Through state and national competition, the club helps to build future business men and women. Two Red River seniors held state DECA offices this year: Randy Souser was state vice president and Wendy Wegner was named state secretary. At the state conference in Bismarck, Debbie Sattler, Randy Souser, Jim Melicher and Jim Douglas parti- cipated in the state leadership conference. At the state convention Lynn Lizakowski, Nancy Hover- sten and Randy Souser submitted manuals on marketing and distribution and were state winners. They and Laurie Rutsen will attend the national convention. At the state convention, Kriss iVIcCorin was a candidate for Nliss DECA. A. Terry Burk, DECA adviser. B. Chess Club Sends Four to Nationals Meeting to improve skills and to challenge others, the chess club provides a unique experience for all levels of chess players. A new organization at Red River, it has managed to acquire a quality that has helped to send four of its members--Eric Sorenson, Mark Sykes, Jeff Ohlinger, and Mike Russell--to national competition in Chicago in May. During the first year of competition, the team participated in several tournaments, including the North Dakota State Championship, novice division, at which Bob LeFave tied for second place. At the Grand Forks High School Invitational, Eric Soren- son won first place, Mark Sykes, second, and Mark Erickson, third. Eric Sorenson placed second at the North Dakota State High School Championship Tourney, and the team placed third. A. Eric Sorenson, first place winner of Grand Forks Invitational Chess Tournament. Thespians Promote Drama at RR The National Thespian Chapter here at Red River is composed of a selected group of students from the Drama Club. The Thespians Chapter is organized of students interested in dramatics. Elected officers this year were President, Scott Urnessg Vice Presi- dent, Dave Finn, and Secretary-Treasurer, Tim Cross.
