School memories and associations HISTORY OF THE ATHOL COMMUNITY When my grandparents carne to South Dakota in 1885, Athol was a boomtown. It consisted of two big hotels, one was where the hall was before it burned, a hardware store, a saloon post office harness shop, two livery barns one was where Lloyd Kegler built his house, a lumber yard that was run by Frank Booth's father two elevators, a drugstore two general stores a shoe shop a blacksmith shop, a brewery where Roy Brown now lives, and a barber shop The population is estirnated to have been five thousand people The town was supposed to have been built a mile north of where :lt now stands and it was called Myrtle City because the first baby born in the settlement was named Myrtle It got its name Athol from an English train conductor who first called it that It was the name of a famous armor used by a House of Lords In England., The name stuck and finally it was changed to Athol It was three years after my grandparents came to South Dakota that they had the blizzard of '88 It was the severest ever experienced in this area The storm struck Athol about nine o clock on the morning January twelfth 1888 The pupils had just arrived at school It was a blinding blizzard until three o clock the next morning A teacher, Miss Stansfield who taught the Percival school north of here was frozen to death as she tried to get to Percivals all night They turned their tearn loose tipped the sled upside-down and crawled under it Their fingers and toes were frozen but otherwise they were unhurt Mrs Reed s sister in law and a little boy were caught in a school house west of here They didn t have any fuel but she put a pair of gloves on hirn and kept hirn walking all night Her hands were slightly frozen but fortunately there were no other injuries My grandfather Galvin, and his brother were caught in the blizzard but managed to reach home safely Some of the other early settlers were my grandmother and her brother, John O Connor several Wllhelms, Schwenns, Alvin Grover, Dan McDole who kept a livery barn and hotel Robert and Frank Twiss, and Corbin Ingalls Drs Wood and Edward were also early settlers The first school had only ten grades in it The first teacher was Lotty Witheral who was sixteen years old There was no high school the first few years In 1911 the present school building was built Slnce the boom, the town has slowly disappeared until it consists of only about a fourth of what it did In the beginning there were four passenger trains each day ln tlrne the town will probably disappear altogether Francis Galvin A family who lived south of town had several young men out ln the storm L Q L..N . fax., QH -I 5 l,'f?5,, . 13:5 Zwkqfg -55-53: : f x ,.X - X- 2,9 , f I . - - - M F ' - T f . I SENIOR HISTORY ANCLENT AND MODERN On August 31st 1936 four little first graders Hazel Christiansen Vincent Jungwlrth Helen Hill and Gordon Collins were led by the their znothers to begin their first twelve years of school Of the group only two were left at the tirne of the eighth grade graduation They were Hazel Christiansen and Vincent Jungwirth With these two graduates Ethyl Grohs, who attended grade school t Zell South Dakota was added when they entered their first year of high school in Sept ember 1943 Due to the fact that the Athol School was not opened during 1944 45 the entire high school attended Ashton School was again resumed at Athol in 1945 46 and the same three took their places as Juniors The next year saw the battle drawing to a close and we were indeed happy but as we look back over those twelve struggling years we will think of the fun we ve had and the memories we will cherish SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY The Scrap Iron Lirnited had just pulled into the Grand Central Station at Athol. Denny Hays the depot agent and John William Kegler newly appointed postmaster were on the job A strange man with old clothes, worn out shoes and first but after a while as a few of the old thners carne around they thought they had seen this person some place before After starting a conversation they learned that his name was Vincent Jungwirth who had lived here until the year of his graduation in 1948 They also learned after a long talk that he was a graduate of Yale and had just completed a new invention which would completely revolutionize transport ation The people became very puzzled after they heard this because they wondered why he looked like a hobo They soon received the answer that the patent had not gone throught yet and until it did it would be safer to roam the country looking like a tramp After discussing his past l:lfe he suddenly became very interested in his former classmates of Athol High School Ethyl Grohs and Hazel Christiansen After inquiring he found Hazel is now the wife of a well known railroad ex ecutive and is living in Athol South Dakota a town of about fifty thousand She is a star vocalist in Billy Mitchells Band which is well known throughout the United States She says she keeps very busy minding her five children which include two sets of twins Arnid the rush of the things there was knock at the back door She opened the door and there stood a tramp asking for a handout After looking at him closely she recognized a small pin on his jacket as the pln which Vince had received as President of the Senior Class of 1948 She invited him ln and he ex plalned his invention to her After he had shaved washed and redressed, Hazel suggested that they go see Ethyl who lived on a cattle ranch just a few miles northeast Vince telephoned Jane Ellen Reed who makes baby sitting her business to come and stay with Hazel s children, and they took Hazel s 1968 jet propelled Cadlllac to the ranch In a few minutes they came to the wide-spread ranch, known as the J-E Bar As they drove into the yard two brown eyed little girls came running to meet them. Ethyl and her husband had just driven in from looking at some of the two thousand head of cattle. 'l'hey recognized the car and Hazel. As Ethyl walked ln, she saw Vince happily playing with her two little glrls. She was very surprised and invited them to a steak supper. As they sat together eating, they recalled many memories and thought of all the fun they had had ln their school days. Ioan, a candidate for the title, Miss America wore a broad smile a bathing suit, and high heels and waved a beer bottle Rolland who wore bathing trunks was busily engaged in fishing Daryl Weideman must have been afraid that he rnight lose some sleep that night He wore a night gown borrowed from his elder sister and carried an alarm clock his feet were shoved into white sandals occasionally Duane Larsen gave a touching protrayal of a young mother His dress was the latest style it was red trimmed wlth white His costume was completed by a sky scraper hat He gently chided his baby doll when it made too much noise However the baby spent most of the day riding to and from classes in it s stroller Andrew Thares with his petite feet encased in number twelve overshoes looked charming ln a girl s sundress He must have thought it would rain because he put his bathing cap on His doll was lolled to sleep by the squeeking of its buggy s Arlene Larsen after shooting a big steer at her brother in law s ranch tied one of its bones to her leg by way of a three yard dog chain Her brother s over alls were slightly large so she wore them backwards to look smaller Her cap and shoes were borrowed from Paul Bunyan Frances Galvin was trying to get the most out of Indian Summer Clad in shorts and a blouse her tan was almost visible The effect was finished with the nestling of a baby bonnet on her golden locks She carried a hot water bottle in case of a sudden chill After a nurnber of stunts were performed by the Freshmen for the upper class men, refreshments were served by the committee Pictures were taken during the day Dur1ng the evening most of the high school attended the Golden Pheasant Fest ival in Aberdeen A good tirne was reported by all CHEERLEADERS Two cheerleaders were elected in the early fall of 1947 to lead the cheering squad durmg the basketball season They were Marilyn Galvin who was cheer leader the year before and Ioan Shantz, a Freshman who showed possibilities They wore red skirts with red and gray jackets Many new yells were introduced during the year and much time was spent practicing them Due to the fact that all the games were away from home many difficulties were encountered in getting the girls together and finding them a ride to the game Taking this into consideration everyone agrees that they did a very good job wheels.
