Ray Nl. Ed.. U. of Pittsburgh Supervising Principal of Schools Joseph I. Kata Nl. A., U. of Pittsburgh High School Principal B ILDERS OF F UT RE CITIZENS XVhen we think of our school days. we remember many things, but one of the most important memories we hold in our hearts is that of our faculty. those men and women with whom we spend six hours a day, five days a week. From a single-room school house with only one teacher, New Bethlehem has grown into Redbank Valley High School, a larger school with many rooms and buildings. The faculty. also. has been increased in number until today it totals forty-one. Among these teachers we have found good friends who have helped us in many different ways. just by daily conversation or daily routine, we students have been iniiuenced by them. The teacher's role in the development of an individual is indeed a valu- able one. XVe learn not only by the use of textbooks. but also by observation. YVe are impressed by teachers who live their lives by the rules they teach. and by the faith they show in their students. The all-round development of a student is their aim, and our desire. XVe will always remember our teachers. And we promise to show in our lives some of the qualities they would want us to have. 10 l . . - . A , AND FACULTY TOP ch-ft to right? Xlost of all. he recalls the sports activities that he participated in. The time he ran eighty yards for a touchdown. the time he pinned his opponent in the first period. the time he hit a home run to win the hall game. or the time he was high scorer in basketball are the thoughts of the athlete who comes from ltedbank Valley Higl1 School. And how can an athlete ever forget his coach who has taught him everything he knows? The coaches of ltedbank Valley High School have done a great job in 1952-53 and they can say they have done their part to bring about a success in sports. To these men we pay tribute-Klr. jesse Caldwell. head football and wrestling coach: Nlr. Henry Caruso. Xlr. john lteigel. Xlr. Andrew Daskivich. football assistants. and Xlr. Howard jones. basketball and baseball coach. Sports are a part of every boys life. He lives. breathes. and sleeps sports. Their memories live long within him. He will always look back into the past and relive his experiences. The past is indeed filled with color. The first New Bethlehem football team. in 1922. calls to mind such players as Chip Xlusser. Chester Doverspike. joe Keck. joe Xlurray. Dan Turner. jack Shick. Al Carlos. Homer Tosh. Charles Smith. and john Silvis. This team coached hy a Xlr. Beamer. played their games on the field now occupied by YVillison's Service Station. Dressed in lastic bottomed pants with bamboo slats for protection. dark jerseys with convict- like stripes and loosely ribbed helmets. these players often waged their gridiron battles on a flooded field. Basketball was of even greater importance in town in the early l900's. The team played in a building occupied today by the Skinner Transfer Company. Two pot-bellied stoves kept the specta- tors warm while chicken wire separated them from the basketball court. Rules were different then. too. After a successful try for a basket. there was no out-of-bounds move for the opposing team. only jumps for the hall. Xlr. Lester Himes. today an attorney. and Nlr. ltollie Lcrch. Porter Township teacher. were outstanding play- ers then. Such teams as lteynoldsville. Duliois. Clearfield. and Falls Creek were on the schedule and away games were attended by train. not buses or private cars as today. Our memories of this year and the past years are vivid and will always be that way because it was our victory. our team. our struggle. The dreams we have for the future are strong however. liven though we may never benefit by school improvements. we nevertheless hope that a gym can be built soon. and the athletic program enlarged so every student will have an opportunity if he desires it. to participate in that exciting phase of student life and a phase of life that has a separate page in our memory book- athletics. Xlr. jesse Caldwell, starting his first year as head coach. had a difficult time selecting a starting line-up for the first game with an un- known rival. Union Township. So. throughout the season quite a number of boys saw varsity action. The backfield positions were shared by Tom Kovalenko, Bob Lucas, Boger Allen. lack XVilson, NVQ-ndell Beddinger, and Benny Kunsel- man. As for the line, there was even more com- petition. Larry Dempster, Vern Campbell. Tim Bailey and Kermit Nlinich saw action as the ends. Tackle positions were filled by Bob Hill. Dave Lower and Neal Campbell. The Dover- spike brothers. Ed and jerry, took care of the guard positions and Vernon Hawk and Porter Smith held up the center. This was the squad that set out to get revenge for the 1952 record. This was the squad that fought two hard-losing battles in the first two games. losing to Union and Beynoldsville by only one touchdown. But the bovs never said Die, and this s Jirit n ' , . paid off in the third game of the season with Shannock Valley. This hair-raising event. spear- headed by Bob Lucas' great running, plus sup- port from everyone else, saw Bedbank outclass the Spartans 21-6. After two weeks of intermission, the Bulldogs didn't seem to have the same fight that brought victory in the previous game. Nevertheless, they fought Sykesville to the last second, losing only by one touchdown. ' zg we The lack of sufficient facilities in our school kept haskethall from gaining recognition as a major sport at Redhank Valley again this year. The hoys knew there was no gym availahleg however, quite a numher of prospects turned out for the first prac- tice. and we were represented hy a very hard- fighting quintet which gave many of the good teams in this area competition on their home floor. XVith a regulation practice court our team, which has three boys well over six feet. could have proven a dangerous competitor. lVith the building of a new school underway, we know haskethall will grow along with it. NVe now have underclassmen on the varsityg these, plus the many other good prospects the school possesses, will give our school another team of which it can he proud. Although the team has no wins. we believe the hoys displayed remarkable sportsmanship and had experiences they will treasure as they look hack on their life at Redhank. VVhat we did together will stay in our minds long after we have graduated. Social activities seem to haye a much greater role to play in the all-round development of a student today than in earlier times. ln 1922, when Nlr. D. .-X. Dietrich was principal of New Bethle- hem High School. there were literary societies that presented assemhly programs every Friday afternoon. These programs usually took the form ot dehates with judges to choose tl1e win- ning team. l'atron's Day was also an important affair. This was the day when parents visited the school and inspected their children's work and progress. There was not the fierce scrainhle hetween classes to see who could have the gyni for a Friday-night dance. Once the seniors challenged another class to a tug-of-war and ended up hy pulling the opposing team into Leisure Hun. Parties were held. though. and dances were popular. The seniors always held a party to introduce the freshmen to the high school students and at the end of the year the seniors had a hanquet and made plans for their annual trip to XVashington, D. C. In 1937. an impressive ceremony was held on the NVashington Street side of the school. .-Xt this time the Senior NVoinen's Chili of New Bethlehem planted a Constitution Tree as a living symliol ot our National Coyerninent. Nlr. Kata. our principal today. was then a history teacher. and he addressed tl1e asscinhled group on the suhject ot the Constitution. The year 19523 shows a decided increase in social affairs. XYhat student of Hedhank Valley will not reniemher the dances-the Sadie Hawkins' Dance, tl1e sock dance. the pronis. the all-school dance, a11d the square dances? NVhat student will not reineinher the cluhs-Tri-Hi-Y, Drainatics, Photography. Student Council. l .F.A.. journalism. and many others? Along with these are memories of hake sales. skating parties. candy sales. and other money-making projects. Yes, times haye changed. yet change means progress and no one wants his life or his school to remain stationary. The future will luring many more iinproyenlents to Hedhank Valley. hut these nieniories we hold in our hearts now will always he pre- cious ones. Probably you and everyone else has at one time or another. That is exactly what we clo at chorus. Our particular group of inusic lovers consists of seventy girls. Not all of us meet at the same tilne. Different groups meet throughout the week hut we all clo the same work with the same purposes in inincl. Pleasure is not the only purpose of the ehorusg it also gives us a chance to sing anal hecoine hetter singers. Xliss lioarts is constantly husy keeping us singing the songs the way they shoulcl he sung. XYith her help our singing has improved a great cleal. Our entire group sang at the Forensic Contest at Clarion and later at the Spring Concert. Since this was an election year we thought it only proper that we shoulcl have one. The re- sults showed jean Hctrick as presiclent. Like inisers who count their gold every night, we count our memories of the Hi-Y Club every chalice we get. VVhen the dusk has begun to settle or the sun has started to rise we realize how much we enjoyed this year with the Ili-Y Club. VVhen most of the leaves of autumn had changed to gold and school had begun, we, along with Nlr. jones, our sponsor, formed our Hi-Y Club. XVith our motto- To create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and com- munity high standards of Christian character -in mind we settled down to faithfully carry it out. Knowing the success of our club depended greatly on our officers, we elected: Kermit Blinich, presideutg Fred Doverspike, vice-presidentg and Larry Smith, secretary-treasurer. Although this is our first year we are enthusiastically looking forward to many more years as a Hi-Y Club here in Redbank Valley. As is true in practically all cases, the first year of a club is about the hardest and most import- ant year of the club's life. This held true with our Hi-Y Club and wc wish to thank our officers and our supervisor, who did a wonderful job under the circumstances. VVhen we recall our memories in the future we shall place among those of highest value, the ones which we shared this year at our Hi-Y Club. HI-Y fleft to rightl ROVV 11 E. Doverspike, D. XYe. of the Safety Patrol. are a selected group of boys and girls from the high school who help our schoolmates avoid street traffic accidents. Our organization is under the supervision of Xlr. 'Iosepln Kuhns. Benny Kunselnian is our captaing Tom Kovalenko. our lieutenant. NVQ- are also sponsored by the l.ion's Club of New Bethlehem. XVe remember our duties as a patrol member. On the street we saw to it that the rules of safety were applied. By constant repetition. good habits of safety were formed and became automatic to our school pals. Then our influence reached far beyond our own street corners. XVe also taught special safety rules to students riding on buses from rural districts. Though the main functions of our patrol are to remind our schoolmates of street safety rules and to protect them against street hazards. the school also derives other benefits. Our patrol provides an outlet for the energies of boys and girls. lt offers an incentive for better work and deportment. not only to those on the patrol, but also to those desiring to become members. XVe recall how proud we were as we stood at our designated post every school day before school opened and when it closed. XVe took a pledge to carry out our duties and to set a good example by observing safety rules ourselves. Day after day we protected our schoolmates against traffic hazards. Our service surely added to the glow of our golden memories. SAFETY PATROL tleft to right? ROW l: s. slum., .-x. ii.-mi.-r, 11. smith, ci. isish, 2: H. Kunselnmn, Cl. Shea. Xdzuns, C. lflxerliart. Shirley NIL-Cauley, Sally Sloan and Roger Stuart. Une ol our fondest memories is the husy time we had at Student Council. We were quite proud to he chosen representatives to this organization. YVe soon realized the seriousness of this cluli and settled down to get some real work done. Although our council was weak at the beginning. it soon rose to great standing. At the lie- ginning of the year a vigorous campaign was held for a Student Council president. This boosted school spirit considerable and also helped stimulate interest in the Student Council. YVe started off hy giving the All-School Prom. lt was a gala affair and the time flew. After this pleasant interruption we took a look at our agenda. Xlany things had to be done. To the best of our ability. we attended to everything we could. Among the things we did are: helped supervise Canteen activities, established a National Honor Society in our school and helped get it under way, erected a Red Cross Chapter. and many other activities too numerous to mention. Our officers, Shirley Xlc-Canley, presidentg Neal Cainphell, vice-presidentg Sally Sloan, secre- taryg and NVQ-ndell lleddinger. treasurer. made an appeal to the school hoard when they were discussing the site of the new school building. There would certainly he a gap in our chest of memories without the grave sincerity of our Student Council. STUDENT COUNCIL Cleft to rightl Rf,vV li H. Stuart. C. Griffin, B. Shreckengost. X. FRIE DS XVe will never forget our triends from New Bethlehem and surrounding communities who helped make this 1953 yearhook financially possible. XVithout their help all our efforts would have hcen in vain. Our memories of this town are only as short or as long as our own lives are. But there are many people living here who have deeper memories of this community-cithcr through personal experiences or through information pass- ed clown from generation to generation. The pages of our past are filled with fascinating infor- mation. It is interesting to note the many changes occur- ring in New Bethehem since 1809 when Christian Ilimcs, pioneer settler. first came here. Through the wide expanse of years. the first steam saw mill, erected in 1860. grew to he the present-day Andrews Lumber Companyg the first drug store of 1868 developed into lteinsel's Drug Storeg the erection of the Baptist Church of 1852 introduced many other faiths and religions into the towng a pay school con- ducted by a Nlr. Today the town has many stores and independent plants. such as the peanut huttcr factory. the candy factory. and the tile plant. Steps are under way now to conduct a labor survey in order to encourage more industry to enter New Bethlehem. YVe want our town to growl This marks the third hirthday for the Redhank Yalley lligli School and for the Vallis. Both are new in comparison to the early heginnings of the town and the school. NVe are deeply grateful to the merchants. parents. and friends who contributed to our annual. All have heen work- ing hard in order to progress. NVe want you to know we are appreciative of your help. and we hope you are pleased with the results.
