THIS WAS 1996 the year The Irrsh Channel stood on rts ears and shouted to the world How bout those Rams an these are the memorres of a newsman whose Job rt was to tell em about those Darlrngs from Constance and Iosephrne I remember that hot September day when coach Joe Gallrano mopped hrs brow and let me rn on a secret We aren t gorng to be the league patsy any more for Joe Gallrano thrs was un usual ordrnarrly he was a modest fellow and those trying ten years the better part of whrch hrs Rams spent rn the prep cellar had made Joe cautrous rn those pre season rntervrews but thrs was a new year and a new Gallrano We aren gorng to be the league patsy any more I thought about Gallrano s remark throughout the season when the smarts laughed off Redemptorrst s early season surprrses before the brg games and after the brg games when the Rams had won again The patsy was wrth me rn Crty Park Stadrum that Saturday evenrng when St Aloysrus beat the Rams rn the statrstrc columns but not on the scoreboard when the underdogs from The Channel stunned the Blue Jays and the Cavalrers and the Blue Kmghts and patsy was srttrng on my lap the night Brlly Hays ran from the bench at the opening of the fourth quarter to lead Redemptorrst to IIS frrst vrctory over Holy Cross That spontaneous bonfrre and pep rally rn the school yard after the Cross conquest when the band struck up the martral arr of Don t Grve Up The Shrp and cheers for Gallrano and hrs players bounced off torrst you could feel rt standing there on the frrnge of the Crowd The great V1CI0l'Y OVC! 8 favored Warren Easton Eagle rn the crty playoff the Eagles made the most frrst downs but they drdn t wrn the champronshrp The football banquet rn Lrguorr Hall the stand up and cheer ovatro'r the players gave Srster Mary Caroleen after her strrrrng talk Gallrano s modest phrase thrs rs lrke a dream come true could have sard I told you we weren t gorng to be the league patsy any more but he was rememberrng those long lean and empty years and rn hrs happrest hour he was an humble man lrke Srster Mary Caroleen sard solrd gold In future years Redemptorrst wrll freld better football teams and wrn more champronshrps but those folks rn The Irrsh Channel wrll always look back upon those krds who played rn 56 wrth a specral affectron Hays Moran Mrtts Marchese Gurllot Smrth Powell Doyle Coyle Drmrtry Schmrtt Juneau Sure I ve forgotten some names forgrve me but I won t forget those champron Rams rt s lrke the guy says rn the song Memorres Are Made of Thrs TOM FOX Sportswrrter New Orleans ltem ' H s n n .
