Ralph Weaver RALPH BUCK WEAVER, ONE OF THE FINEST COACHES THE RHS HAS HAD, CAME TO REDLANDS IN 1949. UNDER HIS EXCELLENT TUTELAGE, REDLANDS HAS WON TWO CBL TITLES AND HAS TWICE ADVANCED TO THE SEMIfFINf ALS OF CIF PLAY-OFFS. BUCK WEAVER BEGAN HIS COACHING CAREER IN HIS HOME CITY, YOUNGS- TOWN, OHIO, AT FITCH HIGH SCHOOL. FITCH HIGH WAS A MEMBER OF A YOUNGSTOWN CITY LEAGUE FOR SIX OF THE TWELVE YEARS MR. WEAVER COACHED THERE. IN THOSE SIX YEARS HIS FOOTBALL TEAM WON FIVE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS. SIMILAR SUCCESSES FOLLOWED AT PITTSBURG HIGH - THEN CAME THE WAR. IN 1943, MR. WEAVER ENTERED THE NAVY AND REACHED THE RANK OF LIEUTENANT BY THE TIME OF HIS DISCHARGE IN 1946. THREE YEARS LATER HE CAME TO REDLANDS AND ASSUMED THE DUTIES OF ALGEBRA INSTRUCTOR AND HEAD FOOTBALL COACH. MR. WEAVER'S EARLY SCHOOL BACKGROUND IS INDICATIVE OF HIS CHAR' ACTER AND LATER SUCCESS. HE WAS ACTIVE IN NUMEROUS SCHOOL FUNCf TIONS, BEING SENIOR CLASS PRESIDENT, CAPTAIN OF THE FOOTBALL TEAM, MEMBER OF STUDENT SENATE, AND A PARTICIPANT IN DRAMA. IN HIS SEN- IOR YEAR AT NEWBERRY COLLEGE, SOUTH CAROLINA, HE WAS VOTED THE MOST ATHLETIC BOY, WHICH SEEMED LOGICAL SINCE HE PLAYED ON THE FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, AND BASEBALL TEAMS. HE ALSO PARTICIPATED IN STUDENT GOVERNMENT, BEING TREASURER OF THE JUNIOR CLASS AND MEM' BER OF THE STUDENT COUNCIL. SINCE COMING TO REDLANDS, MR. WEAVER HAS BEEN AN INSPIRATION TO HIS STUDENTS AND PLAYERS. WELL GROUNDED IN THE FUNDAMENTALS OF MATHEMATICS AND SPORTS, HE HAS BEEN A POWERFUL SHAPING INFLUENCE IN THE LIVES OF THOSE AROUND HIM. IT IS WITH GREAT PLEASURE THAT THE STUDENTS OF THE RHS RANCH DEDICATE THE 1953 MAKIO TO COACH WEAVER IN APPRECIATION OF THE TIME AND EFFORT HE HAS EXPENDED TO MAKE OUR SCHOOL A FINER PLACE TO ATTEND. In the fall they gave the largest amount of money during Slave Day, thus helping the Red Cross in its work. This year's sophomore dance, the Bunny Hop, was one of which the class of 55 can well be proud. Herded by George Roberts, president, Harrison Lightfoot, vice presi' dent, Diane Bandy, secretaryg and 'Donna Carroll, treasurerg the Sophomores have made a good start toward becoming able hands of the R.H.S. The year began for the class of 54 with the ordering of senior sweaters and rings. By winning the can drive, the juniors proved their merit. The annual juniorfsenior prom in May will long be remembered as an exceptional success, and it was only through hours of hard work by many unselfish and devoted class members that this was made possible. At the end of the year, proudly wearing their sweaters of light blue, the junior class is looking forward to next year when they will be veterans and full fledged riders of the open range. 553s ' Qainzgi 1 -J Qna g'A , i ' i Q .I .N V 4 t - f Y , H 41 I r iai, ff. a fl' . ,aff X .r. ff. y f i '?1f '!1 h'. nlA!! l N 'W 2 , RW A R N 'f E5 I I My 5 w 1 A jx 9 x 5 5.4. .ns ,A G sits 9 2 3 X E 'u W 'Y ' I as , X 'Wil' Row 'I Florence Millard, Jack Dietrick, Walter De Blauw, Ed Earhart, Anne Dietrick. She has prodded and teased us through three eventful years. She has joined with us in making this, our final year, a truly fine one. The '53 seniors have been leaders in pep, sports, scholarship, music, drama, and other activities, making this year one of the most succesful ones RHS Ranch has ever seen. The long awaited Senior Week included the ever popular Ditch Day, riotous Senior Assembly, Treasure Hunt, trip to Valley College, fashion show, and, terminating the week, a banquet and dance. Finally came the momentous graduation week. This week hegan with Baccalaureate, the seniors wearing caps and gowns for the first time in many years. Playing excellent ball, they swept through four tourney games, defeating Covina 5523, Pomona 5641, Colton 6561, and Chaffey 67-59. The opening game of CBL proved to be the biggest disappointment of the year for the Terriers. On a last second fortyffive foot shot by Pomona's Cordy Taylor, Redlands went down to defeat 55' 54. Despite their opening loss, Redlands went on to capture second place in CBL and gained the right to enter the CIFfplayoffs. Here Redlands defeated Long Beach Poly, but then lost to mighty Ventura, 5148. The Bees were very tough on their own floor. Ev' ery CBL team that invaded the ranch had to pull the game out of the fire in the last few minutes of play. The team in picking their own outstanding players voted as follows: Sonny Capehart was chosen as captain and the best offensive player, John Janowicz, joe Acosta, and Jim Law were voted the best defensive players. Ed Burba, who was injured during CBL play, was runnerfup for offensive ability. Capehart finished second, and Burba sixth in the scoring for the entire CBL. The Terrier Racket Swingers, under the tutelage of Couch Louis Parque, were greatly handi' capped this year due to the lack of experience in the squad. With the exception of Neal Wall, there were no returning veterans to form a basis for the 1953 team. Despite this, the team faced the strong interfranch competition with courage and determination, making a good showing even in defeat. The team had its main strength in the singles department which featured Neal Wall, Dudley Sipprelle, Gary Brush, Ed Burba, and Charles Stebbins. The Terriers' weakness came in the doubles teams where combinations had to be changed too often in order to arrive at a winning foursome. This proved costly because no two boys were able to play together long enough to benefit from the change. 1 Don Schroedor, Mike Rennie, Ed Burba, Don Deussen, Bob Hannah, Wesley Wilson, Joe Schroedor, Dudley Sipprelle, Jim Bentley. 2 David Achley, Gary Brush, Neal Wall, Richard Donahue, Eddie Paule, Charles Stebbins, Wilson Thompson, David Christen, Mr. Louis Parque, Coach. i'fA.17i5ZQ.,3 ilmf1i: z '2I'H9Xr9fA?Q5'2i3YL,is-3' 1111211 -f!Ww s:Zs1'5eWaT?1t ivW5A' Si::.1Wf52s:s Yi-.f2ss3w5sS ,fiQsS2zYE2EYASsi Charles Stebbins in a backhand shot wocks the ball back to his opponent. Headed this year by Mrs. Frank Robertson, the PTA has enjoyed an unusually successful program. Over 90 per cent enrollment was gained from the membership drive held in the fall. As in previous years, the ranch hands have greatly benefitted from PTA activities. The PTA yearly supplies the Stu' dent Welfare Fund and takes charge of the chuck wagon at Baccalaureate and at the Chepulechi festival. In addition, it contributes to the Frank Aaraujo Scholarship and also to the Mabel Woodbury Scholf arship along with Girls' League. The work of the PTA is ever dedicated to the achievement of harmony on the rangeland and because of its efforts many a wild dogie has been made into a better member of the herd. CUSTODIA S All over the rangeland the cleanliness and beauty of the RHS ranch is happily recognized.
