BASKETBALL SUMMARY With basketball practice starting early in November, our hopes were fairly bright Although we missed three members of our squad from last year who were Lee Snyder, Dwight Wgideman and Jerald Galvin we filled in their places with three Freshmen Our hopes were then set back to their lowest ebb caused by the burning of the gym and hall It was thought that basketball would have to be discontinued but arrangements were made for practicing at Ashton once a week small amount of practice was also done in the basement of the schoolhouse The team entered the Sunshine Tournament which was played on January Z9 30 31 and the District Tournament which was played February 25 26 Z7 The Athol B s played Tulare on January 13 and were defeated by a score of twenty six to seven Vincent Jungwirth was Captain during the 47 and 48 season and played some outstanding ball He was picked by the coaches at the Sunshine Tournament as being one of the ten most valuable men along with others from various teams The schedule for the season was as follows November December December December January January The NAME Jungwirth Groft Weideman Burton Larsen Thares Grohs 1947 1947 1947 1947 1948 1948 Mellette Northvllle Mellette Fr ankf or t A shton Athol Town Team January January January January February 3 February 1948 1948 1948 1948 1948 1948 Redfield Tulare Athol Town Team Mellette Warner Cresbard following is a scoring summary for the year FIELD GOALS FREE THROWS ATHOL GRADE TEAM The Athol grade team showed many prospects during the basketball season of 1947 48 They practiced at Ashton with the high school but this arnount of practice fell considerably short of what they should have had The players were John Kzglzr forward Duane Weideman forward, Charles Badger, forward Jarnes Manning, centerg Donald Burton, guard and James Reed, guard The name chosen for the team was the Athol Darts The schedule for the season was as follows December 12, 1947 January 25, 1948 January Z6 1948 The NAME Kegler Weideman Badger Manning Burton Reed following Mellette February 3 1948 Warner Ashton February 13, 1948.
