:A ST. MARY OF THE ASSUMPTION. HREDEMPTORIST PARISH New Orleans, Louisiana St. Mary's...First Pastor, Reverend Peter Chakert, C.Ss.R. - 1843. First Church - wooden - built in 1844. Erected for the German speaking people. Corner-stone of present church was laid April 25, 1858. Blessed on June 24, 1860. In 1925 was made an affiliate chapel. ..or chapel of ease to St. Alphonsus Parish. ln 1867 the body of the Servant of God, Father Francis Seelos, C.Ss.R. was placed in Sanctuary. The magnificent altar arrived from Munich in 1874 . . .the windows also in the same year. The tower of St. Mary's, a gem of architecture. . .one bell alone, 4, OOO pounds.
