of its best records of the last few years, five wins and two losses. Records fell before such trackmen as Bill Rogers, Henry Cross, Ron Schneider, Jack Ulmer, and John Brown. Rogers smashed the forty-three-year-old school record for the 100 yard dash with a light- ning time of 9.9 seconds, plus two other C.B.L. records. He is the first Terrier to run the 100 in under ten flat. Cross heaved the twelve-pound shot 53 feet and three-eighths inches. Ken Hurlburt also threw the shot over 50 feet many times to form a terrific combination of Terrier point getters. Ulmer became the first B to hurl the ten pound shot over 50 feet in the history of R.H.S. Brown in the broad- jump, and Schneider in the 100 yard low hurdles, established new marks. Schneider lowered Willard Wright ' s mark. Also scoring valuable points for the varsity were Sam Williams, Jerry Neuman, Bruce Lewis, Bob Cochran, and Ralph Hernandez, all seniors with the exception of Jack Carper, a junior. 1 he ' B ' s were paced by Rogers, Ulmer, and a relay team composed of Marco Fiorello, Gary Hale, Brown, and Rogers. The Terrier Tankmen lost by eight points in the C.B.L. finals, with the last event, the relay, deciding it in favor of Riverside. Sam Armacost, in the 100 yard backstroke, and Walt Keith, in the 100 yard Individual Medley, came in first for the splashers. Other point getters for the Terriers were Larry Lewis, Fred Gowland, John Martin, Jerry Atkins, Dave Adams, and Clark Upton. Fred Gowland, in the 100 yard breaststroke, and the Medley Relay team of Armacost, Lewis, Bob Fluter, and Keith, set new C.B.L. records during the season, in which Redlands defeated Chaffey twice, Palm Springs twice, Pacific once, and Coachella once. In the C.B.L. relays, the varsity came in second, as did the C ' s. Coach Anderson can be proud of this years team, especially since many of them will be back next year. Alakdalak This year ' s baseball standings didn ' t show the true quality of the Terrier squad. Although Redlands had AII-C.B.L. center-fielder Roger Chaney, whose batting average of .404 was second in the C.B.L., they couldn ' t get a winning streak started. The fighting spirit of the Terriers came through as many of the scores were close. Even though six of this year ' s team will be graduating, next year should be another good year with Tony Alvino, with the second highest batting average on the team, Manuel Ballesteros, and Bill Bloebaum coming back. The Junior Varsity, under Coach Ducey, had a very successful season, winning 14 and losing 6. Many sophomores, including Tom Fox, John Thomas, Jim Zander, and Roy Lauwers, played on the team and will be back next year to help the varsity. And, departing, leave behind The flowering of his nurtured seed. Seek far and wide in any creed Where men have toiled with word and deed; By any judgment you will find — Here was a man. Still will his spirit onward lead, And everyone who looks may read His signature most boldly signed Indelibly upon the mind; And we who wait must ever heed: Here was a man. — Sheldon Hebburd Page 171 ALMA MATER Where the purple snow-capped mountains Reach the clear blue sky Lies our cherished Alma Mater Our dear Redlands High.
