Text from Pages 1 - 60 of the 1947 volume:

A dream. A plan! A reality!! Years of work advanced the idea of the unique Redford Seal from the first stage of its development to the last. The efforts of many past Redfordites whose names will never be remembered are immortalized in many of the special features which they contributed. For the first time, the challenging motto That I May Serve inscribed on the Seal, becomes the official pass- word, the sacred obligation of a Redford graduating class, the Class of January 1947, and of the many classes that will come after it. How fitting a motto to have as we leave school and play our part in constructing a world of peace! The Seal itself has a significant meaning. The impressive owl, portraying wisdom, which rests against the shield can be seen any morning as you enter the new building and gaze up at the crest surmounting the tall columns in the front edifice. The flaming torch on the Seal represents the never-ending flow of wisdom. Thus-R.H.S. could be called the owl and its thousands of students, the torch which goes forth carrying wisdom to the far corners of the earth. Dick Yocum, who designed the cover of the Yearbook, and Roy Axford, who submitted the final drawings for ap- proval by the faculty committee, deserve special recogni- tion for their important part in bringing the undertaking to its final stages. The original sketch was created by Richard Sprague, Redford graduate, now serving in the Army in Germany. lt has been a dream fulfilledp teachers and students alike have made it possible. ln the years to come as we look back at our class rings and school an- nuals, we will relive the pride of being the first class to graduate under the official watchword of the Redford High School Seal. 1184 . jha, Uufponf, f 1.5, A N P f ,oe -X if I nf k nf- ' NJ k! ,I f I Q f -'fo' . .1-5 F K, r -R' 1 no P , 7947 P ,Y P' P R Nu-0' -' i X N W4-fy ' A i riff! Where there is hatred, let me sow love: where there is injury, pardon: where there is doubt, faith, where there is despair, hope: where there is darkness, light: and where there is sadness, ioy. Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to con- sole, to be understood as to understand: to be loved as to love, for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. St. Francis of Assisi The world is cold, and bitter winds with raging force blow over the surface of the earth this January of 1947. There are months ahead in which we must battle against opposing forces with every facility at our command, until finally we emerge triumphant and become masters of the forces of evil. Spring will come and new buds and sprouts of life will break through the hard earth as the warm and productive summer months approach. Nature rules its elements, but human nature is dominated by man, who has within his power the ability to govern his own actions and influence others, thus bringing about his bet- terment or destruction. The motives of a nation reflect the fundamental characteristics of its people. Unless peace and tolerance are embedded deep within the hearts of the individual people of a country, no peace will be found among the peoples of different countries. For, as a. lone pebble cast upon the water causes ever widening ripples to form, so also shall peace instilled within our hearts radiate to others. Then and only then, shall we be ful- filling the obligation of our generation and putting into practice the desire and necessity expressed in our class motto, That I May Serve . We've laughed, worked, and shared mutual problems together for the past four years. Now we must part. Physically the coming years will separate us, but mentally we shall always remain the class of January '47 who strove for excellence in scholarship, athletics, and moral standards. This book is dedicated to the Senior Class that all their memories of Redford High School may remain as vivid and lasting as they seemed on graduation day. Though small in numbers, about 200, you have many outstanding students both in scholarship and in other school activities. Your officers and committees have done their work quickly and well. We certainly are going to miss you. Your last year and a half here has been a, transitional period-not only in your lives but in the life of our nation as a whole and in the affairs of all nations as they have been-trying to work out a world organization, which has taken the name of United Nations . During your first two and a half years of,high school you lived amid the excitement, horror, and frenzy of a terrible war. During the last year and a half, you experi- enced the supreme joy of victory. , K Since V-J Day you have had to adjust your emotions, impulses, and daily living to sudden changes, social, political, and financial, with all the attending problems. You have done mighty well, I think. As you are leav- ing our great school, you will carry with you many happy memories, for example, the great playing of our splendid football team, sparked by the .dazzling runs of Gardner Barnstead. The good times here will stand out most vividly as the years pass but you must not, we hope will not, forget your friends, us your teachers. You have endeared yourselves to us and we want you to remember us kindly, and perhaps, somewhat gratefully. You are the first class to use the school seal or emblem on your Senior Outpost. You, as a group, have exemplified the motto Ut Prosim - That I May Serve . A I cannot wish greater things for you than to hope that in the new world that is forming, you will put into practice by supporting all the worthwhile things in your community, your state, and your world. The world needs youth, strength, and unselfishness. Members of the Class of January 1947, great things are ahead of you. Serve God and your fellow men. Do not forget us for we are proud of you. Lewis or a heavy, dangerous fog could stop the production of this term's Senior Play. Despite the last-minute change in dates to Thursday and Friday evenings, December 5 and 6, the budding actors and actresses turned out a fine per- formance and were enthusiastically received by their audience. They attribute their success to hard work and the excellent direction and patience of Miss Cyretta Morford, dramatic coach. Who's Boss , the three-act- comedy which was presented by the two casts, revealed the turbulent life of an unassuming rich young author, Edgar Tatum. When the curtain rose, poor Edgar was having troubles holding his own against a domineering aunt and two cousins who practically called his house their own, although they were living there only by his good grace. Things changed, however, when Ruth, the pretty secretary, arrived and gave Edgar the moral courage to stand up for his rights . Although Elsie, the problem-sister, gave Edgar another worry when she triea to run oft and marry the villain, the difficulties were ironed out and Edgar confessed his love to Ruth who had made a man of him. Being an international organization, the high standards set for entrance are uniform in countries all over the world. Membership is open to outstanding students of the IIA, 'l2B, and l2A grades. Scholarship is reckoned on the point system: A is worth five points, B, threep and C, one. Marks are counted from the 9B, and a final E in any academic subject disqualifies the candidate. Students in the IIA need IOO points for membership, in the l2B, 108, and in the l2A, 'Il2, Mr. Robert Foster is chairman of the faculty committee on membership, and as such is responsible to Washington for the decisions made. The semi-annual breakfast, which is the only meeting held during the term by the Society, was January 7. Redford didn't win the West Side football championship this year, but they came iust about as close as any second place team possibly can. The Huskies finished the season with five victories, and one loss in league play, besides o non-league 19 to 0 accomplishment over Western. Cooley, Redford's historical rival, won all their games, besting the Huskies for the top ranking on the West Side by the hair-width margin of one game. It was on an ill-fated October afternoon, under a broiling sun in U. of D. Stadium that Cooley dealt the ominous blow which ultimately decided who was to be champion on the West Side of the Metropolitan League. That day Cooley downed Redford T3 to O. From then on, neither team lost a game. But the Huskies' hopes of winning the crown still glimmered late in the season. Redford defeated previously unbeaten U. of D. 21 to 13 one week before the regular season officially ended. Seven days later the Cubs were scheduled to face Cooley. Every Redford follower's spirit rose, hopes were that U. of D. might upset Cooley and throw the West Side championship race into chaos. A three-way tie would have resulted with a U. of D. victory. But the spirits that had risen so fast, plunged much more rapidly, and hopes disintegrated as U. of D. fell to the favored Cardinals. However, Redford doesn't have to take a back seat by any manner of means. They were a great bunch of fellows. They fought hard for what they earned, and second place is an admirable position in any man's league or language. At the start of the year, the Huskies had a green line. By the end of the season, it exhibited a brand of ball similar to any veteran prep forward wall. Of course, the galaxy of stars in the backfield was the outstanding spot on the team. Dave Wilcox showed unusual strategic ability at directing the team from his quarterback position. Dave's educated right toe converted 20 out of 24 extra-point attempts through- out the season. Right-half was capably filled by Ronnie Burks, who is always a threat on offense as well as a fine defensive player. Gordon Cronk dealt out many bruises to opposing linemen on his rocking drives from his fullback slot. And now the spotlight shines on the apple in the eye of any high school coach , Gardner Barnsteacl, the squad's bril- liant all-city left halfback. Gardner scored i2 times during the season and was always a terror in an open field. His kicking and passing made him a triple threat any time he was on the field. Uwwitq. Jzwtlmll. V 2 a 3 S 6001211- Any hopes Redford had of a West Side championship were all but thwart- ed on the opening day of the season when the Huskies fell, 13 to 0, to their time-proven nemesis, Cooley. The Car- dinals went on to cop the West Side, Metropolitan League, and City titles. Redford, crippled by the loss of key men in the lineup, was worn down by the physically perfect Cardinals, and the difference in physical condition was the deciding factor. Pictured is a Cooley fumble recovered by an alert Redford lineman. fuzfaal, Central was the first to feel the wake of the thundering Husky herd after Redford reconciled itself to the Cooley loss. Gardner Barnstead accounted for 'I8 points in the Huskies' 35 to O vic- tory. Gordon Cronk and Glen Dreis- bach also tallied in the game. On all five of the extra points, Dave Wilcox converted successfully. Redford's line pushed the Central forward wall back all afternoon, opening wide holes which the fleet- footed Husky backfield used to ad- vantage. Dreisbach closes in on a Central back in the photo. Ctfilbwz, 6U'Juqh.L Wilbur Wright, continuous cellar- dweller on the West Side, managed to score once-and that against third stringers-as the Huskies buried the Pilots, 41 to 6. Barnstead again scored three touch- downs, on iaunts of 65, 27, and four yards. Cronk, Wilcox, and Ray Parker also scorecl. Wilcox kicked five extra points. Throughout the major portion of the game, Coach Hoinacki experimented with the second and third string squads who for the main held their own. Wlmfhwmfmn, Next on the list of Redford triumphs was a plucky Northwestern eleven who put up a stubborn fight before yield- ing, 14 to O. Play was very close in the first half and Redford was held scoreless until their last play from scrimmage before intermission when Barnstead threw a desperation pass from the Redford 40 to Parker on the Colt nine. Parker then scampered over the goal-line un- molested. Barnstead ran 60 yards for the other score. The start of his long run is pictured. fzcvg. co. U. of D., previously undefeated, suf- fered their first loss of the season when Redford upset the Cubs 21 to 13. This drew the Huskies into a two- way tie for second with U. of D. but the Cubs were stopped 14 to 0 by Cooley the following week, thus clinch- ing the West Side crown for the Car- dinals. U. of D. scored first against Red- ford, but the Huskies retaliated with two quick touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 14 to 6 halftime lead. Redford built up a 21 to 6 mar- gin before U. of D. scored when the game was officially over. A penalty on the final play of the day, allowed the Cubs an extra play and they clicked on a pass. 319, Mackenzie's disappointing Stags were a poor match for Redford as the Huskies trampled them, 34 to O, on the schools' last day of the foot- ball year. The game was played in ankle deep mud but Redford stymied the Stag defense by mixing a brutal run- ning attack with an occasional pass. ln spite of the weather and slippery condition of the ball, the passing was uncannily accurate. Barnstead counted twice, Cronk once, Parker once on a pass, and Wilcox once on an intercepted aerial. Wilcox can be seen in the snapshot as the ball leaves his toe on one of his numerous extra point tries. This one was good, as usual. 9, J1wfbalL ROW l: Thorpe Lichtenberg, Ross Sage, John Buck, Ted Marks, Jack D' ks , P l Sh k' , At C D S ' M'lt K' h ROW - ' Kremidas, Ken. lrey, Jar:k.Winans, Allan O'ke, Sorkes Missakian, Elmer :Vex Jeillx' Cardylniouisr LeTL:J,iJrneglJ, CJl1ra':3eirlStahu'l,irg, Vllgrfeln Kruger.2'ROW 3: Alfred Burris.
