FRESHMAN INITIATION With the rattle of a dog chain, a swing of a pitchfork, and the hula hu.la dance, our Freshman Initiation started off with a bang during September, 1947 Taking as their theme, Make Hay While the Sm Shines , David Burton and Shirley Wise, our little twins came attired as hula dancers David, who received his complexion from Lady Esther had a lovely rose in his beautiful black curls Shorts and tennis shoes completed his outfit Shirley, her cornsilk colted pig tails waving in the breeze, teetered unsteadily on high heels three inches off the ground They carried a covered basket which when further investigated was found to contain six hard boiled eggs By the way, does anyone know the name of the beach where Ioan Shantz and Rolland Grohs were stranded? Ioan, a candidate for the title, Miss America wore a broad smile a bathing suit, and high heels and waved a beer bottle Rolland who wore bathing trunks was busily engaged in fishing Daryl Weideman must have been afraid that he rnight lose some sleep that night He wore a night gown borrowed from his elder sister and carried an alarm clock his feet were shoved into white sandals occasionally Duane Larsen gave a touching protrayal of a young mother His dress was the latest style it was red trimmed wlth white His costume was completed by a sky scraper hat He gently chided his baby doll when it made too much noise However the baby spent most of the day riding to and from classes in it s stroller Andrew Thares with his petite feet encased in number twelve overshoes looked charming ln a girl s sundress He must have thought it would rain because he put his bathing cap on His doll was lolled to sleep by the squeeking of its buggy s Arlene Larsen after shooting a big steer at her brother in law s ranch tied one of its bones to her leg by way of a three yard dog chain Her brother s over alls were slightly large so she wore them backwards to look smaller Her cap and shoes were borrowed from Paul Bunyan Frances Galvin was trying to get the most out of Indian Summer Clad in shorts and a blouse her tan was almost visible The effect was finished with the nestling of a baby bonnet on her golden locks She carried a hot water bottle in case of a sudden chill After a nurnber of stunts were performed by the Freshmen for the upper class men, refreshments were served by the committee Pictures were taken during the day Dur1ng the evening most of the high school attended the Golden Pheasant Fest ival in Aberdeen A good tirne was reported by all CHEERLEADERS Two cheerleaders were elected in the early fall of 1947 to lead the cheering squad durmg the basketball season They were Marilyn Galvin who was cheer leader the year before and Ioan Shantz, a Freshman who showed possibilities They wore red skirts with red and gray jackets Many new yells were introduced during the year and much time was spent practicing them Due to the fact that all the games were away from home many difficulties were encountered in getting the girls together and finding them a ride to the game Taking this into consideration everyone agrees that they did a very good job wheels.
