Published by the 12A students at Redford High School, Detroit, Mic Portraits and group photos by Craine Studios Brophy-Salisbury Co., engravers Ann Arbor Press, printers x x r lf higan Cuurlvsy of North American Aviation Inc To the crew of Redford's own bomber, we, the class of January '45, proudly dedicate this Outpost. How thrilled we were to learn that our bond sales during the Fourth War Loan had enabled the War Department to buy a 'Mitchell B-25 in our name! Witll what awe we watched as a great silver planc, like Redford's own, circled Sawyer field last May, its wings glinting in the spring sunshine I This fall we learned that our ship, now called by its pilot's nick- name, JAPIE, had blazed a path of glory for herself in the Southwest Pacific. A letter from the co-pilot introduced her valiant crew, who, he said, wished to know all about Redford High. Here then is the answer: our school in picture and story. We extend to the gallant crew our fervent wishes for their safety, and the hope that they may Hy our .IAPIE to Victory. Since Sep- tember the glee clubs, bands, and orchestras have presented numerous programs at school and before outside organizations. Featured at the annual fall concert in November were baritone Bob Hundg pianists Joanne Kelley and Bob Thompsong the boys, quartet, and the girls' sextette. Seven hundred voices sang an impressive finale. Outside engagements included appearances before tl1e Rotary Club at the Statler Hotel, in a joint program with Cooley in the latter's auditorium on United Nations Night, before the Rosedale Park Civic Association, and with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at a Young People's Concert in the Masonic Temple. No survey of the music department would be complete without mention of the carols sung by a mixed chorus in tl1e halls on the last day before the winter vacation. For all too brief a period, classroom doors are opened, talking ceases, and the spirit of Christmas reigns undisputed in Redford High. 6'We hereby highly resolve that these honored dead shall not have died in vaini' Donald Beal Gordon Brown Donald Bush Axel Dahlin William Elandt Hewitt Fike James B. On a cold Sunday morning at the begin- ning of the term, the sponsor and editors of the yearbook visited the offices of Brophy- Salisbury, engravers, to get new ideas for the yearbook. At this meeting the costs of different engraving processes were discussed, and careful consideration was given to the problem of avoiding a rise in the price of the hook. It is interesting to note that it was on the trip home from Brophy's that the idea of senior hats was evolved. The result was the now familiar gray Eton cap with the jaunly red '445 on it. 42 ORCHESTRA BACK ROW: Shirley Schmanke. Lorraine Wolos, Joann Utley, Thomas Richey. All the members of the quartet are graduating this June, as are several of the girls from the double sextet. These organizations were featured in the Spring Con- cert. Also a highlight of the Concert was the huale, the words of which were written by Mr. C. H. Blanchard. A novel feature was the choral speaking with which Mr. Love, following the modern trend, concluded his original number, America, Land That We Low. From one corner comes the sharp clink of a loomg here is a group of students critically appraising clay models ready for the kiln, those sprawled figures have not escaped from the gym, but are wrest- K ling with the problem of 1 painting a 53-foot sign in a 40-foot room, while the reg- ular class is easily identified as all those pupils whose eyes dart from drawing- board to model and back again. This semester, school and community projects have taken many forms: the making of favors Csee op- posite pagel and place cards for the holiday trays of hospitalized men of the Armed Forces, together with original Christmas cards for their personal use, posters for the Disabled American Veterans, the Ameri- can Legion, and the school's numberless patriotic drives, the furthering of intercultural relations, espe- cially with China, to say nothing of housing and city planning. In the pursuance of these activities, the pupils must not neglect their course of study. Although it's sometimes inconceivable, the art instructors manage to squeeze in basic painting, drawing, and handcrafts, be- sides directing the thousand and one services the versa- tile artists perform for the Outpost and the yearbook. In answer to a question often asked of art instruc- tors Mrs. Irene Parker says, '4Our program provides for the art needs of the average student with no special skill as well as for those with definite talent. Tl1e art courses offer opportunities for the development of leisure time hobbies, for pleasant experience in the understanding of the many art needs of the school, home, and communityg and for training in special skills. Another three-ring cir- cus which flourishes, winter and summer, is the crafts center of the art depart- ment, located in the twilit basement of the old build- ing. Here prize-winning modern jewelry is fash- ioned, and leather and metal goods are made. There are even facilities I for the repair of these arti- l cles! Work is done on rings, belts, buckles, ash trays, and even coffee pots, to mention only a few things. Sandals can be resoled, beads restrung, and safety catches replaced. Annual sales of hand-made objects of art provide money for equipment and mate- rials. aff you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs might well be the slogan of both instructors and pupils in this very active department. a .A izrdf- QM L Q X Www ,gif LAWS Bwnulms I up on us 'Haiku over' Dagwoocl 5- Lli.l-F7161-l4't6t6!'l'! pak. BREAKFAST AND REQUIREMENTS Students in the HA, 12B, and 12A who have the requisite number of honor points are selected by a facul- ty committee to become members of the National Honor Society. To receive this recognition, a student must also show qualities of service, character, and leadership. It is estimated that the gold pin, insignia of the Society, is awarded to fewer than two per cent of Redford students. At the annual breakfast the Society greeted its new members and elected officers. Peter Dietrich is the new president, Marilyn Strohm, vice-president, and Bruce Wyhle, secretary.
