In its pages are logged the story of a high school in war time. The greatest impact of the war on our school lives has been the def parture of classmates and teachers who have entered the armed forces of the United States. We are proud of these Terriers. Our hopes and prayers go with them: that they may fight a good fight in the true spirit of Red' lands and return safe and soon - victorious. aff 'k 'I' 'A' i' i' Allman, Hubert Dean Anderson, Robert E. It's been a long, fine trip and though it's hard to leave our home port, it is with eagerness and fortitude that we face the voyages of the future. We will long remember the Senior Mix, the Treasure Hunt with its scratches, bee stings, and sunburns and the triumphant uproar when the battered old container of the coveted scroll was discovered by Hale Paxton. Long to live in the minds of the Old Salts of 1943, will be the Banquet, the Sweater Parade with its long, twisting rib' bon of maroon and white proclaiming that B the Seniors were having one of their big BURL sM1TH ClHyS- President There was no need to consult the North Star, for at the helm has been our expert skipper, Burl Smith. Throughout the year the Senior activities have been treated with impartiality, efficiency, and have been carefully arranged. The ofhcers, Yeoman Margaret Perry, First Mate john Foy, and Paymaster Bill Gerber, have been great com' manding officers and we know that any action in which they particif pate will be short and for the good of the common Victory we are confident of winning. Farewell and anchors aweigh! jOHN FOY MARGARET PERRY BILL GERBER ViCC'lJl'CSiLlCl1I Secretary Treasurer 8 of 1943 HALE PAXTON and VIRGINIA DAVIS Selected by fellow seniors as outstanding members of the class Here are some of the Terrier Crew that have made the cruise of 1943 an outstanding one. For three years they have done firstfclass service for their mates and the ship and they'll carry on the tradition after they go ashore. Harwood, President, B. Bates, Vice-President: N. Allman, Secretary, D. Sturtevant, Treasurer An example of determination and drive is the junior class of 1943. The course they charted has proved to be a true one and one that has made Redlands High proud of its loyal and patriotic students. These vigorous underclassmen have contributed largely to the Red Cross Drive. They have taken high' est honors in the War Bonds and Stamps Sales. There are no fears in the minds of the Seniors that the next year will be a line one. The Captain of the junior Class has been Robert Harwood. Under his able leadership and those of his cabinet, Yeoman, Nelda All' man, First Mate Bill Bates, and Paymaster Doris Sturtevant, the voyages of the class have been many and varied. The outstandf ing activity of the year was the ,IuniorfSenf ior Prom. The theme was Springtime and the organization was carried out efficiently and diplomatically. When these seamen take over first watch next year, there is no doubt that all bells will find Nall is well. .mx ' ' ' ' ' ' A m.. . v. . . R I. Ix, .Xnl.IInI, R. jnitilcs, KI. I.um.i. I.. Taylor, President When the 'LUld Salts take to sea, they will leave behind a shipshape crew. Few courses will be as smooth as that of the trim ship R.H.S. when these boots take over the helm. Under the capable command of Ed Taylor, class president, the Sophomores have made a place for them' selves in the history of our Alma Mater. Enthusiasm is the password in the code of these lively youngsters. S. B. President Thru Troubled Seas Skipper Ronnie Romero has kept the R. H.S. Terrier on the course this year through rough water and smooth. Working under handicaps, Commissioner of Maneuvers Hale Paxton managed to keep Terrier teams on the field to fight for our ship. Although there were priorities on all materials and labor was scarce, Rachael Dole came through with the Log, and Pat Adams will not only be ref membered as Editor of the Hohachi, but also as the organizer of a swell dance and a su' perb variety show. Starting the year with Virginia Davis as Commissioner of Activities and ending it with Marilyn Monroe, we will have to hand it to both of them for doing a good job. Dick Butler's job it was to keep the money jing' ling in the coffers of the Terrier-a tough job well done. The voice of that bewitching brunette, Pat Davis, was often heard in the auditorium for she was Yeoman on the Terrier, and kept us up to the minutes. Some of the groups were training units for those going into war activity after leaving schoolg others gave students an op' portunity to work right now on important war projects, such as the Victory Garden, the scrap drive, and the bond sales program. i ' 4, L All Out For Victory A number of the Victory Corps units are shown on this page. This was the electrifying news flashed to Redlands on April 19 from New Crleans. The occasion was the national finals of the American Legion Oratorical Contest. Four high school stu' dent speakers, selected from hundreds of contestants from the entire United States, met at New Orleans to present their original speeches on the Conf stitution. Burl was voted as second best in the country! Forging steadily through the gruelling competition of contests in school, county, area, state, Far West and Southwestern Region, and finals, improving as he went, the speaker from Redlands finished just one point behind the winner. This contest has made this an outstanding year for the speech department in Redlands schools. Masque and Gavel Masque and Gavel has carried on their program this year, though it was necessarily restricted somewhat by transportation limitations. The tra' ditional trip to the Pasadena Playhouse had to be abandoned because of transportation. In midfyear there was a change of sponsors: Mr. Smith leaving for the Marines, and Miss Armstrong took over. Through it all Leland Purvis has kept the meetings active and the membership intact. Executive oflicer Ralph Dearden's job it was to steer the craft through a year that pref sented many problems to the boys at Red' lands. Several programs were arranged with speakers representing the various armed forces who gave much helpful information to the prospective enlistees and selectees. The League also assisted in the organization of harvest crews to take part in the local Land Army when harvesting became critical. In addition there was the usual entertainment of boxing matches and games. BOYS' LEAGUE S. Sturtevant, Secretary, A. Van Leuven, Vice-President R. The biggest blow was the leaving of Miss Clive J. Smith, the faculty sponsor. Luckily, Mrs. Luckenbill was there to take over. Because is was impossible to sell the usual chocolate eclairs, the girls had a hard time making the pledged one hundred and tvventyffive dollars which will give some girl a scholf arship to the University of Redlands. However, members are determined to go some place on their ditch day in the second semester, even if they have to walk. During the meetings the club has heard some timely and worthwhile lectures. Midfsemester, the president, Elam Anderson, left high school to go to the University, and Herman Thornton took his place. Ed Durant also graduated midfterm. As Coach Perkins has so often said, The season will he successful if we heat Berdoof' Redlands fans saw the mighty Terrier team overwhelm the Red Birds in an exciting game they controlled from beginning to end. 18 to 0 tells the story. The rifled passes of Ronnie Romero were a feature of the game, as was the grand defensive play of Hale Paxton. The Terriers startled San Bernardino's veteran five with first half uprising and coasted to 30 to 27 in the CBL. opener. They went through a hard season sweep' ing all oposition before them up to the last game of the season - a heart' breaker lost to Pomona. Still rolling along on the momentum of four consecutive wins, the cocky Redlands Boots fooled away the first half at Pomona, allowing the redfhot Devilettes to obtain a bewildering 11 to 3 lead at the midfway point. Spurred by the realization that they were trailing the serious Imps 17 to7 at the close of the third period, the Terriers rallied in the fourth quarter. Peckham, Davis, Soto,Sturtevant, and Reynolds immediately burst forth in a flurry of baskets that drew them abreast the Pomonans, only to see the sole Devilette basket of the period swish through to provide the 19 to 17 Terrier defeat. This was the only blot on an otherwise spotless record and the championship. As it was, Redlands was the cofleader with Pomona. Coach Rebd was proud of the Sophs and was exceedingly happy as he handed out gold basketballs to the team in assembly at the end of the sea' son. At the same time he announced honors brought to Redlands by Peck' ham and Soto, who were highfplacers in the league in the free throw division. Tennis is so popular it is a major sport for the girls. Enthusiasts 'ere on the courts every period of the day. Even on rainy days iey talked tennis, although they were supposed to he taking part 1 tuinhling, gymnastics, and other activities that could he held in ie gym. Tenni 1 ww ' 1 Volley Ball The most popular net sport of the hitch is volley hall. At the end of the season the G.A.A. played the dilllercnt class teams, with the G.A.A. usually winning. The U.S.S. Bulldog sent her star athletes down to seut' tle our Terrier crew. The junior High and High School teachers were challenged also during the season. 79 Hockey Hockey is justly popular as a field sport during the year. Def manding much drive and stamina, it appeals to the true athletes among the girls and makes an interesting game to watch. By ob' serving the size of the sticks held by the two girls in the bottom picture, you can imagine what happens when some hapless girl ac' cidently gets in the way. That's the reason for the shin guards. When play is made difficult or impossible because of the weather the girls retire to the gym and play table tennis or volley ball, or take part in gymnastics or tumbling. SO Badminton The second period class were the specif alists in hadminton this year. The sport was so popular that it was with reluctance that the juniors and seniors tore themselves away two days a week for their special instruction in first aid and home nursing. Only the lucky sophies had play five days a week. Swimming In a school so outstanding in swimming competition as Redlands, it is only natural that the girls should take up the sport in an organized way this year. Two evenings a week the girls went swimming in the Y pool, with an hour of instruction on Wetl' nesday evenings from Mrs. Ann Farrell. Plans are to continue this sport next year. In aslcet Ball Baskethall is another of those fast games which taxes a refereels patience and wind. The girls just clon't hear the whistle. Some clay it would he interesting to see a game with the hoys-if the hoys could he per' suaclctl to risk their prestige. The girls will need a little eoaxing, as they are sure they can win. Home Nursing and First Aid Q .mx The girls have been challenged this year to do what they could to prepare for their parts in the world at war. Care for the sick and the injured are important in women's work, and these are taken care of in the training in Home Nursing and First Aid. HOME NURSING Home Nursing training has been given to all senior girls two days a week this year by Mrs. Smith, a Red Cross nurse. The girls realize the importance of this training, now that so many doctors and nurses have left Redlands for the services. For many girls, the course has stimulated an interest in nursing as a career after they finish school. FIRST AID First Aid was taught to all junior girls this year by Mrs, Luckenbill. Two days each week were devoted to this study. Any disaster that may come to Redlands will certainly be lightened by the skillful work of these many girls trained in iirst aid. 83 I 'Q 412, in V' 1 -.2 -f :ZS- . JJ? . .,., .
