Mr. Smith came to Red Springs in 1964, the year that we began our high school careers. During these past four years we have gotten to know one another and we found out a lot about Mr. Smith. We found that he is a man who teaches because he enjoys it. He is a dedicated coach on the athletic field and he is a dedicated teacher in the class- room. He cares. He cares about the stu- dents he teaches and he cares about what he teaches them. Mr. Smith has earned our respect and we are indeed proud to dedicate this book to him. as asses-ses sa 51 Mr. Smith, always known for his great sportsmanship, exhibited this qual- ity by his performance in 'gThe Woman- less Wedding . His appearance as the blushing bride revealed a side of our coach which many of us had failed to notice before. Those two-hour summer practice sessions, pep rallies, tourna- ments, districts, the last trips on Old Redv, homecoming, and Red and White day all combined with many happy and sad experiences, made this a successful year for the cheering squad. 9' The hill of victory was tougher than ever this year. Through the loss of blood, tears, and sweat, the Red Devils crossed this hill several times. When they did not make itg the men who wore the red', stood their ground with determination. Is it merely a collection of snapshots or is it simply a report of what happened during this school year? By the time you read this you will probably have looked through this book and will have already formed your own opinion as to the value of this, your yearbook. I sincerely hope that you are pleased with this book and that you will treasure it over the years. This book is not just a collection of snapshots or a place to keep your friends, autographs, it is a serious attempt to interpret the day to day events of this year. It is an attempt to present a picture of our school life and to preserve the memorable moments from a memorable year. The 180 days of this school year have been interpreted through photography. This is primarily a book of photographs, copy is scarce. It is a collection of essential moments as seen through the photographeris eye. This view is not always clear, it is often distorted by emotion and other distinctly human failings. While not always unemotional, the photographer is honest, and his pictures are a serious attempt to tell it like it is. This is important at a time when the truth is often hard to come by. This is the way it happenedg every picture really happened-no fakes, nothing phoneyg just the truth. Over two thousand photographs were made for this book. Not always the best, but certainly the most meaningful appear within these pages. This year we did many things that have never been done before. I hope that you will like what we did, but in any event I hope you realize that we tried to be original and fair. We added new features, with which I am pleased, and we left out a lot of copy to make room for more pictures. We included more photos of seniors than ever before, because we felt that this is primarily a senior book. We took a lot of chances, we did a lot of things differently, not everything came off the way I had hoped, but in order to achieve something new and exciting and meaningful, sometimes you have to take a chance. In conclusion, I would like to thank Jimmy McKellar, for the Homecoming and graduation photos, and Jim Irby, for the track pictures. I thank the administration for allowing us to have twenty more pages this year. I appreciate the co-operation of the teachers who were very patient during the picture making. I wish to thank my parents who didn't complain about pictures being spread all over the house. Most of all I want to thank Mrs. Warwick and Pam Overstreet, without whose help I could never have gotten this book finished. And I thank you, too. bill lovin 112 .1-. J-, 4 ' +v 44. f4. 3 A 4-.Q 44.
