It is important for us to know and understand how science will affect our lives, and how we, as seniors, will fit into this period. Because of the International Geophysical Year's basic importance to everyone, especially to us as future career men and women, we chose to pattern our yearbook after some of the facets of IGY. The International Geophysical Year is an eighteen month period which began July 1, 1957 and will end December 31, 1958. Thousands of scientists from many nations are working together in the hope of gaining more knowledge about the earth and universe. Specialists in many fields will probe into the depths of the oceans, inner structure of sheets of polar ice, and investigate the interior of the earth itself. It is hoped that through co-operative learning the completion of the Geophysical Year may bring peaceful living throughout the world. ln order to progress scientifically we will have to progress toward peace. It is also hoped that space travel may soon be possible as a result of the studies on satellites, gravity, weather, and interplanetary rockets. The teaching of the principles of IGY is not iust the science department's iob. lt should be the aim of all tecgchers and educational organizations alike. We hope our theme proves to be both interiesting and enlightening to everyone who reads the Blazer. . 5 1 Ei 'f ,mi ......,, -MH f' 2 4474 ,, 5 A fly , I K , C ..,, up ,W .W ..,, , 5 - if nj . 2 ,, ' . -7 ' ,, ' ?ff r0'7,4.1 sf' . Every organization needs a patient person from whom to seek advice and guidance. It needs a person with sufficient experience to anticipate mistakes, but also with sufficient strength to overcome them if they do happen. lt needs a man who so enioys his work that he never tires of it, who respects tradition yet hasthe courage to attempt new things. The BLAZER staff sees such a man in Mr. Richard Whitman. He possesses all the qualities to act as our sponsor, yet he is never too busy with the many hours of BLAZER work, extending even from school to home, to act as our friend. We take very great pleasure in dedicating this book to him. X X,XX,,wtE .Qi I -X gs . tx A . Nw. X Qi 'fit X Xsssi N v 9 .- fs - X 6 A X me 4 NX Q... SENIOR PLAY f News Ll ,' ,f Q , X -1 ,. 11, E311 is ffi5fX IDT When Mr. White announced that this year's senior play would be Midsummer Night's Dream , many were dubious that it would go over and that it would be done well. Perhaps due to the publicity, which was exceptional this year, there was a near sellout each night. The audience enioyecl the play immensely and applauded, and applauded, and applauded. Puck fplayed by Jim Edwardsj, the little elf, received nothing but praise. His leaps and turns and iumps added sparkle to the play. The audience wondered if Hermia fplayed by Patt Lairdj would ever come out alive with all her tumbles. Helena fplayed by Lynne Jillson and Ellen Piercy alter- natelyj completely confused Demetrius fplayed by Jim Nettej and Lysander fplayed by Gregg Pagei. Bottom Cplayed by Neil Bierbowerj kept the audience laughing with each line. The play was the result of the combined efforts of three departments. Mr. White directed the whole production. Mrs. Stevens and Mr. Fenby directed the dancing and music re- spectively. One could not help but be proud while watching the play. The whole cast did an excellent job. Congratulations to the June, 1958 Graduating Class for a wonderful senior play. nv' , i I I f ,f POLITICAL RALLY SPEAKERS X li is Political Rally speakers deliver a campaign speech each .c. semester supporting their chosen candidate running for 3 5 Q. Suddenly it's graduation time and high school days draw to a close. Only yesterday you were freshies - young innocents just out of elementary grades - wondering what high school might hold for you. Now you know! I hope as you look back over the past four years that you find little to regret and much for which to be thankful. I hope the lessons you learned here will benefit you greatly in your future life whether you aspire to further education or move immediately into the world of work. The high school age is one of rapid growth. During your years at Redford you matured physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. You arrived a child, you depart an adult and from here on you must expect to be treated as an adult - as one completely responsible for his own actions. You live in an age that challenges humanity. Great changes are taking place. Frontiers of human knowledge and achievement are being rolled back at an astounding pace. Such accelerated development poses many problems. The future of the human race - and of our nation - depends upon our being in the vanguard of this race for new knowledge and on our ability to cope successfully with the staggering problems raised. Before long your generation must face this challenge. I have faith in your ability to discharge this obligation with honor. Now you must leave us. Redford has enjoyed your stay and will miss you. l'm sure you will never forget Redford. Keep this copy of the BLAZER - it will bring back many happy memories. Return and visit us whenever you can. You will always be welcome. Sincerely yours, CHARLES J. WOLFE, Principal 28 ,dw Mr. Fred D. Leonhard, Assistant Principal COUNSELORS GIRLS' Miss Marian Devine Miss Ellen Egan COUNSELORS fL.' THIS WORLD What comes to our mind when we hear the word teacher? Well, that grim bespectacled figure with ruler in hand that typified a teacher so often in the past has changed. Listen to the type of person we find a teacher to be. Help is the word that explains the most in the composition of a teacher. He helps us in our schoolwork and in solving our problems, even as to whom to date. He encourages our ideas and activities, perhaps sug- gesting mild revisions to keep them in good taste. The one who is always the most fun when participating in outside activities is our teacher. To sum it all up, he's a swell guy. We value his friendship and respect him as we do our parents. Redford's football team, under the direction of coaches Larimore and Gvozdich, got off to an excellent start defeating Chadsey 31-0. A 70 yard sprint by Don Zielinski and a 40 yard run by Charlie Brown highlighted the game. The U. of D. game, scheduled the following week, was cancelled on account of a flu epidemic. The Huskies easily defeated Cass, 33-7. Redford was given an unexpected battle by Mackenzie, Redford winning T2-7. In that game, Don Zielinski made both touchdowns, one on a pass from John Gutowsky and the other on a 17 yard run off tackle. Due to adverse weather, the Cooley game was called off. Against Cody, Don Zielinski made three touchdowns, John Gutowsky two, and Bill Dougall one. Redford downed them 35-20. The following week Redford met Western. The winner of this game would be tied with Cooley for the West Side Championship. After blocking a punt, Western took an early 6-0 lead. However, Redford bounded back with a twenty yard touchdown run by John Gutowsky. A few minutes later John Gutowsky threw a quick pass to John Kowalik to put Redford out in front T2-6. Redford's defense held the lead through the second half, giving us a victory over Western. Redford and Cooley were co-champions of the West Side, but Redford was selected to represent the West Side in the city championship game. The Huskies met a fired up team at Briggs Stadium. Southeastern, using a variety of unusual plays, got two quick touchdowns in the first quarter. Redford scored one touchdown in the second half, but Southeastern retaliated with two more touchdowns and a safety to defeat Redford 28-7. Redford had a most successful season this year, tying for the West Side Championship and taking runner-up spot in the Metropolitan League. Halfback John Gutowsky and guard Steve Vollmer were named to the All City Team. We should be proud of our team and cheer them on to victory next year. Louis Molnar, with a winning time of 11:12, led Redford in its first meet, dumping Cass 18-53. The next week it was Louis Molnar first again as the thinclads whipped Mackenzie 17-25. Redford's only loss was to Cody 35-20. However, Redford, behind the fine running of Barrie Armstrong, bounced back to defeat Northwestern 24-35. ln cross country, the positions of the first five finishing from each team are added to give the score. The team with the lowest score wins. ln the West Side Finals, Redford came in first with 29 points. Louis Molnar hnished first, Barrie Armstrong second, Cameron Howie seventh, Lionel Hurd ninth, and Hank Lenox tenth. Redford placed second to Denby in the City Finals with 63 points. Louis Molnar came in fourth, Barrie Armstrong sixth, and Cameron Howie eleventh. All three won all-city honors. With three returning all-city men, and some promising runners from the freshman team, Redford should have another suc- cessful season next year. FLIGHTY .W How can you tell who's a freshman? You can tell a freshman by the bewildered look on his face as he runs from Room 192 all the way around to 126, by the look of despair as he struggles and struggles to get that locker open, by the look of pain as he carries home a huge pile of books, by the look of hopelessness half way through mid-terms, and by the look of Triumph when he finds that he passed all grades and is now a 9A. Sometimes it's not the look that gives him away but his innocent in E . words, Locker pass, what locker pass? Is there anything I can do for you, Miss '? And the fool-proof way to pick out a 9A on the first day of any term is to hear him yell at a 98, Freshie! But being a freshman is wonderful, and to look back on the mistakes we made is even better.
